3 Remembering Kim Clare ALUMNI NEWSLETTER SPRING 2014 Eulogy Excerpts from Kim s Memorial Service It is my very sad task to tell the University of Manitoba and the wider community of the passing on Feb. 18 of Professor Kim Clare, the Director of the Inner City Social Work Program at the William Norrie Centre. Kim began her career as a Lecturer in 1983 in the Inner City Program and became Director and Associate Professor in 1993, holding that position for much of her career. She was also an Acting Associate Dean of Social Work (Undergraduate Programs) July 1, June 30, In addition to teaching and advising thousands of undergraduate and graduate students in the Inner City and M.S.W. programs, Kim was an exceptionally skilled and beloved administrator, researcher and community activist in Winnipeg s inner city community. She participated in the Academic Enhancement Fund, UM Connecting to Kids Project, and most recently was participating with colleagues on a grant exploring the impact of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry Child Welfare Initiative on Child and Family Services in Northern Manitoba. She sat on many university committees and community boards notably the Chairperson of the Makoonsag Intergenerational Child Care Centre, a founder and board member of the Legal Help Centre, and member of Advisory/Steering Committee of the Aboriginal Visioning for the North end, Director of Developmental Services (Community Services) for the YWCA, and Chairperson of the Manitoba Women s Advisory Council from Reflecting those skills, Kim was awarded the University of Manitoba Outreach Award twice, once in 1988 and again in 2013, as well as winning the Canadian Association of Social Work Distinguished Social Work Award in 2001 and the Eira Babs Friesen Award for service to the advancement of women, sponsored by the YM-YWCA in The loss for the profession of social work, the Faculty of Social Work, the wider university community, and particularly Winnipeg s Aboriginal and North end communities is immeasurable. Kim was loved and respected by all who knew her. We extend our sincere condolences to her partner Kathy Jones, their daughter Gina, Kim s mother Mary, Richard Hill, Dennis Hill and family, and Kim and Kathy s many close and dear friends. Dr. Lyn Ferguson, Associate Dean, Graduate Programs & Research...Today I ve been given an honour and a privilege, the opportunity of speaking about this incredible woman, this person who showed so many of us a special warmth and love....i imagine that each of us here today can think of some special words that we would use to describe how we knew and understood Kim, our impressions of Kim: Gentle. Thoughtful. Kind. Brave....She had such a way with words. She could take really complex ideas and translate them to make them simple, and workable.... She found community anywhere. She found common threads everywhere. Because she had the gift of translating big ideas into small workable acts, she was able to join people from different backgrounds into a common cause, not with rhetoric but with example....she treated people with deep kindness, made time and space for everyone, knowing that at some level although we are all the same with the same fears, longing, and hopes we are NOT all born with the same opportunities, resources and life circumstances....she was grateful to be seen as who she truly was, and as who she could become, and she communicated with others both as who they were right now, and as persons becoming, too. She listened, and she heard....she was always generous with her gifts of gentleness, intellect, humor, love, trust, compassion, hope. Kim lived a very good life. I am so thankful for her. Eulogy Given by Shirley Grosser, Senior Scholar umanitoba.ca/social_work 3

4 FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK Student Excellence Student Profiles The Faculty of Social Work would like to highlight two first-year B.S.W. students who have shared their passion of social work with over 40 high school students at this year s University of Manitoba Info Days. We thank them for aiding the Faculty in sharing their knowledge and experiences with students interested in pursuing careers in social work. Megan Ferguson I applied to the University of Manitoba s social work program because I knew I wanted to help people find solutions to their problems and achieve social change and social justice in society. I was also given the opportunity to enroll in an Option in Aging program that will provide me with added expertise, as I am interested in becoming a gerontological social worker. The social work program has been challenging, stimulating and exciting and has helped me acquire additional skills and confidence to be a successful social worker in the future. I have developed strong relationships with faculty members and staff members through the support, experience and passion they have shared with me. Thus, I have had a positive experience in the program and have gained a better understanding of autonomy, empowerment, change and growth as integral aspects of the social work profession. James Urquhart My name is James Urquhart and I have completed a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Mary s University in philosophy, a Master s degree from Queen s University in philosophy, and am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Work program at the University of Manitoba. I was drawn to the Faculty of Social Work because I was interested in helping people foster the skills and resources they need to help improve themselves. I was also attracted to the option again that is offered through the University of Manitoba s Center on Aging. The faculty, staff and students in the social work program have made me feel welcome and have encouraged me to pursue my passions. I have also benefitted from the diversity of excellent teaching styles, small class sizes and most of all from my fellow classmates. 4 UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK

6 FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK Northern Social Work Program 30th Anniversary of the Northern Social Work Program In 1983, the U of M obtained funding from the provincial and federal government to offer an affirmative action B.S.W. degree program in Thompson. The purpose of the program was to provide an accessible B.S.W. degree education in Northern Manitoba and to provide opportunities for northern human resources development. It was designed to meet the needs of northern students and employers, and provide quality social work education for those who want to engage in northern and Aboriginal social work practice. The first students were admitted in the winter of The prevailing thinking at the time was that the program s life would be short term. Thirty years later the program is still going strong. This is a sign of not only a dedicated faculty, community, and provincial government but also of the continued need for social work education here. We have now graduated 330 students from the program, 76% of which are working in the north and 68% are of Aboriginal heritage. Some have gone on to graduate degrees, others to senior positions in government and First Nation s agencies. On the afternoon of March 14, 2014, we had a small celebration of our 30 years in the north as well as honouring national social work week. The celebration was attended by past graduates, current students, faculty and community members. After a prayer from our elder in residence, Jack Robinson, we had opening remarks about the past and future of the program from the Director, Colin Bonnycastle. Instructor Lori Oberdorfer then spoke on the purpose of Northern Network of Human Services. Our guest speaker was John Donavon, the Director of Addictions Foundation of Manitoba in Thompson. John provided a personal and rousing talk on the importance of mixing heart and head in social work practice. He particularly emphasized the need to build quality relationships between social workers and the people we serve. After his talk we shared food and memories. Thanks to all who were able to attend and share in both of these celebrations. Colin Bonnycastle Director, NSWP /Associate Professor John Donavon, Director of Addictions Foundation of Manitoba Faculty Profile Dr. Tuula Heinonen Recent Initiatives: Dr. Tuula Heinonen and Deana Halonen were successful in the Summer Innovation Fund 2014 competition, receiving an award of $2,500 to develop a course on artsbased inquiry, which will be targeted to final year Bachelors students and graduate students at the University as there is a need for pre-requisite research courses. The course will be developed this year and offered in summer, Dr. Tuula Heinonen and a colleague from Finland, M. Metteri, have had an abstract accepted at the joint IASSW and ICSW international social work conference in Melbourne in July, Their presentation will be about collective public applications in expressive visual arts for social work. Dr. Meng Liu and Dr. Tuula Heinonen s abstract has been accepted for a conference hosted by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. The conference will be held at Tsinghua University in Beijing on May 9 and 10. The conference is entitled, Transforming Canada-China Educational Cooperation: Significant Legacies and Future Challenges. 6 UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA, FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK

8 FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK Notes from the Dean It has been a very busy winter semester in the Faculty of Social Work, and we have had both very sad and happier changes occurring. The very sad event, of course, was the death in February of our beloved colleague, teacher, and friend, Kim Clare. As Inner City Program Director, Associate Professor, and a long-time community activist, Kim, was well known and highly esteemed within the Faculty and in various circles at the University of Manitoba, in the North End, and across Winnipeg. She was a quiet yet powerful and positive presence in all of our lives. She is deeply missed. The Faculty is experiencing other passages with the retirement of three colleagues. Prof. Brad McKenzie is undergoing a selfdescribed transition as he retires as a longtime faculty member, but continues with his scholarly work, community involvement, and graduate student supervision. His 38 years of service to the Faculty were celebrated at an event in March, and brought together academic colleagues, staff, students, community partners, and Brad s family members and friends. Brad says that he won t miss the meetings, but we know that he will continue to make his mark as a Social Work academic. Our other two colleagues who will soon be retiring are Claudette Cormier and Nancy Clyde. Claudette provides administrative and financial support to Faculty researchers, and Nancy supports the Field Education activities at Inner City and Fort Garry campuses. Both of them have given many years of dedicated service to the Faculty of Social Work, and their contributions have been highly valued. Two other milestones need to be mentioned. Our colleague Dr. Judy Hughes has been granted tenure. Dr. Lawrie Deane has kindly agreed to take on the role of Interim Director at the Inner City Social Work Program for the next few months, while we recruit a person to fill this position on an ongoing basis. And speaking of recruitment, we are also currently searching for new colleagues to fill three faculty positions. Two are at the Fort Garry campus, and one is at the Northern Social Work Program in Thompson. Change and renewal are in the works! Along this line, the Faculty is also undertaking a strategic planning exercise in which a range of colleagues from the community will be involved, as well as faculty, staff, and students. When completed, this plan will map out our path for next few years. We face budgetary and other challenges, but we also need to recognize our ongoing successes and decide how to best make our mark as we move forward in our teaching, research and community service roles. As I complete my first year as Dean, I look forward to meeting many more of our alumnae, students, and community partners. Convocation and other events will gather us together, and the spring and summer in Manitoba is an opportunity to enjoy good times together and renew our connections within the discipline and profession of Social Work. Dr. Jim Mulvale, Dean of Social Work Online Course Available for Students SWRK 4070 (G48) Social Work & Residential Schools The Distance Delivery Program would like to announce an online elective for Social Work students at the University of Manitoba, which is being offered by the Prairie Child Welfare Consortium to students across western Canada. This course will be offered completely online in May & June, The online course includes Social Work students from the Universities of Manitoba, Calgary, and Regina. It begins with an examination of federal Indian education policy and the establishment of industrial and residential schools, and ends with an examination of current attempts at reconciliation. Students will be encouraged to consider the legacy of residential schools for First Nations peoples and communities and to consider how the emerging models of practice can consider and respond to past and ongoing oppressions. All work will be completed online and students may register for SWRK 4070 (G48) Social Work & Residential Schools CRN30795 through the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Social Work. This course will be offered by Rick Enns, University of Calgary, Faculty of Social Work.
