1 Professionalism and Social Media Speaker Information: Julie Walsh - Covarrubias, MEd, EdD Associate Professor Unviersity of Alabama - Birmingham th Street S Women and Infants Center, RM 5330 Department of Ob-Gyn Birmingham, AL jwalsh@uab.edu Disclosure Statement: I have no industry relationships to disclose. Learning Objectives: By the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: define social media and describe the various types identify the different uses for social media describe inappropriate uses of social media apply best practices when using social media Precis of Presentation: Social networks, just as with other forms of communication, must be used responsibly to protect both you and the reputation of your employer. In this session we will discuss best practices about engaging with social media.

2 Professionalism and Social Media Top Social Networks: YouTube: video-sharing website Flickr: photography-sharing website MySpace: typically for performing artists or the younger generation (similar to Facebook) Facebook: general population, connecting with past and present friends ; share stories, video, and other files with friends Twitter: short text messages telling what you are doing or thinking LinkedIn: connects business professionals to exchange knowledge, ideas, and opportunities The rapid growth of online social media, such as networking sites like Facebook and Twitter or media-sharing sites like YouTube and Flickr, is changing the way individuals communicate, share ideas, and disseminate information. This world of connectivity offers unique opportunities for people to interact, but unfortunately is also rapidly blurring the lines between professional and private lives. This mode of communication presents many challenges and can pose a danger to individuals privacy, safety, and professional reputations if proper precautions are not taken. A mere single act can create far-reaching ethical consequences for individuals as well as organizations. According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project 1, close to half (44%) of employed internet users now say that details about whom they work for are posted online, up from 35% in A reported 53% of employed internet users with a college degree say that information about whom they work for is available online for others to see compared with 36% of those with a high school degree. While basic pieces of contact information like a home address and telephone number were among the top items reported to be available online in our 2006 survey, they are now surpassed by employer information. Despite the stream of stories documenting commercial and government breaches, employers Googling job candidates, and celebrities committing Twitter faux pas, adult internet users have actually become less likely to express concern about the size of their digital footprints. In fact, the amount of worry from Internet users regarding how much information is available about them online is down from 40% in December 2006 to 33% currently.

3 It s these types of findings that have employers concerned about reputation management of not only the employee, as a direct representative of the office, but also to the workplace (e.g., business, institution, hospital). However, in a recent study of all 132 accredited U.S. medical schools, the investigators found that while social media use is rising, policy informing appropriate conduct in medical schools lags behind. It was revealed that only 13 of 128 schools (10.6%) had guidelines/policies explicitly mentioning social media with 38.6% of these guidelines including statements that defined what is forbidden, inappropriate, or impermissible under any circumstances. 2 In the 2010 Pew Report, 27% of employed internet users reported working for an employer that has policies regarding how they should present themselves only, which is up from 22% in A clear social media policy is the most effective way to resolve conflict before it ever beings. However, until policy that specifically guides social media use becomes more prevalent, it is the professional responsibility of employees to do what they can to minimize potential reputation damage for the institution. Fortunately, protecting your professional and personal online reputation is not that difficult. It can be achieved through some initiative, caution, and thoughtfulness as one engages in social networking. 3 Resources: Privacy Settings for Popular Social Networking Sites 3 Facebook 10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know o How to protect your privacy o Who can see my profile content o Flickr MySpace y_settings
