The remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight: Edmonton DAY 2: Wed 09 Jul EDMONTON YELLOWKNIFE (D) Depart Edmonton to fly to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Situated on the shores of Great Slave Lake, the 10th largest freshwater lake in the world, Yellowknife got its start with gold and is now known as the Diamond Capital of Canada. It boasts a population of just over 18,000 and is the capital of the Northwest Territories. Enjoy a tour to 'old town' later this afternoon. Overnight: Yellowknife DAY 3: Thu 10 Jul YELLOWKNIFE (B) The current population of Yellowknife is ethnically mixed. Of the 11 official languages of the Northwest Territories, five are spoken in significant numbers in Yellowknife. Today, enjoy a tour of the Interpretive Centre and Legislative Building as well as visit the Mining Museum of the Northwest Diamond Company. Here, you will see a display of diamonds and get a bit of the history of the diamond industry in the north. Later this afternoon, embark on a cruise on the Great Slave Lake. Overnight: As above DAY 4: Fri 11 Jul YELLOWKNIFE INUVIK (BD) The morning is free to explore on your own before flying to Inuvik, situated on the banks of the Mackenzie River. Inuvik was conceived in 1953 as a replacement administrative centre for the hamlet of Aklavik. Initially called "New Aklavik", it was renamed to Inuvik, meaning "Place of Man", in Upon arrival you will be taken on a city tour as well as a walking tour to the Igloo Church and Interpretive Centre. 2 DAY 5: Sat 12 Jul INUVIK TUKTOYAKTUK INUVIK (B) This morning, fly over the Mackenzie River Delta to the northern community of Tuktoyaktuk. The Mackenzie River is the longest river in Canada. The Delta is the largest in Canada and the 12th largest in the world. It is approximately 62 km across. Tuktoyaktuk is a hamlet located on the delta and on the shores of the Arctic Ocean and lies north of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the earth. The community is commonly referred to as Tuk. A local guide will give you a cultural tour of the village, his home and take you to view the "Pingo's" which are mounds of ice buried under dirt and vegetation. You will have a chance to dip your toes in the frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean before returning to Inuvik later this afternoon. Overnight: As Above DAY 6: Sun 13 Jul INUVIK DAWSON CITY (BD) After breakfast, depart Inuvik and fly across the Arctic Circle to the 'gold rush' city of Dawson City in the Yukon. Enjoy a walking tour of Dawson City to become acquainted with this UNESCO Site with its numerous historic buildings and wooden sidewalks. Dawson City is situated where the Klondike and Yukon Rivers join. Gold mining started in 1896 with gold being discovered on Bonanza Creek. The areas creeks were quickly staked and the whole area became the scene of the world's largest gold rush in history to date and was known as the "Klondike Gold Rush". Perhaps this evening try your luck at the "Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino", the first legalized gambling casino in Canada. Overnight: Dawson City DAY 7: Mon 14 Jul DAWSON CITY FAIRBANKS (BD) This morning visit the gold dredge on Bonanza Creek and have the chance to try your hand at panning for this elusive fortune, before transferring to the airport for a flight to Fairbanks, Alaska. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel with the balance of the day free. Overnight: Fairbanks DAY 8: Tue 15 Jul FAIRBANKS (D) Following breakfast, board the sternwheeler Discovery for a cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Later, visit the University of Alaska Museum during your Fairbanks city tour and also stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline. Free time this afternoon until this evening's salmon and ribs BBQ. Overnight: As above DAY 9: Wed 16 Jul FAIRBANKS TALKEETNA (B) This morning board the Alaska Railroad's flagship train and travel to Talkeetna with a stop at Denali National Park enroute. Travel past sparkling salmon streams and stands of birch and spruce come into view, while carpets of fireweed add dramatic purple to the landscape. Arrive in Talkeetna mid-afternoon and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. Overnight: Talkeetna DAY 10: Thu 17 Jul TALKEETNA ANCHORAGE (BL) Today, travel 130 miles roundtrip through Denali State Park and into the National Wild River of "Devil's Gorge" where only a few have ventured and is abundant with wildlife. This afternoon board the Denali Star Train and continue from Talkeetna into Anchorage, arriving at around 8:00pm. Overnight: Anchorage DAY 11: Fri 18 Jul ANCHORAGE (B) A free day to explore Anchorage on your own. Perhaps visit the local museum or maybe take a float plane ride out to one of the many lakes that are found in the region or a flight tour to Mt. McKinley to view this majestic mountain from the air. There are many other optional excursions available. Overnight: As above DAY 12: Sat 19 Jul BOARD CRUISE (BLD) Transfer today to Whittier to board the Coral Princess to commence your Inside Passage cruise to Vancouver. Whittier is at the head of Passage Canal, a fjord of Western Prince William Sound and is a year round ice-free port and a focal point for marine activity and freight transfer from sea train barge serving South Central Alaska. The city town site lies on a fan-shaped delta on the south shore of Passage Canal. The delta, approximately a mile square, is bordered by Whittier Creek on the west and by a mountain ridge on the east. At the west end of Passage Canal is a delta, commonly known as "West Camp" or the "Head of the Bay," about 1 ½ square miles in area. 3 DAY 13: Sun 20 Jul CRUISING: HUBBARD GLACIER (BLD) As we cruise today, see the Hubbard Glacier, a tidewater glacier in the U.S. state of Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada. From its source in the Yukon, the glacier stretches 122 km to the sea at Yakutat Bay and Disenchantment Bay. It is the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska with an open calving face over 10 km wide. The Hubbard Glacier is also one of the most active glaciers of its kind in Alaska. These glaciers calve when giant pieces of ice crack off the head of the glacier and fall into the sea. While the faces of most glaciers advance very slowly if at all, Hubbard is an exception, its face is continually moving farther out into the sea. Overnight: As Above DAY 14: Mon 21 Jul CRUISING: GLACIER BAY (BLD) On our cruising today, see Glacier Bay, located in south-eastern Alaska. It runs north northwest to south southeast for about 105 km and is located 50 air miles west of Juneau near the northern end of the Alaska "panhandle." It ranges from 5-30 km wide. Glacier Bay and the surrounding land is the site of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Within Glacier Bay, visitors can voyage to numerous inlets to witness 16 huge tidewater glaciers plunging into the icy fjords. There are humpback whales in July and early August. Minke and orca whales also regularly swim these waters. On land, brown, black and rare glacier bears (with a blue-tinted fur) can be seen foraging for food along the gravel beaches. Over 200 bird species have been identified in the area. Overnight: As Above DAY 15: Tue 22 Jul CRUISING: SKAGWAY (BLD) Spend the day in Skagway, once the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon with the hope of striking it rich. Skagway may have boasted the shortest route to the Klondike, but it wasn't the easiest. Over 100 years ago, the White Pass route through the Coast Mountains and the shorter but steeper Chilkoot Trail were used by countless stampeders. Many a would-be miner perished on the treacherous Chilkoot Trail. The gold rush was a boon and by 1898, Skagway was Alaska's largest town with a population of about 20,000. Hotels, saloons, dance halls and gambling houses prospered. But when the gold yield dwindled in 1900, so did the population as miners quickly shifted to new finds in Nome. Today, Skagway has less than 1,000 residents. It still retains the flavor of the gold rush era. Overnight: As Above DAY 16: Wed 23 Jul CRUISING: JUNEAU (BLD) Your cruise arrives in Juneau today. In 1880, it was slow going for Joe Juneau and Richard Harris as they searched for gold with the help of Native guides. After climbing mountains, forging streams and facing countless difficulties, they found nuggets "as large as beans." From their discovery came three of the largest gold mines in the world. By the end of World War II, more than $150 million in gold had been mined. Eventually the mines closed, but the town Joe Juneau founded became the capital of Alaska and the business of gold was replaced by the business of government. Some 30,000 people live in Juneau. Its total area makes it one of the biggest towns, in size, in the world. Only Kiruna, Sweden, and Sitka, Alaska, exceed Juneau's 3,248 square miles. Today Juneau is famous not only for gold and government but also for its breathtakingly beautiful glaciers and stunning views of both water and mountains. Overnight: As Above DAY 17: Thu 24 Jul CRUISING: KETCHIKAN (BLD) Stop today in Ketchikan, known as Alaska's "First City" because it's the first major community travellers come to as they journey north. Located on an island, Ketchikan began life as an Indian fishing camp. The name Ketchikan comes from a Tlingit phrase that means "eagle with spread-out wings," a reference to a waterfall near town. In the early 1900s, when gold was Alaska's claim to fame, fishing and timber industries were established in Ketchikan. The growth of these industries helped make this Inside Passage port Alaska's fourthlargest city. Visitors to Ketchikan will be intrigued by its rich Native heritage, which includes the world's oldest collection of totem poles at Totem Heritage Center. The Haida, Tlingit and Tsimshian are all a part of the city's colorful history. Ketchikan, with its abundance of salmon, is also a sportfishing paradise. Sightseers will be impressed with both the scenic town and its surroundings, especially Misty Fjords National Monument. Overnight: As Above

4 DAY 18: Fri 25 Jul CRUISING: AT SEA (BLD) Continue cruising south today, travelling through the scenic Inside Passage. The Inside Passage of the Alaska Panhandle and coastal British Columbia is a coastal route for oceangoing vessels along a series of passages between the mainland and the coastal islands. The scenery along the Inside Passage offers pristine water, snowcapped mountains, deep fjords and forested islands. With its mild, maritime climate, this area is prime habitat for bald eagles, sea lions, porpoise and whales. The picturesque coastal communities are rich in history. Russian influence is well preserved in churches and other historical structures.
