3 Welcome Studying at the university means embarking on a new relationship with knowledge. It means taking the time to understand phenomena in their multiple dimensions, to place them in perspective, work up their historic context, and explore them in all of their complexity. The university is a privileged site of reflexion, where intellectual creation is encouraged in the domains of both teaching and research. The University of Geneva, which in 2009 celebrated its 450th anniversary, is on the cutting edge of basic and experimental science, stays informed about the needs and challenges of the society, and provides a space for discovery in which the present is examined while the future is built. The UNIGE at a glance 15,500 students 5,200 employees 250 continuing education programmes 3,800 diplomas awarded 31 bachelor s degrees 79* master s degrees 78 doctoral degrees It is this feature in particular that makes itself felt virtually the moment new students begin their time at the University of Geneva, re-shaping their relationship with the expertise they are preparing to acquire, adding an intriguing dimension to their lives, and ensuring that their experience is enriching. One s university years are a rare and precious time, and afford a brand-new perspective on learning. The various faculties at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) offer just such an opportunity to broaden one s field of knowledge. We are delighted to see our students join us in this pursuit today and thus guarantee a fruitful tomorrow. Cultivating excellence Studying at the University of Geneva means benefiting from an infrastructure whose excellence is regularly confirmed. Rated among the best European universities in international rankings, the UNIGE, among whose professors is a winner of the Field Medal, the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in mathematics, offers a range of programmes unique in French-speaking Switzerland. Comprising eight faculties Science, Medicine, Arts, Social Science and Economics, Law, Theology, Psychology and Educational Sciences, Translation and Interpreting the UNIGE also boasts several interfaculty centres and offers a programme in Environmental Studies. The UNIGE hosts six national research centres. It shares with the Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) an Academy of Human Rights and participates actively in the establishment of a Swiss network of international studies in Geneva. * Depending on the particular specialty chosen in certain master s programmes 4 5

4 A unique setting Students in Geneva enjoy a unique setting. Rated third-highest in international surveys of quality of living*, the city of Calvin is only a few hours by train from the major European capitals. Enrolment Geneva is also host to the European headquarters of the United Nations (UN) and the world headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), as well as offices of such multinationals as Procter&Gamble, Merck-Serono and Firmenich. Its population is accordingly multicultural, and its public life is distinguished by open-mindedness and tolerance. Furthermore, thanks to its prime geographic location on the shores of Lake Geneva and less than an hour from Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps the city enjoys an abundance of parkland and offers a wide range of leisure activities. Geneva is also home to a wealth of cultural institutions, such as the Grand Théâtre, an internationally acclaimed opera house, and many musical, cinematic and artistic venues. Enrolling at the University of Geneva Enrolment at the University of Geneva requires a secondary-school diploma, a Swiss schoolleaving certificate, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent. The complete list of conditions and procedures for enrolment may be found at: Holders of foreign degrees pay an enrolment fee of CHF 65. 11 Faculty of Medicine From DNA to bedside manner Committed to the continuous adaptation of its teaching curriculum to developments in biomedicine as well as to the needs of an evolving society, the Faculty of medicine plays a leading role today in the development of medical education in Switzerland. It was the first of its kind in Switzerland to provide a new-problem-based method of medical learning and to be officially accredited by the Organisation of Quality Accreditation (OAQ). The medical faculty of Geneva works in close collaboration with the Geneva University Hospitals in order to develop the practice of clinical medicine. It hosts the only School of dental medicine in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. While the quality of its research is today widely recognized, the Faculty of medicine of the University of Geneva has promoted the development of numerous fields including diabetes, infectious diseases, genetics, neurosciences and transplants as well as primary care medicine. Apart from undergraduate training in Medicine the Faculty of Medicine also proposes several master programmes in other fields related to medical and life sciences.
