3 WHAT MATTERS TO YOU? Choosing the right university for your graduate work is a complex process. There are many factors to consider: the scholarly reputation and teaching abilities of the faculty, the quality of your student colleagues, the breadth of the research facilities, the match of your interests with those of the program you choose, and the style and setting of the campus itself. Keeping these important requirements in mind, UC Davis has much to offer you. With a large variety of programs in both the arts and the sciences, UC Davis is the most academically innovative campus in the UC system. Many of our programs are offered through graduate groups, an interdisciplinary concept providing students the opportunity to study and work in interrelated areas to broaden their intellectual experiences. Our faculty members are among the finest scholars in academia excellent teachers and mentors, with national and international reputations. This breadth of scholarship will provide you with the opportunity to undertake research that is relevant to our world. Laboratories and research facilities provide our students with the finest equipment and services. Our university library contains more than three million volumes and is ranked among the top research libraries in North America. Here you will find a very collaborative atmosphere, with close collegial ties between faculty and students. Our students are highly qualified and come from every point on the globe, attracted by the reputations of both faculty and fellow students. The mix of cultures and ideas makes Davis an exciting and supportive place to engage personally and academically. If you would like to be part of a very special graduate community, then UC Davis is the right choice. We look forward to welcoming you to our campus! Jeffery C. Gibeling Dean, Graduate Studies GRADUATE STUDIES 3

4 MARJANNIE? CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIETY. When I study science, I am inspired. My goal is to help decipher the etiology of diseases and discover what role the immune system plays in the disease. I chose UC Davis because I was impressed by the research being conducted on host-pathogen interactions and autoimmune diseases, as well as the ample interdisciplinary research that is conducted. I collaborate with professors and students from various disciplines and in turn develop a well-rounded education. Working in the lab, I have the opportunity to study the neurological and immunological aspects of autism, which is incredibly exciting. Earning my doctorate gives me the opportunity to contribute to society as a scientist. I plan to give back to the community and mentor students to reach goals and make changes one discovery at a time! MARJANNIE DIONNE ELOI Ph.D. STUDENT IMMUNOLOGY GRADUATE GROUP GRADUATE GROUPS More than half of UC Davis graduate programs are organized as interdisciplinary graduate groups, giving you the intellectual freedom to transcend disciplines and areas of research. Graduate groups embody the collaborative spirit at UC Davis by bringing together faculty from departments across campus who share common research interests, either in academic discipline or area of application. Because of this unique structure, it is common for a faculty member to belong to more than one graduate program. Therefore, graduate group students have the opportunity to work with students from different graduate programs. As part of a collaborative team, you will contribute your expertise while learning from students and faculty across disciplines. The extensive use of graduate groups has expanded the scope and strengthened the quality of graduate education at Davis. JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF A GRADUATE GROUP: The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology graduate group provides students with access to more than 133 faculty members with research and instruction interests in both basic and applied sciences. These faculty members hold appointments in more than 25 departments spanning the colleges of Letters and Science and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and the College of Biological Sciences. Now that s collaboration! GRADUATE STUDIES 5

5 JAMES? CONDUCTING RESEARCH. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and scientists from UC Berkeley, Stanford University and El Colegio de la Frontera Sur in Mexico. The ease of collaboration and support from the Davis faculty provide a great environment to conduct research and prepare students for a career in science. When I decided to enter graduate school, UC Davis was my top choice. Because of the university s prestigious entomology department and the reputation Davis has as a research institution my choice was simple. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in entomology because I am fascinated with the subject, enjoy research, and I would like to eventually have a career in academia. Being able to study entomology at UC Davis is a great honor and a dream come true for me. JAMES FLINT HARWOOD Ph.D. STUDENT ENTOMOLOGY RESEARCH Distinguished scholars; a treasured sense of community; a dedication to creative, responsive and innovative teaching; research and public service these values form the foundation of UC Davis. By working closely with faculty members with varying interests and expertise, you will develop research and teaching strategies benefiting California, the nation and the world. UC Davis researchers address some of today s most pressing challenges: West Nile virus, water and food safety, autism, and cleaner fuel technologies. Many outstanding facilities and programs support research in all areas on the Davis campus. 6 HOPE? INSPIRING OTHERS. After being in the performance field for 10 years, I decided it was time to hone my artistic chops. It was important that I look for a two-year program that prided itself on a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. UC Davis was one of the few that offered this important component, easily making it the best match for me. Receiving my M.F.A. means that I have a highly regarded terminal degree in my field and I will be able to teach at the university level. Plus with the expansive education I received, I have added wonderful new skills and techniques to my performance toolbox. HOPE MIRLIS M.F.A. STUDENT DRAMATIC ART ACTING CONCENTRATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The university recognizes the importance of providing you with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills beyond your formal academic training. Workshops in writing, passing qualifying exams and career options outside academia as well as providing internships in such areas as industry, national labs, nongovernment organizations, and the arts are some of the many ways UC Davis helps graduate students develop professionally. These opportunities will help you succeed at UC Davis and in your future career. 7 FELIPE? SERVING ETHNIC COMMUNITIES. While doing research as an undergraduate at UC Riverside, I learned about the UC LEADS program and I applied. UC LEADS allowed me to spend a summer at UC Davis conducting research. After that summer, I knew UC Davis was the place for me. I am now pursuing a Ph.D. to better represent and serve my ethnic community. The education gained will aid my efforts to relay the benefits of biomedical research to underprivileged communities. I have taken on this educational goal because it is challenging and adventurous. To me, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I have everything to gain and nothing to lose. FELIPE GODINEZ Ph.D. STUDENT BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATE GROUP IMAGING TRACK DIVERSITY As a world class university, we thrive on the synergy that emerges only when people from diverse perspectives join in the pursuit of knowledge. Some of the most brilliant ideas in our history have come from those whose unique qualities compelled them to ask questions that no one else thought to ask. Our research, teaching and contributions to society rely on our ability to engage people from all walks of life as we embrace our similarities and celebrate our differences. At UC Davis, we accomplish this in many ways, such as through our annual cultural celebrations and an array of campus resources that foster a spirit of community year-round. JUST A FEW WAYS DIVERSITY MATTERS AT UC DAVIS: Black Graduate and Professional Student Association Campus Community Book Project Campus Council on Community and Diversity Cross Cultural Center Cultural Days Diversity Education Program Diversity Film Series Latino/a Graduate Student Association Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center Principles of Community Student Disability Center Women s Resources and Research Center GRADUATE STUDIES 11

8 LATONYA? RESEARCHING CHILDREN S DEVELOPMENT. I am interested in how children develop cognitively and I want to learn how to promote positive development in children. UC Davis was among my choices because it has a very strong psychology program and is a top-tiered university where critical research is being conducted in the fields of memory and autism. I was also impressed that my program is one of the interdisciplinary graduate programs that bridges faculty, students and departments across campus providing students a more enriching graduate experience. Earning a graduate degree from UC Davis will provide me with the extraordinary opportunity to potentially transform knowledge, teach others and contribute to scientific thinking. LATONYA HARRIS Ph.D. STUDENT PSYCHOLOGY DEVELOPMENTAL TRACK STUDENT LIFE How you will spend your time away from your studies is an important factor in your success as a graduate student. At UC Davis, you will be part of a vibrant graduate student community that has something for everyone. If you like to stay active, you ll be able to join an intramural sports team, go kayaking with Outdoor Adventures or exercise at the expansive Activities and Recreation Center. Maybe you re interested in the arts? Visit one of the many campus galleries, enjoy a performance at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts or attend a performance presented by our departments of theatre and dance or music. Hosting a radio show on KDVS-FM, getting involved with the Graduate Student Association or learning photography at the Craft Center are just a few of the ways UC Davis offers you a balanced and fulfilling life as a graduate student. JUST A FEW THINGS FOR YOU TO DO IN AND AROUND DAVIS: Peruse the urban offerings of nearby Sacramento, our state capital Snowboard, water ski, hike or camp in the Sierras or Lake Tahoe Taste wines in the Napa Valley or Sonoma wine country Take a salsa dance or cooking class at the campus s Experimental College Enjoy the food and live music at the Davis Farmers Market Stroll through a multitude of art museums Visit the vibrant life of San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area Go to pro sports games in Sacramento or San Francisco Ride a bike... anywhere and everywhere! 9 DAVID? POWERING THE FUTURE. I ve been very fortunate and have received fellowships that have enabled me to pursue research opportunities and discover new ways to power our future. I have received fellowship support from the ARCS Foundation and have been awarded the Eisenhower and Chevron Fellowships. I have also participated in a program with the Argonne National Lab in Washington, D.C., and I spent a summer in Vienna, participating in a fellowship at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. These experiences have enhanced my network with other scientists worldwide, and they enrich the knowledge I share with UC Davis colleagues. DAVID McCOLLUM Ph.D. STUDENT TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY AND POLICY GRADUATE GROUP UC Davis proudly engages in best sustainability practices. We are mindful that being sustainable supports ecological, human, and social and economic vitality for both our campus and the global community. We are cautious to allocate resources in a sustainable fashion, to make smart decisions and take actions today that will be in the best long-term interest for all. That means meeting the campus s present needs while enhancing its environment, all the time keeping a watchful eye on how today s decisions and actions will affect tomorrow s generations. Some of our best practices include research in the areas of: alternative fuels, renewable energy sources, waste diversion, water conservation, green building strategies and hybrid technologies. We have even transformed the campus s messy olive trees from a waste product to a marketable and sought after product gourmet olive oil. Wes Morgan, development engineer in the Design Program at the California Lighting Technology Center, stands under a hybrid porch fixture that results in a 70 percent energy savings.
