Change. Means.. The Change. In an evolving world, a Spelman education galvanizes global leaders and pioneering thinkers to serve their professions and inspire their communities more creatively and beneficially than ever before. Building on Spelman s tradition of educating forward-thinking, socially conscious women, our graduates go forth and change the world in meaningful ways. The Means. Our vision and planning are in place. Now, to enhance the educational opportunity for every Spelman student scholar, we seek to secure the necessary means through a comprehensive fund-raising effort. The $150 million goal of The Campaign for Spelman College represents the most significant fundraising effort in our history. We know our goal is daring. This same quality has inspired our students since 1881, sustained our mission as the premier historically Black liberal arts college for women, and propelled our graduates to the forefront of the arts, child advocacy, finance, law, medicine, public service, science, and many other fields. The Action. Standing on the shoulders of generations of women who have come before them, Spelman students are poised to achieve not just to their own satisfaction, but for the greater good. Your generous support will ensure our legacy of empowering From the beginning, Spelman College women to recognize their purpose, realize their potential, and graduates have been driven by a multiply your investment with their personal and professional purpose larger than themselves. They contributions. We invite you to support our heritage and their include the founder and president of the calling by making an active choice to change the world today. Children s Defense Fund, internationally renowned visual and performing artists, the first African-American general in the U.S. Air Force, the dean of Harvard College, four generations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s female relatives, highly placed alumnae in all aspects of business and law, including senior executives at The Coca-Cola Company and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and in just two years, three recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for President Beverly Daniel Tatum talks with students. 4 Campaign Priorities Students form the heart of The Campaign for Spelman College. Your generous gifts will secure access to a global education for every deserving young woman; support her work alongside pioneering scholars and experts who foster leadership and service as well as insight; broaden her connections with Spelman alumnae who have led the way; and ensure that service opportunities engage her mind and heart to improve communities across metropolitan Atlanta. Attract and retain exceptional students The nation s most gifted young women apply to Spelman College. These students represent a variety of academic and socio-economic experiences; increasingly, they come from situations that require them to take on substantial personal debt to finance their education. Scholarships for individual students will provide immediate debt relief and enable Spelman to increase its already impressive graduation rate. Internationalize every undergraduate s education Today, as learning and working routinely cross disciplines and borders of every kind, all professions face significant challenges. Only by integrating global learning across all four years will we prepare our students to lead with the broad, sophisticated understanding of multiple cultures that this era demands. student researchers, link them with internships, and help them integrate learning with leadership and career planning for specific outcomes. These gifts will also provide much-needed funds for student researchers and interns. Strengthen our alumnae network The College s steady, consistent growth depends on alumnae every woman, every year, contributing gifts of time and talent through her connections with fellow alumnae, students, and faculty, and also making a thoughtful financial gift proportionate to her means. Recently the number of our alumnae donors grew to more than 4,000, bringing participation to 31%. Building on this momentum, Spelman seeks to increase annual alumnae donor participation over time to 50% a standard reached by only a handful of liberal arts colleges, and one that will also help leverage major gifts to the College. Foster leadership, student by student Leadership development, a tradition at Spelman, takes on fresh urgency in a context of rapid change and increasing globalization. The integration of leadership into curricular and co-curricular activities will prepare our students to make wise, authentic, and ethical choices as they choose to change the world. Expand undergraduate research and career-related internships Our faculty play a key role in developing our students innate talents, social conscience, and global awareness. Funding to identify Spelman Millennial Faculty Fellows will support the creative, original thinkers who mentor Increase service learning Through this initiative, the College will position serviceand community-based learning as a fundamental building block of the Spelman MILE, or My Integrated Learning Experience the College s individualized liberal education curriculum. A second strategic initiative is to further forge national and global connections to local community issues in the Spelman curriculum and cocurricular programs. Change. Means. Momentum. SPELMAN COLLEGE A CHOICE TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Changing the World taking action. Barbara Furlow, C 2007 Department Assistant, MTV Network s Office of Global Inclusion I had a lot of mothers at Spelman who wanted me not just to follow in their footsteps but to go beyond. They encouraged me to study in Africa, saying, You re the person who can make a change. Spelman teaches you to listen first, explore and research, then do something about it. I used that model to develop Afro-lution Magazine, and it guides my work at MTV. Now I try to give to Spelman every month, because I owe it to all the women who helped me to do the work I m doing now.

Changing the World Laurie A. Cumbo, C 97 Founder and Executive Director, MoCADA (the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts) When I was growing up in Brooklyn, as far as I could see there was very little inspiration on a grand scale architecturally. The Brooklyn Museum had been built 100 years ago by people who were white, and I didn t think I could do that. Then I came to Spelman and said, wow, look at this: here is a Black woman president building dorms, a new science lab, a computer center, and a museum. I came back to Brooklyn and built MoCADA to show young people what someone who looks just like them can accomplish. expanding art and culture in Brooklyn.

Change. Means. Innovation. Special Initiatives Spelman College Museum of Fine Art The only museum in the United States that emphasizes works by and about women of the African Diaspora, our Museum of Fine Art is a unique resource for the region and the nation. Spelman invites donors who care deeply about the arts to choose named giving opportunities that align with their special interests, including support for our visionary director and a new curator of exhibitions. Flexible funding can have an immediate impact by underwriting groundbreaking exhibitions; giving more depth and breadth to our collections; publishing keepsake exhibition catalogs; organizing programs and enhancing our outreach to under-served communities; and widening our reach in environmentally sustainable ways. A terrific show.... As curated by museum director Andrea Barnwell and Atlantan Karen Comer Lowe, ideas bounce and ricochet off one another with the energy of a handball game. 8 Change. Means. Success. Special Initiatives Women s Research & Resource Center In granting Spelman a $1 million challenge grant for our Women s Research & Resource Center, the Ford Foundation made a significant investment in the future of this groundbreaking academic center. By raising $1 million in matching funds, Spelman will advance the Center s pioneering work in teaching and research by and about Black women, develop and support student activists, and continue to lead ground-breaking women s advocacy projects. It will also strengthen the Center s archival collection related to Black feminist politics and exciting breakthroughs in new media by such pioneers as Professor Ayoka Chenzira, recognized as the first African-American woman animator and creator of the Digital Moving Image Salon on campus. Since 1981, the Center s growth has upheld Spelman s distinctive legacy of diverse leadership committed to social justice and progressive change. In addition to its advocacy and outreach, research archives, and digital media programs, comparative women s studies core courses and campus-wide global women s health initiatives are key Center assets. Residence Hall Renovations The Suites, Spelman s newest residence hall, was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, and exemplifies Spelman s commitment to sustainability. This green building has set a new standard for our campus master plan, which has set a new benchmark for our campus master plan, which places a priority on modernizing our residence halls. Home to 70% of our student body, these halls will also become home to residential living-learning programs under Spelman s Plan for (left) Author Pearl Cleage has mentored young students through Spelman s Women s Research & Resource Center. (right) Students enrolled in filmmaker Ayoka Chenzira s course at Spelman s Digital Moving Image Salon have produced award-winning documentaries.

Changing the World providing health care for people in need. Dr. Kyra Stinson Harvey, C 89 Physician, Piedmont Physicians Group Spelman was life-changing. It nurtured me academically, culturally, and as a citizen with the idea that there was nothing I couldn t accomplish. The science faculty and health careers office shared a sense of excitement that I was going to be a physician, and they made sure pre-med students stayed on course. The College s core values academic excellence, leadership, being well-rounded, the obligation to give back shaped who I am. Our practice in Southwest Atlanta serves a diverse community very much in need of medical care, and that kind of commitment to the community starts early at Spelman.

Changing the World Kimberly Browne Davis, C 81 Vice President, Global Philanthropy, JP Morgan Chase, and President, JP Morgan Chase Foundation My great-great-aunt was in Spelman s first graduating class, and that history and legacy was always top of mind. I was admitted to Stanford and Yale, but Spelman remained my first choice, and my education has enabled me to move from strength to strength in different organizations. It s also helped me not just to survive eight mergers, but thrive! Spelman women are comfortable bringing conflict to the table, leading debate, and managing change. Our students graduate with a strong sense of who they are and how they can change the world. transforming organizations and communities.

Changing the World experiencing sisterhood. ZaKiya Williams, C 2011 I m from Chicago, and the first person in my family to go to Spelman. When I visited I really felt the essence of the Spelman sisterhood, and in my sophomore year I felt it a different way. A scholarship covered my first year, but during my sophomore year I owed Spelman $6,000 and loans were not coming through. When I received another full scholarship, it energized me. Now I feel empowered to put my mind to my goals, like so many sisters before me, and succeed.

Changing the World finding your voice. Kirsti and Kristy Bronner, C 2014 We ve written over 19 songs together about destiny, peace, and self-esteem of young girls. Now we re excited to start classical training in Spelman s Music Department so we can appreciate various kinds of music. We found out about Spelman when we were really young, because so many women in our family attended, but we also came because they raise up leaders here. By helping you apply the drive and the passion you have in your heart, Spelman truly prepares you to be successful.

Change. Means. Commitment. Ways of Giving Spelman understands that how you give can be just as important for you as how much you give, and your preferences may change over your lifetime: Outright gifts yield immediate tax benefits to you and have an immediate impact on Spelman. Various annuities pay you income now and preserve the principal for Spelman s use later. Bequest intentions provide a living testament to your desire to invest in generations of young women who sustain our tradition of achievement. Donors of a certain age who document their commitment by naming Spelman as beneficiary in their estate plans will receive recognition in this Campaign. Cash gifts and pledges The easiest and most popular form of giving, these contributions can be made online or by electronic funds transfer (EFT), recurring credit card deductions (RCC), phone, or mail. For as little as $10 a month, the RCC option allows you to set up regular, automatic payments charged to the card you select, and your EFT gifts to Spelman will be automatically deducted from your checking or savings account. Gifts of appreciated securities Sometimes more valuable than outright cash gifts, these contributions give you an immediate tax deduction and do not incur capital gains. The sale of these transferred securities enables Spelman to support needed initiatives. Gifts of real property When you deed your home/vacation home, undeveloped property, or commercial building to Spelman, these gifts also give you an immediate tax deduction and do not incur capital gains. Spelman may either use your property for the College or sell it and apply the proceeds to achieve its strategic goals. (left) Professor Andrew B. Williams Spelbots team programs robots using artificial intelligence. SPELMAN COLLEGE A CHOICE TO CHANGE THE WORLD

Spelman women have been changing the world since 1881, Not only do I want when our College began in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church. Those first 11 students, most of whom were former slaves, envisioned the ability to read, write, and ensure a better life for their families and communities. Today, our nationally and internationally renowned alumnae include change agents in the arts, armed forces, business, civil rights, corporate philanthropy, education, law, public service, the sciences, and many other arenas. In every case, Spelman women extend the value of a Spelman education to thousands of communities worldwide. One by one, our talented and deserving students will feel the impact of each Campaign contribution. One by one, they will live up to the faith you have in them and live out our commitment to young women to be able to say, This place was built for me, but to be able to say, This place was built for me and it s nothing less than the best. Beverly Daniel Tatum, Ph.D., president of Spelman College succeed, not for themselves alone, but for our communities and the world. By giving us the means that are so critical to our advancement, your action will help achieve all the positive change we envision. Together, let us make the choice to change the world. Change. Means. Action. SPELMAN COLLEGE A CHOICE TO CHANGE THE WORLD.

Changing the World cultivating student leaders. Dr. Tarshia L. Stanley Associate Professor of English Every year my students organize a conference, Mothering our Daughters: Mediating the Messages, where we talk to girls and their mentors. These students talk to the girls about images of young Black women in the media, and with their moms and other mentors, we share strategies for discussing these images at home. For me, teaching Spelman students is rewarding because I get to stand at the crossroads and watch all the leaders come by. At this formative age, they already make decisions to provide inspiration and leadership for others.

Changing the World mentoring young scientists. Dr. Aditi Pai Assistant Professor of Biology From the beginning, I ve been very impressed by the caliber of my students and their motivation to do research. Spelman has also given me opportunities to grow as an educator. When I attend pedagogy conferences and see that people are trying to develop the kind of science curriculum we already have in place, I feel very proud. Information in fields like science changes constantly. We must prioritize what our students need to know, and help them develop skills so they can adapt to any environment.
