6 Currently capped at 9,000 per year. Universities/colleges need to have approved OFFA access agreement* if charging fees over 6,000 The tuition fee will be decided by the university or college including if it charges different amounts for different courses The average tuition fee for new students in 2012 was around 8,389 Students at private universities or colleges offering courses designated by BIS will be able to borrow up to 6,000* towards tuition costs *Students will have to self-fund any additional fee charged *

7 Eligible students will not have to pay up front for their tuition fees The non-means tested Tuition Fee Loan (not dependant on household income) is available to cover the fee levels set by the HEI The Student Loans Company will pay the Tuition Fee Loan directly to the university or college in instalments across the academic year Not compulsory, Students can also*: Pay full fees up front to the university/college, or Pay part of the fees and take a Tuition Fee Loan for the rest * To be agreed with the institution

Interest on the loan will be charged from the day payment is made to the university/college, not from the liability date

9 Proposed policy changes for students starting their courses on or after 1 st September 2012: Students on sandwich placements will be charged 20% of the maximum full-time tuition charge Maximum charge of 1,800 (Half rate fee cap will no longer apply) Students on Erasmus placements will be charged 15% of the maximum full-time tuition charge Maximum charge of 1,350 (Reciprocal fee waiver will no longer apply) Students on overseas placements will be charged 15% of the maximum full time tuition charge Maximum charge of 1,350 (Half rate fee cap will no longer apply)

11 New part-time students can apply for a non means tested Tuition Fee Loan which replaces the means tested Fee and Course Grants The maximum universities or colleges can charge for part-time courses is currently 6,750 a year Students starting designated P/T courses provided wholly by a private university or college can apply for up to 4,500 in Tuition Fee Loan The amount charged will depend on their course intensity (Minimum 25% Maximum 75%) Students must complete their course in no more than 16 years

12 Part-time students will not be entitled to a loan or grant towards living costs but can access Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) Part-time students should research bursaries/scholarships offered by universities and colleges Continuing students whose course began before September 2012 can still apply for a means tested fee and course grant Part-time study & benefits Part-time students can usually still claim benefits that depend on household income (means-tested benefits) such as; Income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Housing and Council Tax Benefit if unemployed! Students should contact their local Jobcentre Plus for on going benefit eligibility assessment

14 Maintenance support is available to help with living costs Two types of support are available, Maintenance Loan and Maintenance Grant The Maintenance Loan is repayable and all eligible students are entitled to get some funding Maintenance support is paid directly into a students bank account each term For academic year 2014/2015, maximum Maintenance support levels will be increased by 1%* *Pending final policy approval

17 The Maintenance Grant doesn t have to be repaid How much grant a student can receive depends on household income levels (100% means tested) Household income thresholds for 2014/2015: Students from households with income of up to 25,000 can get the maximum grant of 3,387* Students from households with incomes of up to 42,620 can get a partial grant *Pending final policy approval

20 Bursaries: Could be available through the National Scholarship Programme Linked to personal circumstance and often, income level Vary by university or college Scholarships: Can be linked to academic results or ability in sport, music etc.. Subject specific or generic Limited in numbers! Students should check university websites and ask at open days for information on bursaries and scholarships what is available and how/when to apply

22 Extra money or support may be available to students if they; Have children or adults dependent on them Have a disability, long-term health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty Studying an NHS or Social Work course NHS courses include; Nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, chiropody, dietetics, radiography, occupational therapy, the later stages of medicine and dentistry! 23 Help towards the additional costs a student may face as a result of their disability, long-tern health condition, mental-health condition or specific learning difficulty In addition to the standard student finance package, Does not have to be repaid, Is not affected by the household income, Looks at the specific needs of the individual in relation to their circumstances and studies! Students need to be aware the DSA application process can take up to 14 weeks!

25 Childcare Grant Based on 85% of actual registered/approved childcare costs up to maximum of: per week for one child per week for two or more children Parents Learning Allowance Help with course-related costs for students with dependent children. Amount received will be between 50 and 1,523 Adult Dependants Grant Normally for the student s partner. Can be for another adult who is financially dependent on the student where the adult s net income is not more than 3,796 p.a. Maximum grant available: 2,668! Dependants grants are income related. Universities may offer additional support to students with childcare/caring responsibilities

27 Graduates wont make repayment contributions until their income is over 21,000 a year ( 1,750 pm) gross On entering repayment, this threshold will rise annually in line with average earnings increase Full time students will begin to repay in the April after graduating from/leaving their HE course (from April 2016 at the earliest) Part time students enter repayment in the April 4 years after they started their course, or the April after they leave their course (Whichever is sooner) 12_13 Repayments will be a basic 9% of income earned over 21,000 If income falls to 21,000 or below repayments will stop

29 The interest rate attached to a students loan will vary, based on circumstance and income: During study until entering repayment Income: Below 21,000 Income: 21,000 to 41,000 Income: Above 41,000 Interest rate is: Retail Price Index (RPI) +3% Interest rate is: Set at RPI Only Interest rate is: RPI plus up to 3% Interest rate is: Retail Price Index (RPI) +3%! Students can make (penalty free) voluntary repayments at any time

32 Students should apply as soon as possible to ensure payments can be made at start of the academic year Applying online through GOV.UK is the quickest and easiest method for most students and their parents/sponsors Only supply additional evidence to support an application if we ask for it Student identity is checked using valid UK passport details Household income is verified through submitted National Insurance Numbers via link with HMRC (Successful on 75% of 12/13 applications) 12_13 Students will be assessed for non means tested support if there are any delays in receiving household income information

44 Tuition fee support is available to all eligible students and repayments are linked to a students future income, not what they borrow Research all finance available especially bursaries & scholarships Apply on-line & on time no need to wait for a confirmed place A student loan won t be recorded on a credit file so is unlikely to impact the ability to access future loans, credit or mortgages 12_13 Ensure all details are correct before submitting an application and let us know of any changes as soon as possible
