What GIM Chiefs Want when Recruiting a Clinician Educator Developed by Wildon Farwell and Jeff Whittle
Experts Seth Landefeld, UCSF Anna Maio, Creighton University Bob Murden, Ohio State University Russell Phillips, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Martin Shapiro, University of California, Los Angeles
Format Five minute presentations regarding an area likely to be of interest Ten minutes for audience questions All panelists respond Repeat x four Twenty minutes free format Q&A Evaluation
Agenda Educator s jobs and who gets them Russell Phillips How much education time does a CE need? Bob Murden What resources should you expect? Anna Maio Negotiating strategies Martin Shapiro
What Chiefs of General Internal Medicine Want When Recruiting a Clinician-Educator Russell S. Phillips, MD Chief, Division of General Medicine and Primary Care Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Harvard Medical School Boston, MA
Clinician-Educator Recruitment CLINICIAN-educator vs clinician-educator Hospital Medicine vs Office-Based Practice
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Division of General Medicine and Primary Care
Overview of Division Nearly 80 faculty (50 office-based practice, 15 hospital medicine, 15 research faculty) Major clinical programs (Healthcare Associates, College Health, HIV, Palliative Care, Ethics, Hospital Medicine) Teaching programs (Residency, Primary Care Residency, 2 Fellowships [General Medicine and Research in Alternative Medicine] )
BIDMC Job Descriptions for Clinician-Educator Roles Clinician-Educator Job Description Office Practice: Six 4-hour sessions of patient care, and one 4-hour session of co-management Inpatient coverage of primary care patients Fifty-hour uncompensated teaching expectation (attending, didactic teaching, precepting medical students, etc.) Participation in academic activities of Division, committee work in practice or hospital
BIDMC Job Descriptions for Clinician-Educator Roles Hospital Medicine Teaching Service 50% time direct patient care, 50% teaching (primarily resident education) Non-Teaching Service 100% time direct patient care
Opportunities for Growth As leadership positions become available, they are advertised to the entire faculty, followed by a competitive process to select the best fit for the position. Faculty are encouraged to be entrepreneurs, to help identify opportunities at the medical school or beyond. Only rarely do we recruit for positions such as Residency Program Director or Associate Director. Usually, these positions are filled from within. Our average office practice faculty member has about three sessions of direct patient care, reflecting changes in job description, or part-time status.
Qualifications Stellar recommendations from those with whom you have worked or trained Commitment to teaching and the academic mission Interest in educational scholarship (in the form of educational research of review articles) Positive outlook, low maintenance, fun to be around Efficient, productive Minority status desirable, full-time preferred Fellowship training Defined educational interest that meets Division need (e.g., men s health, women s health, anticoagulation, sexual dysfunction)
Advice Begin search in fall preceding desired job start (usually July 1 Sept. 1) Respond to ads, but send letters of inquiry to any program in which you are interested Negotiate, but only after you have a firm (written) job offer We are hiring, so please contact me if you are interested in working at BIDMC! rphillip@bidmc.harvard.edu
How Much Educational Time Should a Clinician-Educator Need/Expect? Robert A. Murden, M.D. Division Director General Internal Medicine The Ohio State University
NEED Researcher Generally accepted 70% protected time Clinician the more the merrier Number of procedures Number of service months Experience Educator: no objective data/guidelines
NEED Scholarly output Conference/meeting time Pure scholarship time Skills development*
SPECIAL NEEDS Program Director 50% paid protected time more time, better board scores Assistant Program Director 10-20% paid, 50% devoted Course Director 25% + third year clerkship Fellowship Director 10% + paid, 50% devoted
EXPECT Most true clinicianeducator jobs have 40-50% protected time (maximum 6 clinical sessions when not on service) Financial needs will vary
EXPECT Caveat in Primary Care 1-2 patient care hours outside of clinic for every 4 hours in clinic Six clinics can equal 8 clinics Strategy: reserve academic time
Clinician-Educator Salary and Benefits Anna Maio, M.D. Division Chief of GIM Creighton University Omaha, NE
Salary $129,000/year plus benefits (Assistant Professor just out of training) 1-2 years of salary are guaranteed depending on hospital/school support Starting salaries are nearly always the same; job assignments do not influence a higher or lower income
