Ideation (When Traditional Brainstorming Just Doesn t Work) Mark Jannone Atlantic Health System Morristown, NJ

What is Creativity? Creativity is the process of generating somethingnew Creativity is the process of generating something new, something original that has value to an individual, group, organization, industry or society

Components of Creativity

What Is Innovation? The creation, development, and implementation of a new product or service with the goal of improving efficiency, effectiveness, quality or competitive advantage. Innovation is linked with creativity and involves taking unique/untried ideas and turning them into reality through invention, research, and new product or process development. t

Creativity Springboard to Innovation Creativity: Not only a process but a skill. Skill of generating something new. Creativity it is not mystical. Every person possesses this skill

Thinking Strategies Creativity not same as intelligence Most people think reproductively Creatives think productively Better to invent your own way than to look up old solution.

Seeing Things Differently Creativity techniques show how to generate ideas. You will rethink the way you see things. The arrow heads changed your focus. Creativitytechniques techniques willchange the wayyoufocusyou your attention. Need to reverse our conventional thinking patterns

Different Point of View Restate problem to generate multiple perspectives. p 1. Make it more global. 2. Separate the parts from the whole. 3. Change the words in some fashion. 4. Make positive action statements. 5. Switch perspective. 6. Use multiple perspectives. 7. Use questions.

Change the Words in Some Fashion Identify key verb in problem statement. Change key verb several times. In what ways might I increase sales In what ways might I attract sales In what ways might I repeat sales In what ways might I magnify sales In what ways might I encourage sales In what ways might I target sales

Actual products: Not All Ideas Are Good

Stages of Creative Problem Solving Process The eight stages of the creative problem solving process are: 1. Analyzing the environment 2. Recognizing a problem 3. Identifyingthe the problem 4. Making assumptions 5. Generating alternatives 6. Choosing among alternatives 7. Implementing the chosen solution 8. Controlling for results

Analyzing the Environment What is going gon inside and outside of the organization? Find opportunities and take advantage of them before somebody else does. Nokia Example

Recognizing a Problem Need to be aware that an opportunity exists. Howard Schultz?

Making Assumptions Assumptions about the conditions of future factors in the problem situation. What will the state of the economy be? Assumptions may be a major constraint on the potential success of a solution

Generating Alternatives Cataloging gknown options. Generating additional options. Follows a series of steps. More interested in quantity than quality in this stage.

Choosing Among Alternatives Systematic evaluation of alternatives against specific criteria. What might some criteria be?

Implementing the Chosen Solution Set specific goals and reasonable deadlines. Gain support of others from your solution. Implementation requires persistent attention. Anticipate and overcome obstacles.

Controlling for Results Evaluate results. Was the problem solved? Track results. What should be monitored? Make refinements.

Creativity Tools FCB Grid SCAMPER Mind Mapping Stravinsky Effect Lotus Blossom

SCAMPER Apply a checklistof 9 creative principles. Everything new comes from something that already exists.

SCAMPER Substitute Replace one thing with another until you find the right idea. Things, Places, Procedures, People, etc.

SCAMPER Substitute Questions to ask: What can be substituted? Who can be substituted? What items can be substituted? What material can be substituted? What place or scenario can be substituted? What other approach can be used? What other format can be used? Other processes or procedures?

SCAMPER Combine Combine previously unrelated ideas, good or services to p y, g create something new.

SCAMPER Combine Questions to ask: What materials can be combined? What units can be combined? What ideas can be combined? What purposes can be combined? What products can be combined? What resources can be combined?

SCAMPER Adapt New ideas are based on objects and ideas already in existence. Your idea needs to be original only in its adaptation to the problem.

SCAMPER Adapt Questions to ask: What idea can be adapted? What process can be adapted? What different contexts can the concept be put in? What behaviors can be adapted? What materials can be adapted? What else is like this? Does the past offer a parallel? Whom could I emulate? What ideas outside my field can I incorporate?

SCAMPER Magnify Bigger is better. How to add to or multiply your idea, product or service.

SCAMPER Magnify Questions to ask: What features can be added? What can be exaggerated? td? What functions can be added? Canitbe overstated? How can it be more frequent? What would add extra value? What can be duplicated?

SCAMPER Modify Change what you or your competitors do.

SCAMPER Modify Questions to ask: How can it be modified for another purpose? How can it be modified for the better? In what other form should it be? How can it be given a new twist? t? How can the packaging be modified? How can standard procedures be modified? How can the marketing be changed?

SCAMPER Put To Other Uses What else can be done with a product or service.

SCAMPER Put To Other Uses How else can it be used? What else can be made from this? What other uses can it have as i? is? What other uses can it have if modified? Other markets?

SCAMPER Eliminate Sometimes subtracting something from your subject yields new ideas. Through repeated trimming of objects and processes, you can narrow your challenge to what is truly necessary. Find things to streamline, reduce, eliminate, omit and miniaturize. i i

SCAMPER Eliminate What can be streamlined? What is not necessary? What can be omitted? Can it be made smaller? What could be divided or split up? How can it be minimized? Can it be understated?

SCAMPER Rearrange Creativity consists largely of rearranging what we know in order to find out what we don t know Can offer countless alternatives.

SCAMPER Rearrange What other arrangement might work better? How could the schedule be changed? How could the pattern be changed? How can the pace be changed? How could components be rearranged?

SCAMPER Reverse Reversing your perspective p opens up your thinking. Look at opposites and you ll see things you normally miss.

SCAMPER Reverse How can a failure be turned into a success? What negative can be reversed? Can the schedule hdl be reversed? Can services be reversed? Canthe process be reversed? What would be unexpected?

Choosing Among Alternatives Screening of ideas is carried out in 2 stages: 1. Eliminate least popular ideas through voting. 2. Perform criteria based screening.

Idea Voting Guidelines Write ideas on flip chart paper. Each participant receives 5 stick on dots. Participants vote for best ideas by placing dots next to name. Tally votes to identify top 10 ideas.

Screening Matrix Guidelines For each of the top 10 voted ideas: Determine weights for criteria Rank with respect to each criteria (scale 1 10) Weight x Rank = Score Add criteria scores for total score Identify top 3 ideas (highest total scores)

Screening Matrix Form
