1 Global Passport Project Activities and Projected Outcomes INPUTS ACTIVITIES OUTPUTS OUTCOMES (Short & CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies (BAGS) Faculty Forum Foreign Language Across the Curriculum Less Commonly Taught Languages Facilitate faculty development of new, preprofessional BA in Global Studies: administer course development grants, administer degree, recruit and advise students, create and distribute publicity Faculty and teaching academic staff from a wide variety of disciplines discuss interdisciplinary curricular options and ideas. Provide grants for foreign language curriculum development Establish foreign language requirement in conjunction with BAGS Innovative new degree program that draws on and fortifies UWM s existing strengths Increased enrollments in internationally-focused degree programs, foreign language courses, international-content courses, overseas study and internships Increased offerings and diversity of offerings with international/language content New framework for crosscampus interdisciplinary collaboration Increased cooperation between UWM s colleges and schools Greater number of students receive preprofessional education with language skills, practical experience and overseas knowledge Increased opportunities for faculty development and research Positive feedback by international educators and their academic and professional colleagues Students are prepared with current information and skills relevant to today s global society Students foreign language skills are relevant for a variety of academic and professional purposes. Public and students are aware of international education opportunities at UWM UWM s faculty and student body are internationally aware and knowledgeable UWM offers unique international studies programming. Students become global citizens UWM establishes a reputation for skilled, interculturally-competent graduates UWM develops a culture of sharing and exchange of ideas among faculty from various disciplines UWM becomes a destination campus for students desiring preprofessional education with an international focus

2 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH Annual Spring Conference Mini-Conferences New Directions in International Studies Book Series CIE Occasional Papers Faculty Hiring Visiting Scholars Faculty Travel Awards Curriculum Development Awards Organize annual interdisciplinary, three-day scholarly conference around an international theme Support faculty-led small conferences related to international topics Edit papers presented in annual conference for published volume Publish and distribute papers on international topics from UWM faculty and visiting scholars Work with appropriate divisions and departments to recruit faculty with international expertise Host one visiting scholar per year in a field relating to Global Studies Administer grants to support international travel for research, curriculum development, professional development, or study abroad enhancement Provide grants to support global studies, foreign language, and study abroad development Scholars and practitioners from a variety of academic and professional fields exchange ideas and results of research with the public, faculty and students Book is published Occasional Papers are published and distributed to academics, scholars and other parties Increased numbers of faculty with international expertise are hired Visiting faculty lecture and share their ideas and research with interested UWM faculty, K-12 teachers, and the public UWM faculty conduct internationally-focused research UWM faculty develop new or revise existing courses and programs Enhancement of and contribution to larger academic work and interdisciplinary dialogue on international themes Cultivation of strong working relationship between CIE and faculty Provide framework for collaboration and exchange with colleagues from other disciplines Greater public awareness of international issues and UWM faculty expertise International content and results of recent research are incorporated into curriculum A culture of global awareness in UWM faculty, students, and the community Furthering of crossdisciplinary research in the global studies field

3 K-12 TEACHER AND PUBLIC OUTREACH Global Studies Summer Institute International Studies Resource Network Internet Resource Guides Brown Bag Lectures Foreign Film Series Plan and coordinate an annual four-day program providing K-12 educators with information and resources for teaching students about international issues and their practical application for the classroom Publish a newsletter highlighting upcoming events, including teacher workshops, conferences and other UWM programs and resources Maintain a teaching resource library with a variety of different films and curricular materials Compile and publish annually a list of key websites on broad international topics with special attention to resources for teaching Coordinate and publicize lectures by local or visiting scholars on international topics Coordinate and publicize foreign language films and film series Forum for interaction between teachers and faculty Teachers learn about and acquire resources on a new topic each year Teachers receive information about and participate in international events at UWM Teachers use materials from the resource library to incorporate international content into the classroom Teachers, academics, students and international education professionals use Internet Resource Guide to access international information on line Scholars and filmmakers share information about their areas of interest and expertise with faculty, students and the public Stronger communication and information-sharing between teachers and faculty Increased knowledge of contemporary global issues among teachers Improved access to and utilization of information and curricular resources among teachers Improved public access to and increased public interest in foreign language resources and programming Increased awareness of UWM s international education activities and services among the public, teachers, faculty and students Greater community and campus awareness of international issues Internationalization of K- 12 curricula K-12 students attain a broad global perspective UWM becomes a primary resource provider for K-12 international curriculum development A culture of international academic exchange between teachers and faculty A culture of global awareness in UWM graduates and the community

6 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & SCHOLARS: INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE UWM COMMUNITY Immigration and Admissions Advising Health Insurance Advising International Student Applications International Student Programming Employment Advising International Student Recruitment Advise 900+ students and 200+ scholars re. immigration, academic programs, and living in Milwaukee/USA Assist students and scholars with immigration applications Ensure all students enroll in accident/sickness insurance plan; advise students on health insurance, what to do when ill or injured Evaluate applications, foreign education credentials, determine transfer credit, decide re. undergraduate, recommend re. graduate applications Process admission letters and initial immigration documents Plan and coordinate new student orientations, field trips, activities that encourage interchange between international and US-born students Initiate a program in which students speak about their countries in K-12 classrooms File, advise and monitor H1-B (employee) and permanent resident visa petitions Recruit students Students and scholars are aware of proper steps to take for immigration processing and receive advice on how to live here legally and comfortably and achieve their academic objectives Ensure compliance with federal laws requiring health insurance coverage Evaluation of applications is standardized and accurate Students receive notification of admission and information about classes, housing, immigration, student life at UWM Students learn first-hand about the area its history, culture, etc. Students have the opportunity to get involved with the campus, K-12 and the Milwaukee community Each visitor is legally present and has filed the proper paperwork and fulfills duties for employer as planned Increase number of international students who apply, attend UWM Students have a fulfilling and rewarding experience at UWM and are able to remain to complete their academic objectives ISSS services are quick and efficient, and meet the needs of constituents as determined by evaluation and data tracking. Reduction in the processing time for admissions applications and response time to admissions queries Quick and efficient reaction in a health or other emergency Students not only share their culture, but also learn about and become involved with local or American culture two way internationalization K-12 curriculum is enhanced through global awareness and contact Foreign students and scholars receive up-to-date immigration information and services Internationalization of student body Internationalization of the UWM student body, faculty and staff Provide and establish overseas a reputation overseas for quality service and education at UWM Reduce risk and liability for international students, faculty and staff and for UWM International networks of students, graduates, community members
