2 Hearings Office Case Report Purpose This report provides information on recommendations to the Superintendent s Hearings Office for hearings during the school year. The report provides data to support the management of the Fairfax County Public Schools. 3 Introduction This is a report on recommendations for disciplinary action and requests for re-entry submitted to the Superintendent s Hearings Office for the school year. This report includes data on: Expulsion Removal from Fairfax County Public Schools, Exclusion Imposition of expulsion or long-term suspension from another school district, Reassignment Request for placement in alternative school program as a result of charges for a crime in the community, and Reentry - Request for return to FCPS. The report is based upon receipt date of recommendations (the case year) during the school year (July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006). In those instances (in this report) where a singular year is listed, the FCPS fiscal year is indicated (i.e represents the school year). The report provides data to support the management of the Fairfax County Public Schools. 4 Summary 1136 cases were submitted to the Hearings Office during the school year for expulsion, exclusion, reassignment, and reentry: o 949 cases for expulsion o 50 cases for reassignment (for crime in the community) o 40 cases for exclusion (expelled or long-term suspended from another school district) o 97 cases for reentry 289 cases were considered by the School Board: o 213 cases were considered by three-member School Board hearing committees. o 76 cases were considered by the full School Board. 181 recidivist cases were submitted to the Hearings Office during the school year for 154 students. 18 Reassignments Crime in the Community Principals may request reassignment of a student to an alternative school program when a student is charged with a crime in the community. Reassignment cases considered by the Hearings Office during the case year are illustrated below. 19 Exclusion Rule Violations Students who have been expelled or long-term suspended from another school district may be excluded from FCPS. 20 Recidivism Violation of Probationary Conditions Students for whom disciplinary hearings have been held are probationary students who are expected to maintain good behavior, attendance, and grades.
