Promoting Student Success: Lessons Learned Algonquin College Ottawa, CN May 9, 2016 Vincent Tinto Distinguished University Professor Emeritus Syracuse University 1
Lessons Learned: Improvement in rates of student success does not arise by chance. It requires an intentional, structured and coordinated course of action that builds collaboration across campus and employs data to identify issues to address, improve practice, and close equity gaps. 2
Lessons Learned: Success in the first year, especially in the classroom, is the foundation upon which student success in college is built. 3
Lessons Learned: It is one thing to begin a program, it is another to sustain it and scale it up over time. 4

Basic Skills Linked Courses ESL English Accounting 22
The relationship between accounting and ESL is helping a lot because the accounting professor is teaching us to answer questions in complete sentences, to write better. And we are more motivated to learn vocabulary because it is accounting vocabulary, something we want to learn about anyway. I am learning accounting better by learning the accounting language better. 23
