3 Dear Students, first of all, welcome. The Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna, which you will soon learn more about, is a University that is as old as it is new. Founded in 1088, it is considered to be the oldest university in the Western world. Today, in Bologna and on the four Romagna campuses (Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini), the Alma Mater Studiorum continues to pave the way for innovation through an increasingly rich variety of study programmes, increasingly cutting-edge research and an increasingly broad international outlook. Our course catalogue offers a wide range of diversified programmes, from first-cycle (3-year) to second-cycle and single cycle degrees, post-graduate and specialisation programmes, aiming to ensure the personal and future professional growth of its students. For academic year 2014/2015, the programme catalogue includes a wide variety of subjects: 207 degree programmes, of which 92 first cycle (three years), 103 second cycle (two years) and 12 single cycle (five or six years); 52 international degree programmes, some of which are run with other foreign universities; 27 degree programmes held in the English language. You can count on a wide range of services to support and facilitate your study path: from initial to ongoing guidance and advice, from the right to education - guaranteed through financial support to deserving and low-income students - to recreational and sports activities, foreign language learning and facilitations for international exchanges and studies abroad, from the tutoring and study support network to assistance in entering the job market. Every year over 15,500 students graduate at Bologna. Based on the data produced by Alma Laurea, the statistics tell us that almost 50% of all our graduates (first, second and single cycle) are in paid employment within one year after graduation, and after three years this figure reaches 70%. The statistics also tell us that 84% of our graduates would choose to attend the University of Bologna again. We are well aware that the current period is not easy for you, indeed it is one of the most critical of the past few years, marked by worries over the uncertain or even worse future. Remember however that a degree is a great advantage in terms of both employment and salary, as well as a symbol of the inalienable right to knowledge that must be available to all. The choice you are about to make concerns not only you and your families but the whole country, which has a vital and urgent need for a new managerial class to drive our cultural and technical fields. The country needs you: your mind, your heart and your hands, because the future lies with you. Do not try to be better than others; try to be better than yourselves. Ivano Dionigi Rector of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna

OFA - Additional Learning Requirements Access to all first cycle and single cycle degree programmes is subject to an entrance exam to assess students on their basic knowledge. Students who do not manage to complete the OFA within the set terms are required to repeat the first year of the programme. STUDY PLAN The study plan is the set of all the course units and exams students have to sit in order to graduate. Students must complete their study plan for the year they are enrolled to, selecting elective learning activities and, where necessary, modifying any choices made in previous academic years. 5

6 SCHOOLS The Schools are the organisational structures which coordinate the teaching activities, combining uniform and complementary subject areas and guaranteeing the quality of teaching and student services. The 11 Schools of the University of Bologna are: Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Economics, Management, and Statistics Pharmacy, Biotechnologies, and Sport Sciences Law Engineering and Architecture Arts, Humanities, and Cultural Heritage Foreign Languages and Literature, Interpreting and Translation Medicine Psychology and Education Science Political Sciences DEPARTMENTS The 33 Departments are the university structures in charge of the organisation of scientific research, teaching and learning functions; they are responsible for proposing the study programmes to the Schools. ACCESS TO STUDY PROGRAMMES First cycle and single cycle degree programmes may have restricted (local or national) access or open access. In both cases, admission is subject to the assessment of basic knowledge and the assignment, where required, of Additional Learning Requirements ( OFA ) to be completed during the first year of the programme. The methods for checking basic knowledge may vary from programme to programme. For programmes with restricted access, basic knowledge is assessed during the entrance exam. Second cycle degree programmes may have restricted or open access. In both cases, to access the programmes, candidates must meet the specific curricular requirements and have appropriate personal knowledge, which is assessed in the methods laid down for each programme. Candidates who do not pass the entrance exam will not be permitted to enrol in the programme. 6

7 Programmes with restricted access issue a call for applications (bando), setting out the access requirements, deadlines for application, entrance exam methods and the number of places available. Information concerning enrollment is published on the University Portal, in the Teaching pages, accessible from: Programmes with restricted access set nationally by the Ministry A single entrance exam is set by MIUR (Ministero dell Istruzione, dell Università e della Ricerca/Ministry for Education, Universities and Research) along with the number of places established for each university: Single cycle degree programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Architecture, Construction Engineering and Architecture, Primary Education Sciences; Second cycle degree programmes for the health professions. Programmes with restricted access set locally by the University These have an entrance exam set according to the needs of the University, governed by specific calls published on the University Portal: TOLC Some degree programmes with restricted access adopt a selection procedure based on the score obtained in the CISIA On-Line Test (TOLC). You will find information on the TOLC and the list of programmes which have adopted this method on: Entrance exams (for first and single cycle programmes with open access) These are compulsory but not selective exams; students who do not pass the exam may in any case register for the degree programme but will be set Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) to be completed in the first year. In some cases the entrance exam is held after registration to the programme. Before registering, read all the information concerning the admission methods for the programme you are interested in.
