3 Message From the Dean Summer is here, and while it is a great time to relax and enjoy the sunshine, it is also the perfect time to focus on advancing your career or exploring interests. We invite you to make CSUSM Extended Learning one of your summer destinations and discover the diverse array of summer programs and courses available to you. Whether you are a professional looking to find your edge in the job market or simply a lover of learning, each of our educational opportunities is geared to help you achieve your personal and professional goals. We even have a large number of online program offerings, allowing you to learn while sitting in the sun. For teachers, summer break is an ideal time to prepare for the next academic year. In collaboration with the College Board, we are once again hosting the Advanced Placement Summer Institute. I am looking forward to seeing high school teachers come from around the nation to receive the subject-specific support and training they need to teach Advanced Placement courses. Our CSUSM faculty are also very excited to welcome our AP Institute students, and thus we have carved out time for meeting with faculty members to discuss content, pedagogy and student achievement. Summer at Extended Learning also presents an excellent opportunity for unemployed or underemployed individuals to receive cost-free training in the exciting field of biotechnology. In partnership with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, and with grant funding from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), 40 qualified individuals will be offered admission to our new Biotechnology Laboratory Technician Certificate program, which will prepare them for current and emerging jobs in the biotechnology industry as either lab technicians or research assistants. With the first cohort set to launch in April and another beginning in July, I encourage all of you who have a background in science and an interest in a biotechnology career to contact your nearest One Stop Career Center ( to see if you qualify for funding. As you bask in the summer sun, I hope you also will join likeminded people and bask in the sheer joy of learning from recognized professionals and practitioners who will surely make Extended Learning the place to be this summer! Although Kody spends his days immersed in antibody production research, he knows that to get ahead in his field he will need a more well-rounded industry perspective. When looking for a program in San Diego, Kody decided that one of the key factors would need to be the incorporation of not just lab and research skills, but also courses in broader business practices. This is one of elements offered by the Master of Biotech at CSUSM that drew Kody to the program. I really wanted a program that included a business view of the biotech industry and next year s marketing and business courses look to be applicable to my current work. He adds, Since I mostly have lab skills, the communication class I have already taken will be very good for this industry. Kody is also enjoying the cohort model of the program. Since most of the students work in the biotech industry, Kody acknowledges, I am making great connections the connections that I make with faculty and students will hopefully help me move up and network. Even though he is only in his second semester with the program, he is pleased with the direction that the program is taking him. When asked if he would recommend the program to anyone, Kody smiled and answered, Definitely.
