Calling All Lonely Instruments Do you have a flute, trumpet, violin, or other instrument that has been abandoned by someone with a change of heart? We are always seeking donations of gently used band and orchestra instruments for our students who may not have the funds, but are eager to learn to play. Your instrument could play on through another student. Feel free to contact Natalie Kruger, Stefanie Bothun, or the Northfield Fine Arts Boosters if you are able to make a musical or monetary donation. PTO Thank you! Thank you to the Bridgewater PTO for all their hard work and service to the school and students! President Shari Sneary has been amazing!! I have learned that she is an incredible organizer, worker, singer, performer, and an all-around great person! All of her work is greatly appreciated! Thank you for the work on the Boosterthon; we are looking forward to the Fun Run on May 15! Thank you to all of the great volunteers! Change of Address Please inform us of your new address, phone number(s), and addresses as they change over the summer or during the school year. This is important when we send home information such as teacher assignments in August or when your child is ill and needs to go home.

4 Physical Education News. Paul Bernhard & Tony Mathison Physical Education and Lifetime Wellness Instructors Spring fitness testing is in full swing with indoor testing nearly completed. We will complete the running events in the next week or so. Students are showing positive strides from the fall results which is always encouraging. Discussions have centered on aerobic and anaerobic activity, to dynamic and static stretching and the benefits of those. Grades K-2 will run the half mile and grades 3-5 the mile when the time comes. The Jump Rope for Heart event students voluntarily participated in raised over $13,000 for the American Heart Association. Way to go!!! A GIANT thank you to all contributors. This is the 17th year Bridgewater students have jumped, raising over $119,000! 4th-5th Field Day will take place on Friday, May 29th. An information letter will be sent home prior to the event. Classroom teachers will be looking for a minimum of two volunteers per class to assist with the events. Volunteers are needed to supervise stations, time events, etc. Please watch for the information letter as there will be a spot to sign up to assist. Thanks in advance! We are looking for a positive conclusion to the school year! As always..."fit Kids Are Healthy Kids!" Band News. Stefanie Bothun Hello from the band room! The year is winding down and all 5 th grade band students have done an excellent job this year learning their instruments. I hope to see many students continue band in middle school and keep playing over the summer. The Tuesday morning rehearsals for the month of May will be as follows: May 19, & 26. We will also rehearse the last Tuesday of school on June 2 by doing a little bit of playing and also celebrating the accomplishments the students have achieved this year. Our final concert of the year is Tuesday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the middle school auditorium. This concert will also feature the 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade bands from the middle school. This will be a great opportunity for students to experience what it will be like to play at the middle school level. While it is not required to stay for the entire concert, it is highly encouraged so students can hear the progress from 6 th to 7 th to 8 th grade. All 5 th grade band students will need to meet in the middle school band room at 6:40 p.m. All students should dress nicely and bring their instruments and music. No wire music stands are required for this concert and all big instruments (French Horn, Baritone and Tuba) will need to bring their instruments from home. Summer Band Lessons: all 5 th grade students were given a summer band form to bring home and share with their families. Summer band lessons are not required, but highly recommended. All 5 th grade students are now considered advanced students, so please refer to the information for advanced students when filling out the form. All forms are due by Friday, May 15 and each student will be given their scheduled time the last week of school. 4 th Grade Students: The time to join band is NOW! All 4 th graders received a band handbook at the beginning of April which included all the information you need to know about 5 th grade band and the chance to sign up. Once all the sign-ups are collected, each student will come to the band room and try their top three instrument choices to see which one fits them best. After all students try the instruments, a form will be sent home with information about the instrument that fit them best and an invitation to attend our Instrument Display Night on Monday, May 18 between 6 8:00 p.m. at Bridgewater Elementary School. This night will include time to sign up for a trial/purchase instruments with Schmitt music, sign up for summer band lessons, meet the band teachers, and bring your already owned instrument for the band directors to check the playing condition. 4

6 Music Update. Kristen Hummel Congratulations and best wishes to Miss Natalia Romero (St. Olaf student) who has been teaching music to all of our students for the past 6 weeks! She completed her student teaching at Bridgewater on Friday, May 8. She will graduate this Spring and is pursuing her first teaching job to begin this summer or fall! Recent topics covered in music include: 5th-jazz music (blues & scat) 4th-recorder karate 3rd-sixteenth notes 2nd-instruments of the orchestra 1st "la-so-mi" melodies Kindergarten-steady beat, faster/slower Thank-you to all parents, families, friends who attended our May 5 concert featuring 4th and 5th grade choir singers! Students can be proud of their performance of "100 Years of Broadway," arranged by Mac Huff. While we enjoyed performing wearing black top hats, stage jewelry, and special stage lighting, the best part of our concert was singing our songs while surrounded by an awesome audience. Choir singers have been asked to participate in a district choral festival (grades 4-8) which will happen during the school day on May 22. Permission forms were sent home on Wednesday of last week! Volunteer at Bridgewater! Would you love to help children grow their reading or math skills, succeed in school and get extra support? If your answer is yes, you can be trained to serve as a tutor with Minnesota Reading or Math Corps at Bridgewater Elementary. Whether you want to explore an educational career, reenter the workforce, or give back to your community, you can succeed as a tutor. As a tutor, you ll see a student s progress in their test scores, in their other school work and in their eyes as they light up with the satisfaction of knowing they can do it. No child wants to stand out because they can t learn as quickly as other kids. We re helping more kids catch up and soar on their own. And you can be part of it! In addition to our extensive paid training, tutors receive on-site support from specially trained school mentors. Tutors are paid a living allowance, and are eligible for an education award of up to $5,645 and federal student loan forbearance. Tutors 55 or older may gift the award to a child or grandchild. You can help by telling a friend or family member about our school s open positions. We have 2 Reading Corps and 1 Math Corps position available at Bridgewater for the school year. Applicants can learn more and apply at or Strong preference is given to tutors who can begin in August. Send questions to or call Experience life-changing growth. 10 May 2015 Newsletter Main Office Chris Richardson, Superintendent of Schools Donita Delzer, Admin. Assistant to the Superintendent & School Board Buildings & Grounds Business Office Community Services Division & Community Relations Curriculum Office Child Nutrition Services Health Services Human Resources Payroll Office Student Services Technology Services Technology Recommendations Approved At its April 27 meeting, the Northfield Board of Education approved recommendations from the District Technology Steering Committee for the next phase of the Transformational Technology Project, including expansion of the district s ipad initiative to provide personalized learning tools to students. Director of Technology Kim Briske presented the recommendations to the board, which were the result of a process that included a board update in January, 12 listening sessions, and surveys in each school and for community members. The process also included four Chromebook demonstrations for staff interested in seeing an alternative to the ipad. In her presentation, Briske outlined the rationale for proposed new ipad leases and programmatic changes including a new device management system that makes it possible to restrict access to the App Store and includes a classroom management tool to allow teachers to lock student ipads into a specific app or website. The Casper mobile device management system will be in place for the start of the school year, replacing the system that has been in place over the past two school years. The recommendations also include a three-phase lease cycle of ipads and cases for staff and students. Beginning with the school year, ipads will be provided for 4th and 5th grade students and will be kept at school. A second lease beginning in January of 2016 will provide replacement ipads for staff and 6th through 12th grade students. A third lease in July 2016, coupled with the first lease of ipads in 2015, will also provide one ipad for every two students in grades K-3. In addition, keyboards will be made available for classroom checkout beginning next year. The district s proxy server, which filters the internet on school devices when they are off campus, will be discontinued due to interference with internet connectivity and access to software tools in Schoology and Google Drive. Web filtering will still be in place on all devices when connected to school WiFi, and the district will provide family resources for internet filtering at home. For more information on the implementation and use of ipads, please visit the project blog, at Early Learning Scholarships The Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division has received approval by the Minnesota Department of Education of its application for early learning scholarships. Pending passage of the state s fiscal year 2016 education budget, the scholarships will allow for support of the following actions. Adding a five-day per week preschool class, with capacity for 12 scholarship students Providing transportation for preschool and parent education events Providing one parent education and/or family event each month, from September to June Purchasing evidence-based curriculum for the EarlyVentures childcare program and continuing to provide wrap-around care slots for district preschool students as requested Increasing the number of students served in Bridges to Kindergarten by 25 students Increasing collaboration between early childhood teachers and kindergarten staff To learn more about our scholarships for preschool, please call or Concert Choir Featured by MPR Classical MPR (Minnesota Public Radio) recently aired songs from a performance of the Northfield High School Concert Choir at a 2015 state convention.
