3 WELCOME WELCOME TO LIVING IN FINLAND AND IN TAMPERE! This guide to the City of Tampere reaches out to you, a foreign-language resident who has recently moved to Tampere. The guide is a collection of information concerning the public and private services that are essential for new residents. Non-municipal service providers are responsible for their respective data. The City of Tampere considers it important that all residents of Tampere, regardless of their mother tongue, can benefit from the same services. There are over 200,000 people resident in Tampere, some 6,000 of which are foreign nationals. When the neighbouring municipalities are included, the number is over 7,000. All in all, Tampere has residents from some 125 countries. The largest groups of foreign nationals originate from Estonia, Sweden, Germany and Great Britain within the EU, and Russia, Iraq, Afghanistan, China and India from elsewhere. Over the past few years, Tampere has paid special attention to developing the Information Society. The website of the City of Tampere (www.tampere.fi) has a lot of useful information in Finnish and English. The City of Tampere contributes to the national Infopankki (www.infopankki.fi), a comprehensive source of information for immigrants about living in Finland and the country itself. Personal advice is available, for instance, at the Unipoint Cultural Centre. Unipoint is situated in the Old Library Building near the Central Square (Keskustori), behind the Old Church. Unipoint s contact information can be found in this guide. Best regards, City of Tampere Aleksis Kiven katu C P.O.Box 487, Tampere Tel.
