OUTCOMES 1. specify electrical heating systems; 2. select luminaires for interior industrial and commercial lighting installations; 3. explain the operation and application of standby, emergency and uninterruptable power supplies for commercial and industrial installations. 4. explain the operation of ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings. CREDIT VALUE: 1 HN Credit ACCESS STATEMENT: Access to this unit is at the discretion of the centre. However it would be beneficial if the candidate had prior knowledge of single phase and three phase a.c. circuits. This may be evidenced by possession of HN Unit: Single Phase A.C. Networks Three Phase Systems or similar qualifications or experience

3 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION STATEMENT OF STANDARDS UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: UTILISATION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY Acceptable performance in this unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. OUTCOME 1. SPECIFY ELECTRICAL HEATING SYSTEMS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) A range of typical direct and indirect electrical space heating appliances used in industrial and commercial installation are clearly described. (b) Space heating appliances selected from manufacturer s catalogues are correct in terms of power rating and suitability for a given installation. RANGE STATEMENT Industrial and commercial heating appliances: convectors radiators; off-peak; underfloor; air duct heating; industrial unit heaters. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Written or oral evidence is required to show that the candidate can indicate an understanding of the advantages and limitations of the given list of heating appliances and their utilisation in commercial or industrial installations as stated in pc(a). Written evidence is required to show that the candidate can interpret data in tables and perform calculation in order to select appropriate heating appliances for a given industrial or commercial situation, as described in pc(b). 3

4 OUTCOME 2. SELECT LUMINAIRES FOR INTERIOR INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL LIGHTING INSTALLATIONS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) Description of characteristics and uses of luminaires are clear and comprehensive. Production of an interior lighting scheme to a given specification in accordance with current industrial practice is correct. RANGE STATEMENT Luminaires: tungsten; halogen; fluorescent; mercury vapour; sodium types. Lighting scheme; inverse square law; consine law; lumon formula; use of CIBSE data, manufacturer s catalogues. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Written or oral evidence of the candidate s ability to demonstrate knowledge of the types of lamps and understanding of their uses for typical industrial or commercial installations, as stated in pc(a). Written evidence is required to demonstrate the methods of calculation of lighting requirements for a specific situation as required by pc(b). OUTCOME 3. EXPLAIN THE OPERATION AND APPLICATION OF STANDBY, EMERGENCY AND UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLIES FOR COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL INSTALLATIONS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) Justification of the provision of backup sources of electrical supply is clear in terms of current legislation. Descriptions of commonly used standby and emergency source of electrical supply are clear. Description of the arrangements and operation of Uninterruptable Power Supplies is clear. RANGE STATEMENT Types: engine driven generators; stored energy systems; uninterruptible power supplies. 4

5 EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Written/graphical and oral evidence is required to show that the candidate can demonstrate a knowledge of: OUTCOME the need for backup electrical supplies; standby generator arrangements and stored energy systems; and uninterruptible power supplies, as specified in pcs (a) to (c). 4. EXPLAIN THE OPERATION OF VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS IN BUILDINGS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) Descriptions of ventilation and air conditioning systems are comprehensive and clear. (b) A psychometric chart to determine comfort levels for given conditions is used correctly. RANGE STATEMENT The range statement for this outcome is fully expressed within the Performance Criteria. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Written, graphical and/or oral evidence of the candidate s ability to explain the features of ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings as detailed in PC(a). A written report describing the need for, and operation of, a ventilation system and an air conditioning system should be prepared to meet this requirement of pc(a). Written evidence in the form of one calculation to determine comfort levels using a psychometric chart should be prepared as evidence for pc(b). MERIT To gain a pass in this unit, a candidate must meet the standards set out in the outcomes, performance criteria, range statements and evidence requirements. To achieve a merit in this unit, a candidate must demonstrate a superior or more sophisticated level of performance. This may be demonstrated by: (i) (ii) (iii) a more in-depth explanation of theories; the ability to make independent judgements about problems; presenting a higher standard of report in assignments. 5

6 ASSESSMENT In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified. Details of these requirements are given for each outcome. The assessment instruments used should follow the general guidance offered by the SQA assessment model and an integrative approach to assessment is encouraged. (See references at the end of support notes). Accurate records should be made of the assessment instruments used showing how evidence is generated for each outcome and giving marking schemes and/or checklists, etc. Records of candidates achievements should be kept. These records will be available for external verification. SPECIAL NEEDS Proposals to modify outcomes, range statements or agreed assessment arrangements should be discussed in the first place with the external verifier. 7 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: UTILISATION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 40 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. PURPOSE This unit is a core unit which provides the underpinning knowledge to identify the types of services required for building services, and to provide the fundamental knowledge to study additional HN Units in the Design of Electrical Installation Services. CONTENT/CONTEXT Corresponding to outcomes 1-4: Outcome 1 This outcome provides candidates with the knowledge to select an appropriate heating appliance for a typical industrial or commercial requirement. The type of requirements can be wide ranging including offices, small factory units, leisure facilities, shops, schools and further education premises. Consideration is required of the type of building materials, transmission coefficients, number of air changes required area of windows, doors and walls, internal temperature required. Outcome 2 This outcome provides candidates with a knowledge of the features and characteristics of a range of modern luminaries and enables the candidates to select the most suitable luminaire for a given installation. Installations can include retail outlets, eg. supermarkets; leisure facilities, eg swimming pools; educational buildings; small factory units; commercial premises eg. office suites and other appropriate locations. The use of tables and data from the CIBSE code and from manufacturer s lighting catalogues is required. 7

8 Outcome 3 This outcome should provide knowledge on the operation and application of power supplies for commercial and industrial buildings. This can include types of engine driven generators, stored energy systems and uninterruptible power supplies. Outcome 4 This outcome should provide an understanding of ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings. This can include a block diagram treatment of systems, basic principles, heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification, the use of psychometric charts and comfort level. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Centres may use the Instruments of Assessment which are considered to be the most appropriate. Examples of instruments which could be used are as follows: Outcome 1 It is recommended that an assignment be used to enable the candidates to use a method of calculating the power rating of a heater(s) for a given situation. The advantages and limitations of various heating systems to meet the given need should be explained. Outcome 2 It is recommended that an assignment be used to meet the performance criteria in which the candidate designs a lighting scheme and describes the characteristics and uses of various limitations employed. The candidate should select appropriate luminaries from manufacturer s catalogues. Outcome 3 Three extended response questions in which the candidate: (a) (b) (c) justifies the need for back-up electrical supplies; describes the use of standby generator arrangements; describes the operation and use of Uninteruptable Power Supplies. Outcome 4 (a) (b) Extended response question describing the need for and operations of a ventilation and air conditioning system. One short answer in which the candidate uses a psychrometric chart to calculate comfort level. 8
