20 CSX freight rail is a part of the solution to our nation s transportation challenges Moving freight by rail is the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient way to move goods. CSX can move 1 ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel and a single intermodal train can carry the load of more than 280 trucks. If only 10 percent of freight currently moved by highway switched to rail, fuel consumption would be reduced by one billion gallons per year. This is enough to power more than 11,000 homes for a year. Transporting via freight rail: Reduces the carbon footprint of transportation Improves air quality Reduces oil demand Fosters economic growth with reduced environmental impact 20
21 National Gateway provides solutions to our nation s challenges, over $10 billion in public benefits* Stimulates the economy Over 30 years, expected to create more than 50,000 jobs, including more than 25,000 jobs in 14 economically distressed areas Improves U.S Competitiveness Triples the market access potential for the Ports of Baltimore, Hampton Roads and Wilmington while improving western connections over Chicago. Provides a Sustainable Transportation Solution Reduces emissions estimated 20 million tons of CO 2 eliminated. Assists states in attainment of federal clean air standards Reduces Consumption of Oil Contributes to U.S. energy security by saving 2 billion gallons of diesel fuel *2009 TIGER Application and tax/wage information
22 The National Gateway is good for Maryland Over $2 billion in benefits to Maryland* Job Creation: The National Gateway creates nearly 12,000 jobs Reduces congestion: The National Gateway removes more than 2 million trucks from Maryland highways Reduces greenhouse gas emissions: The National Gateway reduces CO 2 emissions in Maryland by over 2.2 million tons Reduces highway maintenance costs and improves safety: The National Gateway saves nearly $80 million in highway maintenance costs for Maryland Reduces overall freight shipping costs: The National Gateway saves nearly $400 million in logistics costs *2009 TIGER Application and tax/wage information
23 National Gateway - Maryland economic impacts The National Gateway will create nearly 12,000 jobs* in Maryland. The National Gateway will triple the market access potential** for the Port of Baltimore and the entire Baltimore region. Clearing the Virginia Avenue Tunnel will position the Port of Baltimore to reach additional new markets in the Southeast. 23 *2009 Tiger Application ** Cambridge Systematics 2007
