2 Department Information Welcome to the Department of Economics! Department advisors are your resource for any questions regarding your Economics, Management Science and Joint Math-Economics major requirements. As your major department, you should always contact us for questions concerning your major requirements. Questions might include: major requirements for any of the three economics majors, adding a second major, course prerequisites, course planning, honors programs, independent research, etc. Thus, if you have questions about economics, feel free to come in during our walk-in advising hours which are: Mondays / Thursdays/Fridays 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays / Wednesdays 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Weeks 1 & 2 of Quarter 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Please note the office is closed daily from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Have a quick question, but don t have time to come in for advising? 5 ASSIST Check Assist to verify course equivalency See how your community college courses transfer If you took a course that does not appear on Assist and you think it is equivalent, you must file a petition with the department that oversees that course

6 DARS Audit The Degree Audit checks your progress for degree. Note: is not an official record and is intended to serve as reference point for students. Blue denotes completed requirements (T-indicates transfer course). Red indicates missing/incomplete requirements. To see what you re still missing, you can run a long form. Courses that appear on the far right-hand side under additional lower division courses are transfer courses not applying to degree requirements.

7 Undergraduate Student Petition If you need to file an Undergraduate Student Petition, complete the form and attach a course syllabus that includes: Course description Textbook information Topics/content covered in lecture Include any coursework/notes you have from the course

8 Prerequisites Prerequisites are enforced in all economics courses. Please check the UCSD General Catalog for prerequisite information. Any changes to the catalog will appear on our website at: /ugradcourses/descriptions.php

9 UCSD General Catalog The General Catalog is the official resource to verify policies and your college and major requirements: Course descriptions are in the catalog; use it to learn about courses and to choose your electives. Refer to the catalog throughout your tenure at UCSD. This is your catalog year and it will not change even if you change your major.

10 Course Offerings Course Offerings radcourses/courseofferings.php To get specific information on faculty and days and times courses will be offered, visit the Schedule of Classes on TritonLink. The posted schedule on our website is tentative and subject to change. Note: most core courses are offered every quarter.

11 Schedule of Classes-By Subject The online schedule allows you to search for courses by: Subject Department Course Number (code) Professor or Course Title It also allows you to sort by: Day of the week Time of lecture Upper/Lower division only Classes with open seats

12 Reading the Schedule of Classes Many UCSD courses have multiple sections and lecture times. You need to only attend and enroll in one of the listed Lecture (LE) and Discussion (DI) times. Final Exam (FI) times are listed to avoid scheduling conflicts. Prerequisites can be checked on the Schedule of Classes by clicking on the link to the right of the course name.

13 Your Course Plan Tools Your weekly planner shows you when your courses are scheduled. If an item appears in red, it means your courses conflict. Note: the system allows you to enroll in courses/discussions sections that overlap You can also use this tool to self enter items, such as your work schedule.

14 Your Final Exam Planner Once you register, your final schedule for the quarter also becomes available. Finals could be scheduled back-to-backto-back. When you enroll you also choose your final exam schedule it cannot be changed.

15 How many courses should be taken your first quarter? It is recommended that you take three courses your first quarter. 2 major courses 1 non-major course Our hope is that with this course load, you will use your first quarter to acclimate to UCSD and the fast-paced quarter system. Our Two Year Plans for Economics and Management Science recommend two core courses in the first quarter. Due to the Math Department s course schedule, the two year plan for the Joint- Math Economics major lists three major courses in the first quarter. The three courses would be required to finish the major in two years.

16 Waitlists If you want to add a class that is full, you can use WebReg to waitlist the course. Waitlists are automated and used by ALL departments. They run nightly until midnight on Thursday of second week. The waitlist sequence is first-come, first-served. Departments cannot override the waitlist sequence. You will receive an to your UCSD account if you have been added to the course. If you have not met the prerequisite, WebReg will drop you from the waitlist. Before the quarter begins, you maybe enrolled in and wait-listed for a total of 19.5 units. After the quarter begins, you maybe enrolled in and wait-listed for a total of 22 units.

17 Frequently Asked Questions Which UCSD college should I be in for my major? We have majors from all colleges. There is no best college for Economics students. Will my Advanced Placement (AP) exams satisfy any of my major requirements? Students entering UCSD with an AP exam score of 5 may earn credit for Econ 1 or 3 (or both). Note: AP scores must be sent directly to the UCSD Office of Admissions; your community college transcripts will not show AP credit. Check with the math department regarding AP calculus credit. Can I graduate in two years? Yes. Students who transfer in with adequate math and economics courses can plan on a two year track to graduation. It is recommended that students meet with a major advisor each year to ensure you are on track for graduation. Can I minor in Accounting? Yes. Please contact the Rady School of Management for more information regarding the Minor in Accounting. It is open to all majors.

18 Frequently Asked Questions What grades are acceptable for the major? You MUST receive a C- or better in all courses applying to the major; courses MUST be taken for a letter grade. This also applies to transferred courses. What happens if I miss the add deadline? Can I late add a course? The Department does not allow late adds without extraordinary circumstances. If you feel your circumstances are extraordinary, please come in and speak with an Advisor. Make sure to check with the department offering the course; the late add policy varies in each department. What is the best major if I want to pursue a Ph.D. in economics? Ph.D. programs are extremely competitive and require extensive mathematic preparation. We highly recommend that you complete the Joint-Math Economics major if you wish to apply to graduate school in economics. Career Services will have the most up-to-date list of these requirements, or you can contact the specific schools you are interested in. 19 Departmental Opportunities Economics Departmental Honors: Distinction and Highest Distinction One-unit honor s sections taken concurrently with core courses. Sections are limited to 20 students to provide an opportunity to work closely with UCSD faculty. Completion of Econ 191A/B and honor s sections may qualify you for honors. Please check with an advisor if you are interested in learning more about honors. Econ 191A/B Two quarter senior thesis project designed for highest achieving students. Admission to this course is by application. Be sure to check with the Department regarding the application process. Econ 195, Undergraduate Teaching Apprentices Econ 199 Opportunity for qualified students to serve as a T.A. for courses they performed well in. Elective credit earned for completing an Econ 195. Admission to this course is by application only. Be sure to check our website for application deadline information. Independent research project with faculty, an alternative to the two quarter Econ 191A/B. Elective credit can be earned for the completion of Econ 199.

21 Your Questions Can any upper division Econ courses be taken concurrently with Math10C/20C? I will be taking Math 10B/20B in Fall and will be taking Math 10C/20C in Winter. Yes. We recommend students take Econ 2 in the Fall so that upper division electives are open to them in Winter quarter. Econ 2 covers material from Econ 100A/B without the calculus integration that satisfies the prerequisites of some of our elective courses. Are there any courses only offered certain quarters? Yes. Our Economics 172 and 173 sequences are not offered each quarter. Also, elective course offerings vary annually. Be sure to check our Planned Course Offerings to see our planned annual schedule (it is subject to change). Are course offerings impacted by the budget cuts? Yes. The university may offer less courses or seats in courses than in previous years due to budgetary constraints. This is why it is imperative to register at your appointment time. I was admitted as an Economics major but want to change it to Management Science. Can I do this? Yes. Once the quarter begins you can login to TritonLink and change your major using the Major/Minor Tool.
