2 In the one-year Master s programme in Culture, Organization and Management (COM), students deepen their knowledge and develop their skills to research, describe and explain the cultural dimension of management within organizations. The two central themes Intercultural Management and Culture Change, closely linked to the three main research streams Transnational Entrepreneurship, Organizational Culture and Change and Identity and Diversity in Organizations, are studied with the help of qualitative research methods that originate in Ethnography. Besides doing research in the Netherlands COM students are encouraged to explore other world regions, such as countries in southeast Asia, southern Africa and the Caribbean. 5 and intervention with acquired knowledge on organisation. - Being able to develop a plan for the analysis of a concrete problem of cultural change and formulate proposals for intervention. Course content The seminar culture change and intervention discusses recent academic theories and change prescriptions. The focus is on traditions of 'planned change' as well as on process oriented concepts and methodologies of organizational development. During the seminar themes, such as participative change, group dynamics and decline management are discussed. The intervention part focuses on dominant cultural strategies as aggressive, corrosive, indoctrinative and conciliative (Bate, 2002) and negotiation strategies that deals with power arena, actors, and the results of cultural change. The seminar reflects on intervention strategies and their consequences for management, efficiency and effectiveness of (inter)national organisational networks. Form of tuition Lectures and discussion groups (50%- 50%). Weekly lectures discuss most important strategies of organizational change and intervention. Students will prepare and discuss three assignments. Furthermore, a culture intervention simulation programme will be used. Type of assessment Testamur based upon the assignments and a final exam. Students have to hand in all assignments and have to participate the intervention simulation programme before permitted for the final exam. The mark for the final exam determines the final mark. Course reading * Reader Cultural change and Intervention. * Additional literature will be announced. Entry requirements Students have to know theories discussed in organisational change and transnational organisations. Target group Master students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to; sign up; for a course, for more information on dates to sign up; go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Fieldwork Preparation Course code SFWPREP_O (703711) Period Semester 1 Credits 15.0 Language of tuition English Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group Course objective Advanced study of methods for doing fieldwork. The course consists of three parts: 1 Advanced Ethnography Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen - M Culture, Organization and Management Pagina 2 van 8

6 2 Thematic Reading 3 Research Proposal Course content 1. Advanced Ethnography. The course starts with intensive address of ethnographic, and other interpretative methods for doing research in (and between) organizations. Special attention will be given to the methodological perspectives informing the various approaches. Apart from thorough theoretical preparation, the course involves training: observation and interviewing, with special attention for the role and function of discourse/s. Discussion and debate are important in our understanding of teaching. Therefore, the interfaces of theoretical insights and application of methods emerge via discussion over questions like: the art of observation; the importance of reflexivity; the role of the researcher and his/her limits; aspects of anonymization; options for gathering data (written, pictured, filmed); validity, objectivity, and temporal and spatial dimensions in ethnographic research. 2. Thematic Reading (November January; thesis groups) students read two books / several articles (500+ pages) chosen after consultation with the thesis group supervisor about the research topic / research area. The literature contributes to a deeper and/or a broader (contextual) understanding of the research field / field of interest. 3. Research Proposal (November January; thesis groups) students write a research proposal, guided by the thesis group supervisor/s. the proposal needs to be marked / approved by the supervisor before a student can start his / her field research. Form of tuition Tutorial and individual supervision: Advanced ethnography: tutorial, i.e. lectures, exercises also outside class hours discussions, work groups; Thematic Reading and Research Proposal: individual tuition, in thesis groups, or individually (depending on theme, topic and availability of supervisors). Type of assessment Evaluation / testamur based on assignments and paper for Advanced Ethnography (1/3 of course grade), written or oral examination for Thematic Reading (1/3) and supervisors marking of Research Proposal (1/3). Course reading Several chapters from Organizational Ethnography (2009), Edited by Sierk Ybema, Dvora Yanow, Harry Wels & Frans Kamsteeg + additional chapters and articles to be announced via BlackBoard before course begin. Thematic Reading and Research Proposal: literature according to agreement between supervisor and students in thesis group. Entry requirements Through knowledge of (qualitative) methods of research and the capacity critically to use other methods of research is a requirement to enjoy and benefit from the course. 7 Target group Master students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to sign up for a course, for more information on dates to sign up, go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Identity and Diversity in Organizations COM Research Domain Course code SIDO-CRD_O (703714) Period Semester 1 Credits 15.0 Language of tuition English Coordinator prof. dr. H. Ghorashi Teaching staff dr. M.J. Spierenburg, prof. dr. H. Ghorashi Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group Course objective The goal of this course is to provide students with the analytical instruments to analyze and asses 'what is going on' in organizational settings. Identity and diversity, as reflections of societal developments, are at work, be it in preventing people from full participation or enabling them to unfold their full potential. Themes addressed are: what is influencing current organizational life from 'society'? What is happening on the individual level? What is the benefit of recurrent change? And what are the downsides of ongoing managerial performance? Why are some (groups of) people more successful than others? What would happen if organizational culture were less monolithic? The aim of the seminar is thus, to increase the reflective capacity of students in grasping their own positioning in the era of what Bauman (200) refers to as 'late modern condition', next to the consequences of this positioning for the processes of inclusion and exclusion inside and outside organizations Course content The course provides insights and overviews, detailed and wide perspectives on the broad theme of diversity in organizations contextualized by globalization, an ongoing urge for change and loss of reliance in current 'postmodern' society. Last year, students reported that 'this course unexpectedly linked issues of globalization with the personal level'. Ethnicity, gender, physical condition and age are explicit categories by which people can be excluded. Background, class, and education play a role in a more implicit sense. Over all, the mechanisms by which in/equality pertains are often hard to detect, despite of the advantages in a moral or an economical sense. We give an overview of the theoretical perspectives that have led to what we now call 'management of diversity'. Core concepts are: diversity, identity, gender, embedded and embodied organizational structures and patterns of (global and individual) power. Form of tuition Practical. Course reading * Zygmunt Bauman (2000) Liquid Modernity. Cambridge: Polity Press. * Pushkala Prasad, Albert J. Mills, Micheal Elmes, Anshuman Prasad (1997) Managing the Organizational Melting Pot: Dilemmas of Workplace Diversity. Thousand Oaks: Sage Publications. * Further reading will be announced shortly before the course starts. Entry requirements Acceptance to the international Master's programme in COM. Target group Master students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to; sign up; for a course, for more information on dates to sign up; go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Remarks * This course is one of the three streams; of COM Research Domains. * Presence in discussion groups is obligatory. Master's Thesis in Culture, Organization and Management Course code SMTCOM_O (703712) Period Semester 2 Credits 30.0 Language of tuition English Coordinator W. Kuipers Course objective By writing their Master's Thesis students demonstrate their ability to undertake independent academic research. In the thesis, the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as the empirical data from the field research are implemented. Course content The Master's thesis is the final subject of the Master COM, combining the fieldwork period and the writing of the actual thesis. The thesis is assessed with respect to the following: use of academic writing conventions, problematization, critical use of theory, data and methods, quality of analyses, and reflection on an academically and socially actual and relevant debate. The criteria for assessment are explained in the Graduation Manual COM, in which the assessment form has also been included. The manual can also be found on the web page of this course: Form of tuition Individual or group supervision; students can join a thematic thesis group or in some cases opt for individual supervision, depending on the topic. 9 Type of assessment Testamur based on the thesis. Course reading To be selected in consultation with the supervisor. Entry requirements Only students admitted to the Master's programme COM can take part in assessment. The course in Fieldwork Preparation must have been successfully passed. Target group Master students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to sign up for the course, for more information on dates to sign up, go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules. Remarks Please note: this course is not taught during the academisch year Only a clean sweep test is provided. Transnational Entrepreneurship COM Research Domain Course code STE-CRD_O (703715) Period Semester 1 Credits 15.0 Language of tuition English Coordinator dr. J.B.M. Koning Teaching staff dr. J.B.M. Koning Teaching method(s) Lecture, Study Group Course objective The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and understanding of public and scientific debates addressing processes of globalization and transnationalization in general and of entrepreneurship and organizations in particular. The prevailing debates will be differentiated according to the domains of theoretical and conceptual frameworks, economic developments, political processes, social issues, cultural change and ethical dilemmas as well as the empirical manifestation thereof in organizations and enterprises in western and non- western contexts. The students will critically review the literature, apply theoretical knowledge during panels and seminars, and use the newly acquired understandings for the written exam and the writing of a course paper. Course content Part I (week 1-7) This first part is a conceptual, theoretical and methodological exploration of processes of globalization and transnationalization on the one hand and entrepreneurship on the other. In Western management literature it is assumed that processes of globalization generate ever-larger organizations stretching across national borders and showing high levels of integration according to Western models of the Transnational Corporation (TNC). Economies of scale, the decline of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen - M Culture, Organization and Management Pagina 6 van 8

10 nation state as provider of both legal protection and national identity, the emergence of a homogeneous culture worldwide and the triumph of neo-liberal thinking seem to be the achievement of globalization. However, recent literature on globalization and transnationalization challenge this point of view. Coalitions and cooperative efforts in cross-border business ventures generate network(ed) organizations featuring large and small enterprises, regionally and locally embedded enterprises and organizational networks, a larger diversity in (organizational) cultures and identities, and increasing interest in social entrepreneurship. Meanwhile some scholars argue that we are in the middle of a so-called 'entrepreneurial revolution'. The scale and pace of change under globalizing processes seem in particular lucrative for the more flexible smaller firms while at the same time instigating all kinds of new entrepreneurial endeavors. This raises the question how we should understand these phenomena, what they denote and how we can study them. In order to do so we shall explore conceptual and theoretical debates across disciplines on entrepreneurship, entrepreneurs, and small firms. The central issue to be addressed is what (overt and hidden) principles and processes characterize entrepreneurship and organizational cooperation in transnational arenas. Part II (week 10-16) In this second part we zoom in on a number of concrete cases in order to explore how entrepreneurs and managers meet the challenge of transnationalization: who cooperates with whom and under what conditions? The focus will shift to "sub-fields" in organization- and entrepreneurship investigating ethnic, diasporic, religious and female entrepreneurship, family firms, corporate citizenship, entrepreneurial communities, etc. The empirical manifestations are debated in the form of panel discussions featuring guests with practical experiences as managers and entrepreneurs in the transnational arena. Form of tuition Lectures and seminars. Type of assessment Testamur based on: - Written examination (week 9) = 50% - Individual work during second part = 50% Course reading Part I: - Textbooks (to be announced). Part II: - A list with e-journals is made available before the start of the cours Target group Master students. Registration procedure It is obligatory to; sign up; for a course, for more information on dates to sign up; go to www. fsw. vu. nl/schedules.
