2 1. Overview: VITALIS received the following participants from the school Zespół Szkół Elektrycznych im. J. Shortly after, they were introduced to their rooms where they were to reside during the time of their practical training. They were given some information concerning their stay in Germany as well as an introduction to the activities of the VITALIS company. The program for the 2

3 next two weeks was explained to the students and they could also ask questions about their stay and practical training in the region of Leipzig. Gut Wehlitz in Schkeuditz The pedagogical aim of the project is to advance the mobility of the participants in the European Community and to increase the attractiveness, quality and efficiency of vocational practical training. During their stay in Germany, the participants were to use their knowledge, skills and qualifications to facilitate their personal development, employability and participation in the European labor market. In their internship, the Polish trainees were to develop their international professional competence, their social and intercultural skills as well as their foreign language skills. What is more, the project aimed to raise the interest of young people in the early vocational training and to broaden their professional orientation and qualifications in the field of IT networks. The participants were also to get acquainted with different possibilities of further professional education in Germany. Various types of education paths and courses offered by numerous training institutions in Germany play a major role to achieve this goal. The German dual system of education gives German pupils excellent possibilities to implement their theoretical knowledge gained at the vocational schools and professional education centers in their practical work in the companies. 4 2. Practical Training: On Monday, February 09 th, 2015 the students started their practical training which they carried out in the modern equipped seminar room at Gut Wehlitz. During their practice the students received an extensive training course within the field of networks. First of all they got an introduction into the world of networks and discussed the differences and similarities of LAN, W- LAN and by radio. They also dealt intensely with various operation systems under MacOS. The students during their internship Furthermore the group got to know the standards of IPv4 and IPv6 and got an introduction to the software Filius. The acquired knowledge was put into practice directly by setting up a simple and a combined network project. Here they got to know the various ways of data sharing by data transfer, share and Peer-to-Peer. They also dealt with the installation of a LANnetwork and the needed hardware. During work at Gut Wehlitz 4

5 Therefore they finished cat5e cables, cabled the Mobile Workshop Units and installed the routers. The students got to know the distribution of IPs on DHCP-servers and carried out first tests. Later on they set up a network plan, labeled all cables and wrote down the data in the preset protocol. They also carried out the routing and the device management. They also got to know other operation systems like Unix, Windows, Mac OS X and MS-DOS and determined all the differences and similarities of the systems as well as their advantages and disadvantages. During the introduction to the work under Linux the group learned the basics of Befehle/Commands as well as the software installation with Dash and Terminal. Also the basics of Shell and the management of user accounts was part of the seminar as well as the installation of Triple Boot Systems. When discussing the operation system MacOS X they got to know the basics of the administration of user accounts as well as the use and isntallation of apps and the Apple ID. During the seminar One afternoon during their stay the group went to visit the BMW Plant situated in Leipzig. The BMW Leipzig Plant is a traditional German vehicle manufactory with highest principles and standards. BMW cars are produced there since the year 2005 in a modern and sustainable way, introducing since then three new series of their automobiles. Covering a total area of 208 hectares, up to 700 vehicles are produced daily. At the moment, BMW 1 with 5 doors, BMW 1 Coupé, BMW 1 Cabrio and BMW X1. Until 2013, the company is going to start the production of a new environment-friendly models with electric drive BMW i3 und BMW i8 and create 800 new jobs in their plant. 5

6 During a guided tour through the factory, the students obtained an interesting insight into the production of automobiles, as they could watch each step of the manufacturing process. They also saw a few videos, on which the details of the production as well as the philosophy of the company were explained. During their visit, the group also experienced some interesting aspects of the architecture of the BMW Leipzig Plant. At the factory of BMW in Leipzig 6

The Program: On Monday, February 09 th, 2015 after the practical training, the group left Schkeuditz together with a member of the VITALIS team for a guided tour through the city of Leipzig, where they were shown some of the most interesting sights of the town. They started with the Leipzig Main Station which is one of the biggest terminal stations in Europe and also one of the biggest shopping centers with about 140 shops. In 1915 the main station in Leipzig was inaugurated after 13 years of construction. Afterwards, the participants visited St. Nikolai Church. Back in the fall of 1989, the church was the meeting point of the Monday demonstrations, which started the peaceful revolution and led to the final breakdown of the communist regime in the GDR (German Democratic Republic, otherwise known as the former East Germany). The Church St. Thomas and in front of the monument of Johann Sebastian Bach The participants continued their guided tour to the market place with the Old City Hall, the Mädler Passage with the famous restaurant Auerbach s Keller, an old student pub which opened in 1525 as a wine bar, and whose most renowned guest, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, was inspired to write a scene from his tragedy Faust, set at the restaurant. The group went on to see the St. Thomas Church, where the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach worked as the organist and choirmaster for 27 years, directing the Thomanerchor, which has been around since the 13th century and is one of the best choirs worldwide. The church also holds the remains of Bach. The trainees also went to the square Augustusplatz, where the Opera House and the Gewandhaus concert hall are located. Nearby they also had the chance to see the new main building of the University of Leipzig ( Alma Mater Lipsiensis ), Germany's second oldest university, which was founded in 1409 and celebrated its 600th anniversary in It was and is 7

8 a sought-after study destination and has been attracting internationally reputed scholars over the centuries, like the polymath Leibniz, Lessing, Goethe and Heisenberg. As a classical comprehensive university hosting approximately 30,000 students and about 100 study courses, the University of Leipzig covers the entire scope from natural sciences, law and medicine to diversified humanities courses. The market place and the square Augustusplatz with the Universität of Leipzig The totally renovated inner-city complex at the Augustusplatz (Augustus Square) is the central campus of the University of Leipzig. The new build Paulinum is reminiscent of the 1968 destroyed university church. This square is about m² wide and during the time of the GDR, its name was Karl-Marx-Platz, after the German philosopher, political journalist and critic of civil society and classical economics. The opera house building was replaced by the New Theater which was destroyed during the second-world war, after which the new opera house was erected. The university of Leipzig and the view from the Panorama Tower in Leipzig Next to the Uniriese is the Moritzbastei, a youth and student club extending down to three stories underground. This former fortification directly adjacent to the university is the only remaining part of medieval city defenses. Unused for many years, it was dug out by Leipzig University students in numerous voluntary actions between 1974 and 1976 and turned into a leisure facility. Today the club consists of several vaults and rooms 8

9 and offers a program ranging from concerts to exhibition openings. On the roof, in the summer, plays are performed, concerts held and films shown. After the interesting trip through Leipzig, the Polish group returned to Gut Wehlitz. On Saturday, February 14 th, 2015, the group left Schkeuditz to see the city of Berlin during a day trip. After a two-hour journey by train, they arrived at the Main Station, where they met their city guide, Mrs Kasia Schmid, and started their tour through the capital. The Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust monument in Berlin The students went to see the Reichstag building, the traditional seat of the German Parliament, the famous Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Monument, which commemorates the Jews murdered during the Second World War. They also saw the square Potsdamer Platz and the rests of the Berlin Wall. The cathedral and the Reichstag building in Berlin 9

10 The cathedral and the rests of the Berlin wall In the late Sunday afternoon, the students started their return back to Gut Wehlitz in Schkeuditz. On Saturday, February 15 th, 2015, a trip to Dresden was planned. After a 1,5-hour trip by train, the Polish group arrived at the main railway station in the capital of Saxony, where they were welcomed by their city guide, Mrs Martina Zellmer. Departing in the biggest promenade Prager Straße, along the rests of the old city wall, the first point of interest was the Altmarkt the square, where all events like the city festivals, open air concerts and mediaeval markets take place every year. They continued their walking tour to the St. Cross Church Kreuzkirche, which is the biggest church in Saxony, existing since the 12th century. The church Frauenkirche and the opera Afterwards the group visited one of the highlights of the city the famous St. Mary s Church Frauenkirche, which was reopened after 12 years of reconstruction in The Polish experts were informed about the history and got interesting details about the reconstruction. Other points of 10

11 interests were the Brühlsche Terrasse with the old fortification Dresden and the art academy with the Albertinum. One of the most important noble men in Saxon history was August II the Strong, the king of Latvia. Thus, they visited also the church Hofkirche and the palace Schlosspalast - the buildings, which were constructed for him. At the square Theaterplatz they could have a glance of the historical importance reflected in the wonderfully decorated opera Semperoper. During the trip in Dresden The participants visited also the palace complex Zwinger, where a lot of galleries and museums are open to the public. During the guided tour, the group was also informed about the political role of Dresden in the state of Saxony. They also got to know some interesting aspects of Dresden s role in the industrial development for example the first toothpaste in tubes, the filter cigarettes and the development of the famous Meissen porcelain. The old town and the Zwinger in Dresden On Friday, February 20 th, 2015 after the last day of the practical training, the program was evaluated by the participants and a member of the VITALIS team. 11

12 They exchanged their points of view regarding their practical training as well as the German work system. They also evaluated the organization of the whole program including getting to know the German culture and history thanks to numerous visits to German cities. The group further discussed future perspectives for the participants in the European Union. Afterwards, the participants received their certificates and the necessary documents related to the project. The next day the participants started their journey back to Poland. 12

13 4. Summary: Within the project, the participants gained practical knowledge about working in a different country and got used to various working habits. By using English and German as the means of communication during their practical training, they had the opportunity to improve their language skills and also their technical grammar. During their practical training in the field of IT networks, the Polish trainees could gather a lot of interesting and helpful information and improve their knowledge. The participants broadened their vocational skills and developed their interpersonal features and intercultural sensitivity. In addition to that, they learned about the German history and culture during the visit of Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig and its region. In conclusion, the trainees participation in the Lifelong Learning Program Erasmus+ was an important experience for their professional development. They had the possibility not only to meet other participants from different countries, such as Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Portugal and Romania, but also to get new impressions and experience from them. Their stay in Germany will contribute to their chances to benefit from the international possibilities created by the European Union. VITALIS is satisfied with all of the beneficiaries development. They were very motivated and interested in the project. The staff of the workshop at Gut Wehlitz was also satisfied with their professional development and their work, and enjoyed the exchange of experiences with the Polish trainees.
