This program is primarily a day oriented program with the possibility of some evenings. This program consists of general education courses, courses specific to surgical technology and clinical experience in cooperation with a local hospital. This program is an eleven-month program which begins in the summer semester. It is continuous throughout the fall, winter and spring semesters. A certificate is awarded upon graduation from this program. A successful student is qualified to take the national exam to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). 2 Revised SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Chesapeake College Surgical Technology Program is an eleven-month program which begins in the summer semester and is continuous through the fall, winter and spring semesters. Through classroom instruction and clinical fieldwork, students will learn surgical techniques and essential skills needed in the surgical environment. Students will also learn the preparation and use of the operating room equipment and surgical instruments. The surgical technologist with the development of a surgical conscience will provide the surgical patient with the highest standards of care preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative. As the surgical technologist, you will prepare the operating room and the surgical equipment for each surgical procedure. You will assist the surgeon during the surgical procedure as an integral part of the surgical team. Enrollment in this curriculum is limited by the availability of clinical facilities. In addition to the scholastic standards required of all students in the college, surgical technology students must achieve a grade of "C" or better in each required BIO and SGT course in order to continue in and graduate from this program. The Surgical Technology Program includes the summer, fall, winter and spring semesters. There are a total of 38 credits. It requires 38 to 42 contact hours per week per semester. Although some evening classes may be required, this is a five-day (day-time) program. 3 Revised + Prerequisite or corequisite. See course description details in our catalog. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. To apply for admissions to Chesapeake College, please go to our website; 2. You should be able to download the application and information packet for the Surgical Technology program by going to our website, clicking on the links and filling out the request form; 3. Complete the placement tests (English, reading, and mathematics) administered in the Office of Student Services on the Wye Mills or Cambridge campus. 4. Request a copy of your official high school transcript and/or college to be sent to Chesapeake College Center for Allied Health, P.O. Box 8, Wye Mills, MD Contact the Nursing and Allied Health Advisor Lorraine Holden at , ext.2203 at the Wye Mills Campus to make an appointment and to review your high school transcript and placement test results/recommendations. 6. Apply for admission to the Surgical Technology Program. 7. Complete any remedial coursework prior to application for admission into the Surgical Technology Program 8. By March 1st of the year you wish to enter the Program, send the program application to Karen Jones, CST Program Director for Surgical Technology, with two letters of personal recommendation (ex. employer, teacher, friend, doctor, or minister) and a letter of intent. The letter of intent should include a statement of career goals and explain why the applicant has chosen a career in surgical technology. 9. The Program Director of Surgical Technology will schedule an appointment for applicant review. 10. Letters of acceptance will be issued by May 7 th. 11. After being acceptance into the Surgical Technology program, all students will be required to have background checks and drug testing at the student s expense. You will receive this information during orientation. The date and time will be in your acceptance letter. 12. After acceptance into the program, submission of a health record completed by a physician including documentation of Hepatitis B immunization in addition to other current immunizations and health insurance will be required. After acceptance, students must also obtain and keep current, Health Care Provider CPR certification throughout the entire program. 13. Program begins in the SUMMER semester. 14. Students will be required to purchase scrubs, and other PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). 2

4 Revised Class size is limited. The Surgical Technology Admissions Committee will interview all applicants who meet these criteria. Priority in the selection process will be given to applicants who have: 1. Previous experience providing medical patient care and /or sterile processing experience. 2. Grade point averages in relevant coursework. 3. Oral interview evaluations 4. Completion of all required courses. 5. Ability to demonstrate interest, professionalism, punctuality and appropriate behavior during OR shadow day. 6. Resident of the five counties served by Chesapeake College, or a resident of Anne Arundel County or Wicomico County, as several clinical facilities are located in these areas. 5 Surgical Technology Program AT Chesapeake College Frequently asked Questions What are a surgical technologist s responsibilities? Surgical technologists are responsible for assisting in the surgical suite in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative preparation and care of the surgical patient. Surgical Technologist prepares the operating room for the patient assuring that all instrumentation need have been sterilized properly and equipment is available. Surgical technologist prepare the sterile field as part of the surgical team they pass the proper surgical instrumentation to the surgeon during the surgical procedure. What are the physical demands of the surgical technologist? Students must be able to lift at least pounds. Instrument trays can be very heavy and lifting patient are part of the job. Student must be able to stand for long periods of time in awkward positions. Students may go for long periods of time without nourishment or breaks. The operating room is a fast paced and high stress environment. You may be required to thread a needle with a thread that is smaller than a hair. Your vision must be 20/30 or better, with or without corrective lenses. You will be required to assemble delicate equipment. Your hearing must fall within normal ranges, with or without corrective aids. These are examples only, and not meant to represent the full range of recommended standards. Personal Characteristics: The ability to perform under pressure in stressful and emergency situations is quality essential for surgical technologist. A stable temperament and strong sense of responsibility considerable patience, Manual dexterity and physical stamina are vital. Must be able to work quickly, and accurately, and must be detail oriented.

6 What are the responsibilities or demands surgeons place on surgical technologists? Surgeons expect surgical technologists to know and carry out proper aseptic technique and have a broad based knowledge of basic instrumentation and suture use. They also expect technologists to be able to identify basic anatomical structures, properly pass instruments and supplies and know how to deal with stressful situations. Is clinical experience provided in the program? Yes, students will participate in clinical in several different facilities. We are there to help not to do the work for you. Is there a lot of homework in the program? YES!! And there are a lot of tests. What is the job market for certified surgical technologist? The job market has tremendous possibilities throughout the USA.
