The information has been collated and summarised from a wide range of sources including company websites, annual reports and industry publications. Due to the constantly changing nature of the industry, this document should be taken as a guide only. The information is accurate to the best of our knowledge and we welcome any comments or feedback. 3 Woolworths Limited Publicly listed Australian company that covers food & grocery, liquor, tobacco, petrol, general merchandise, hotels, and home improvement. In , Woolworths Limited operated 1,355 liquor outlets and group liquor sales (including ALH liquor sales) totalled $7.2 billion. 1 Woolworths Limited have 39.5% of the liquor retailing market share in Australia. 2 Financially contributes to DrinkWise. 3 Headquarters: Sydney, Australia. Cellarmasters Online liquor retailer Largest online wine retailer in Australia, accounting for up to 30% of direct wine sales ,000 online members. 4 Langton s Australia s leading online fine wine auction site. 5 Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH) 75% of ALH is owned by Woolworths. ALH Group have a portfolio of pubs, bars, night clubs and over 460 retail liquor stores across Australia (large liquor barns, drive through outlets and walk in bottle shops). 6 Bruce Mathieson Group (owned by Mathieson family) and Woolworths started a joint venture in Queensland called MGW Hotels in 2000 purchased 30 hotels in less than 4 years under the vehicle Bruandwo Pty Ltd. ALH was established as a business unit of Carlton & United Brewers in the mid-1990s; Fosters Group floated ALH in 2003 and in late 2004 Bruandwo took over and ALH was delisted. In 2005 Bruandwo changed its name to ALH and the operations of ALH, MGH Hotels and the hotel interests of the Mathieson family were merged into ALH Group. 6 In 2013, the ALH Group portfolio featured 326 hotels. 8 Dan Murphy s Dan Murphy s with large barn-like outlets is a national chain of destination liquor stores with a focus on wine, service and value. With the widest range of liquor available at very competitive prices, Dan Murphy s offers expert, friendly assistance and advice stores in Australia. 1 Operates an online store. Large, liquor barn format. e.g. Dan Murphy s West Gosford store in NSW is approximately 1,400m 2. 7 Nationally, 68 Dan Murphy s stores are located on or associated with ALH sites. 8 BWS BWS are local bottle shops that offer quick, simple and convenient shopping. Local BWS outlets may be walk-in, drive-through, stand alone or attached to an ALH hotel. 6 1,180 stores in Australia. 1 In 2013, Woolworths Liquor stores were rebranded to BWS. 9 Nationally, 458 BWS stores are located on or associated with ALH sites. 8 3

4 Wesfarmers Limited Publicly listed Australian company, with business operations covering supermarkets, liquor stores, tobacco sales, department stores, home improvement and office supplies, coal mining, energy, insurance, chemicals and fertilisers and industrial and safety products. 10 Wesfarmers Limited have 20% of the liquor retailing market share in Australia. 2 Headquarters: Perth, Australia. Coles The Coles division of Wesfarmers is a leading food, liquor and convenience retailer. National liquor retailer and hotel operator with over 800 stores and 90 hotels. 10 Coles liquor sales revenue in was estimated to be $3.44 billion. 2 Financially contributes to DrinkWise. 3 Liquorland Liquorland, owned by Coles Supermarket since 1981 is the convenient, quick and easy solution for those who want great every day value on liquor. 11 More than 630 Liquorland stores in Australia with 300 of them located next to a Coles Supermarket. 12 Trialling Liquorland Warehouse stores in 2013, a warehouse-style format to better compete against Dan Murphy s; first store in Sydney is two to three 13, 14 times larger than the usual Liquorland format. Operates an online store. Vintage Cellars Vintage Cellars is Australia s Fine Wine Specialist. ; stocks wine, champagne, spirits and beer. 15 Over 80 Vintage Cellars stores in Australia. 15 Operates an online store. First Choice Liquor First Choice Liquor has a huge range and some of the cheapest prices around. With the convenience of over 80 stores across Australia and the ability to buy online and have it delivered to your door, First Choice Liquor is a one stop shop for all your liquor needs. 16 Over 75 First Choice Liquor stores in Australia. 17 Liquor barn format. The size of each store (on average 1,000m 2 and the volume of liquor product purchased enables First Choice stores to offer a greater range and depth of stock holding than is currently found at Coles Liquor s other (Liquorland or Vintage Cellars) branded stores. It also enables First Choice to provide these products at competitive prices. 18 Operates an online store. 4

5 Metcash Australia s leading wholesale distribution and marketing company, operating in the grocery, liquor, automotive parts and hardware wholesale industries clients are independent retailers. 19 Has 3 divisions Metcash Food & Grocery, Australian Liquor Marketers, and Metcash Hardware & Automotive. Headquarters: Sydney, Australia. Australian Liquor Marketers (ALM) ALM is a broad range liquor wholesaler supplying over 15,000 hotels, liquor stores and restaurants throughout Australia. 19 In 2012, ALM announced it had signed a 15 year supply agreement with Liquor Marketing Group (page 6), covering supply distribution to 1,700 stores. 20 Provides logistics, buying, merchandising, marketing and retail support. 21 Sales of $2.9 billion for the year ended April Independent Brands Australia (IBA) ALM supports independent retail brands through IBA. 21 IBA is a Metcash subsidiary established in 2003 to create strong national brands and a suitable framework for independent liquor retailers to compete equally with the chains and secure long-term sustainability. 19 Offers marketing support and retail services. 21 Represents over 1,600 independent liquor retailers. 2 17% of liquor retailing market share. 2 Liquor Alliance ALM is a strategic partner with Liquor Alliance Liquor Alliance trades under the Thirsty Camel banner. 19 Thirsty Camel Bottleshops One of Thirsty Camel bottleshops core brand value is irreverence. 25 We re not your average bottleshop because lets face it, the bottleshop is probably your last stop before a good time so we like to have one too. 26 Over 450 Thirsty Camel bottle shops around Australia. 27 Cellarbrations One of the largest independent retail liquor brands in Australia. 22 Over 500 outlets operating in every state and territory in Australia, 22 including five larger format Cellarbrations Superstore outlets. 23 IGA Plus Liquor IGA Liquor maximises the successful IGA supermarket offer with a strong and consistent approach to retailing liquor. 19 Unable to find store numbers. 6 Liquor Marketing Group Company formed in 1977 to support independent retailers. 28 Operates Australia wide, with 1,700 stores trading under banners. 20 Headquarters: Sydney, Australia. Bottlemart and Bottlemart Express Bottlemart and Bottlemart Express are the trading names for a group of independently owned hotels and bottle shops which form part of the Liquor Marketing Group. Over 700 stores throughout Australia. 29 Down Under Cellars Banner group for independent stores focused on wine. 60 stores throughout WA, Queensland, NSW and Victoria. 30 Harry Brown Banner group for independent stores wanting a liquor barn format. Five outlets around Australia; 30 two in Brisbane and two in Ipswich, QLD, and one in Perth, WA. Liquor Legends Independently owned and managed outlets including drive-throughs, bottleshops and liquor barns. 31 Over 300 outlets across Queensland, NSW, ACT and Victoria. 31 Sip n Save South Australian banner group. 65 outlets across Adelaide and South Australia. 30 Urban Cellars Independently owned and managed outlets in Queensland and NSW. 32 Unable to find store numbers. 6

7 Hofer AG ALDI stores in Australia, UK, Europe and the US. Headquarters: Germany. ALDI Stores Supermarkets Wholly owned subsidiary of Hofer AG, based in Germany. Supermarkets sell wine, beer, spirits and RTD products; We ve teamed up with winemakers, brewers and leading brands from around the world so you re spoilt with increased convenience, a wider choice and hard to beat pricing. 33 Has over 300 stores operating in NSW, ACT, Queensland and Victoria; NSW stores, 94 Victoria stores and 8 ACT stores sell liquor. 35 Operate an online liquor store. 8 Independent Liquor Group Co-operative A member-owned co-operative organisation open to all licensed liquor outlets. Membership comprising hotels, bottle shops, clubs, bars and restaurants across NSW and Queensland. 36 In March 2012 announced it would be merging with Southern Independent Liquor to create ILG Australia; to be completed over 18 months. 37 ILG has over 1,200 shareholder members and supplies to over 1,500 outlets, with an annual turnover of $200 million. 36 Headquarters: NSW, Australia. Pubmart A banner group for hotels with bottle shops. Super Cellars Banner group established in January Little Bottler Established in January stores in NSW. Clubmart A banner group for large clubs that want group buying power. Liquor World A banner group for outlets that do not want advertising or promotional activity. The Liquor Co-op Outlets are able to maintain their independent identity if they wish. Southern Independent Liquor Independent liquor group based in Victoria. Headquarters: Melbourne, Australia. Duncan s Independent liquor banner group available to all independent hotel drive-in/walk-in bottle shops and free standing liquor stores. 38 Oz Liquor»» In 2012 Southern Independent Liquor announced a new banner group for Victoria, Oz Liquor. 39 8

9 Independent Liquor Retailers (ILR) ILR formed in 2002 to enhance the position of independent liquor retailers. 40 Membership base includes hotels, bottle shops, clubs, bars and supermarkets. 11 Costco Wholesale International Inc International chain of membership warehouses that carry brand name merchandise at substantially lower prices than are typically found at conventional wholesale or retail sources. 47 Products include groceries, appliances, automotive supplies, toys, hardware, sporting goods, jewellery, tobacco and office supplies. Open to members of Costco only, both business and individual members. Headquarters: Washington, USA. Costco Wholly run by US based Costco Wholesale International Inc. 3 locations in Australia Auburn, Melbourne and Canberra; new warehouse to open in Casula, Sydney in 2013 and another under construction in Melbourne. 48 Warehouses sell beer, wine and spirits. 12 There are many online liquor stores operating in Australia: due to the number of stores we are unable to list them all. Some operate exclusively as online stores, while others have physical premises also. Below are two examples of online liquor stores operating in Australia. Liquor Home Delivery Online home delivery store that delivers across Australia. Physical premise located in Dianella, WA but main focus is online. Headquarters: Perth, Australia.
