1 Second network-wide QUICS training event at Youth Hostel Lultzhausen, Luxembourg, 15 th 19 th Overview June 2015 Remote sensing, data collection and data validation Upscaling and downscaling what about uncertainties? This report summarises the second network-wide training event, held at the Youth Hostel in Lultzhausen, Luxembourg, from 15 th to 19 th June The Youth Hostel is located on the banks of Lac Haute-Sûre which provides a considerable amount of Luxembourg s drinking water, and is located in the middle of the QUICS case study catchment (Fig. 1). QUICS group photo on the Haute-Sûre lake The aims of this training event were: To provide the fellows with knowledge and some hands-on experience on different data collection techniques commonly used in catchments, such as remote sensing of rainfall, and monitoring volume and substance flows, as well as techniques for sampling design optimization and data validation. The type and amount of data collected in the two QUICS case study catchments, Eindhoven/Dommel and Haute-Sûre were introduced. To provide the fellows with knowledge and some hand-on experience on geostatistical interpolation and methods for up- and downscaling and spatial uncertainty propagation analysis. To introduce the fellows to the Haute-Sûre catchment. To gauge the fellows presentation skills by letting all fellows briefly present their work done so far to each other and the Work Package Leaders, Training and Recruitment Committee and two members of the External Advisory Board (EAB). Fellows prepared and provided a school outreach event. 1

Alma reminded everyone about regularly updating Personal Development Plans (PDPs) and the need for careful planning of secondments and training opportunities and the rest of everyone s individual research. The importance of dissemination and outreach was emphasized, and the new QUICS twitter feed introduced (@QuicsEU). Miguel Rico-Ramirez (University of Bristol) provided an introduction on Remote Sensing and rainfall monitoring and uncertainty in weather radar rainfall (Fig. 2). 2

Miguel Rico-Ramirez provided an introduction on precipitation measurement, and described possible sources of uncertainty within the different techniques Tuesday 16 th June Gerard Heuvelink (Wageningen University) provided a short lecture on methods for design and optimization of sampling networks and automated data validation, followed by a practical exercise in testing some methods by the fellows (Fig. 3). Kai Klepiszewksi (LIST) explained about European legislation and standards regarding surface water quality, and water quality measuring techniques, followed by a hands-on demonstration of a UV-VIS sensor (Fig. 4). After these introductions on sampling and monitoring, Francois Clemens (TUDelft) and Christian Braun (LIST) provided information on the data available for the Eindhoven/Dommel and Haute-Sûre catchments, as well as how these data are managed and quality controlled (Fig. 5). Introductions on the datasets available in the Eindhoven/Dommel and Haute-Sûre QUICS case study catchments Wednesday 17 th June Gerard Heuvelink provided another brief lecture followed by an exercise on geostatistical interpolation and methods for up- and downscaling and spatial uncertainty propagation analysis. The rest of the day was filled with presentations from the fellows about their work done so far, to each other and the Work Package Leaders, Training and Recruitment Committee and two members 4

5 of the External Advisory Board (EAB) (Ana Deletic from Monash University, Australia and Jasper Vrugt from University of California Irvine, USA) (Fig 6). There were good discussions and some constructive critical questions, especially from the EAB members. Fig 6. The first time the fellows got to present their research carried out so far to the QUICS ITN Thursday 18 th June In the morning we continued with the fellows presentations. Although not originally in the schedule, we also asked both Jasper and Ana to introduce themselves and their work, for which they had kindly prepared a brief presentation the evening before (Fig. 7). The EAB members Ana Deletic from Monash University, Australia and Jasper Vrugt from University of California Irvine, USA introducing their work In the afternoon, we visited a sewage pumping station in Lultzhausen and a CSO structure with storage tank in Kaundorf (Fig. 8). These structures all form part of the relatively new sewerage system built to protect the water quality in the Lac Haute-Sûre. 5

The outreach event was held at the premises of SEBES (Syndicat des Eaux du Barrage d'esch-sur-sûre) and the students were years old. The morning started with an introduction to the QUICS work and short lectures on the water cycle, water quality and modelling. The lectures were followed by hands on experiments on water infiltration into different types of soil, measuring ph, Dissolved Oxygen, Electrical conductivity and Turbidity from different water samples, as well as a computer modelling exercise on calculating velocity and flow in a channel of water. The day was finished with a climate chance and investment decision making game (Fig 9). Fig. 9. School outreach event at SEBES 6
