6 Theoretical Framework PREVENTION SUBCATEGORIES 1. Universal prevention - targets the whole population or a population group, that has not been identified on the basis of individual risk 2. Selective prevention - focuses on subgroups who live in risk situations, which place them at a higher than average likelihood of developing a mental disorder 3. Indicated prevention - targets individuals who have detectable symptoms or signs of deteriorating mental health, but do not meet diagnostic criteria (Mrazek & Haggerty, 1994) 6

7 Health in Focus PROJECT GOALS 1. To produce a plan for mental health promotion in the area 2. To establish subprojects targeting central issues and developing services 7

8 Health in Focus MENTAL HEALTH IS BUILT IN THE DAILY LIFE Mental health is a resource that helps us to enjoy life and to cope with life s problems Mental health emerges from our experiences in the family, school, work place, environment and community The majority of mental health promoting actions are implemented by sectors of society other than health care Health care has the role of empowering other actors 8

9 Broad Collaboration FUNDING, WORK GROUPS AND PERSONNEL Government funding (75 % of the costs, National project to secure the future of health care ) for two years A full-time project co-ordinator (psychologist) Multi-professional and multi-sectoral steering group, led by the director of the Health Care District Project group, consisting of mental health professionals Every subproject has its own project group, consisting of people with relevant expertise 9

10 Subprojects OBJECTIVES 1. Child-centered structured family counselling for parents considering divorce 2. Establish a network of educators for youth 3. Develop a work community conflict management model for Occupational Health Care 4. Mental health promotion for older people 5. Modelling the regional crisis interventions 6. Depression prevention 10

11 Subproject 1 FAMILY COUNSELING FOR PARENTS CONSIDERING DIVORCE TARGET GROUP: Parents who are considering getting divorced. GOAL: Making the child heard in a divorce situation. Promote the collaboration of parents in taking care of the child. Prevent problems of adjustment in children. METHOD: Child-centred structured family counselling. 11

12 Subproject 3 WORKING MODEL FOR OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH CARE IN CASES OF WORK COMMUNITY CONFLICTS TARGET GROUP: Work community GOAL: Good occupational health services for conflict situations in the workplace. To promote a well-functioning workplace. To prevent psychological stress in staff. METHOD: To develop a working model for the occupational health department to be used in cases of conflicts in the working community. 12

13 Subproject 5 MODELING THE REGIONAL CRISIS INTERVENTIONS TARGET GROUP: People in psychological crisis situations. GOAL: Efficient crisis intervention in different stages of the crisis. To promote people s natural resources to overcome crisis. To prevent PTSD and other negative consequences of traumatization. METHOD: To develop a model for crisis interventions in a regional collaboration project. 13
