1 CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY SAN MARCOS Procedure for Submitting Proposals for New Options, Concentrations, Special Emphases and Minors 1. Name of the campus submitting the request, the full and exact title of the proposed aggregate of courses, and whether it is an option, concentration, special emphasis, or minor. California State University San Marcos Minor in Quantitative Biology and Biostatistics (Minor Degree Program) 2. Full and exact title of the degree major program under which the aggregate of courses will be offered, where applicable. Department of Biological Sciences BS Degree 3. Options, concentrations, or special emphases already existing under the degree major program for which the new aggregate of courses is proposed. Biological Sciences has four concentrations for the BS degree: Molecular Cell, Physiology, Ecology, and General. The proposed minor will enhance the quantitative skills and knowledge of students pursuing any of these concentrations. This minor was slotted to start in 2011 according to the CAMP (it is listed as computational biology). 4. Department(s) to offer the aggregate courses. Biological Sciences Mathematics (required/optional course) Physics (optional course) 5. Purpose of the proposed aggregate of courses. The purpose of the QBB minor is to provide majors in biological sciences and related areas with formal recognition of their expanded knowledge and skills in scientific computing, modeling, and statistics that will result from completion of a suite of required and optional courses. Students who complete this minor will be well prepared for study at the graduate level, work in the private sector, or positions with government agencies or non-profits. Regardless of their choice of a career, the skills students will gain in this minor will serve them well. 6. Need for the proposed aggregate of courses. Biology is becoming far more data rich and computationally intensive. As a result, effective training of 21 st century biologists depends upon becoming more quantitative and more computational (Q&C). The need for biologists who are better trained to handle the explosion of data has been formally recognized as a major priority at national, state, and local levels. For example, over the past several years, initiatives have been launched at the federal level through the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, and the National Institutes of Health to promote enhanced Q&C training for majors in the life sciences.

This minor evolved from a 5- year, $1.25 million NIH curriculum improvement grant designed to enhance the quantitative and computational components of the BS degree in Biological Sciences and related areas. We are currently completing the third year of the grant. This grant has produced curricular changes in courses required for biological sciences majors including those in biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and math. One of the outcomes of the grant has been enhanced dialogue and cooperation among science, math, and computer sciences faculty on campus. This minor provides students with advanced training in three broad areas of quantitative and computational biology: statistics, programming, and modeling; this minor should appeal to majors in biology and closely related areas. Within the next two years we will propose another minor in bioinformatics that should attract majors in biology, biotechnology, and computer science. SEE NEXT PAGE FOR A LIST OF COURSES

Biol 365 Computing Skills for Biologists (3 units)-this course is currently being taught as a special topics course, Biology 396. An introduction to basic data management, computation, visualization, and programming as related to the biological sciences. Focuses on the use of spreadsheets as tools to solve computational problems that are commonly encountered by working biologists, including numerical optimization, curve fitting, randomization testing, bootstrapping, and stochastic simulation modeling. Pre-requisites: BIOL 210 and BIOL 211 and BIOL 215 Biol 420 Ecological Monitoring. (3 units) An overview of the various approaches used to assess ecological condition (status) and change over time (trend) for ecosystems, vegetation types, populations, and biological communities. Lectures that provide conceptual understanding will be combined with hands-on practical exercises in the lab, so that students will be prepared to apply their knowledge to real-world conservation problems. Pre-requisites: BIOL 215 and BIOL 354 As appropriate new courses are developed on campus, they will be incorporated into the minor. 10. List all resources needed for the first five years beyond those currently projected, including specific resource, cost, and source of funding. All of the existing required and elective courses proposed for the QBB minor have been modified to increase Q&C content. These changes were being funded by a 5-year NIH grant described in item #6 above. For each course, a faculty receives one course release and stipends for the summers before and after the first offering. None of the courses was designed exclusively for the QBB minor; all are either required or electives for existing degrees in Biological Sciences, Mathematics, or Applied Physics and are/will be periodically offered to serve these majors. Thus, the QBB will not impose a significant increased need for resources over what is needed to serve existing majors. All of the lower-division courses for the QBB minor are currently offered every semester. The Chair of Biological Sciences will work with Mathematics and Physics to ensure that at least one of the UD required courses in each category (statistics, computing, and modeling) and at least two of the UD electives will be offered each year.

As a result, effective training of 21 st century biologists requires dedicated training of students in quantitative and computational analyses. The purpose of the Minor in Quantitative Biology and Biostatistics is to provide Biological Sciences and related majors formal recognition of their expanded knowledge and skills in scientific computing, modeling, and statistics that will result from completion of a suite of required and elective courses. Students who complete this minor will be well prepared for graduate study, work in the private sector, or positions with government agencies or non-profits. Regardless of their choice of a career, the skills students gain in this minor will serve them well. The minor requires completion of 10 courses (32-33 units of credit), 5 courses (15-16 units) of which must be at the level. The five required lower division courses (17 units) are also required for majors in the biological sciences and can be double counted. At least two courses (6 units) at the level must be completed at CSUSM. Each course counted toward the minor must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better. At least three upper division courses (9-10 units) must be exclusive to the minor; i.e., not double-counted for the major and minor. The remaining 7 courses (23-24 units) may also be used to fulfill requirements and electives for any of the concentrations in the BS degree in Biological Sciences. Students are advised that some courses have prerequisites, and should plan accordingly.
