1 \ UNSW Student Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy Number: O1PO Frequently Asked Questions Question 1 Note: This is an information sheet only and NOT an insurance policy or insurance advice. Students who seek advice on insurance should consult a licensed insurance professional. When am I covered by UNSW Personal Accident (PA) Insurance? Answer: When, as a student, you are participating or engaged in a UNSW activity, you are covered under the UNSW Personal Accident (PA) insurance program. Examples include classroom and lab work, fieldwork activities, UNSW approved work experience, overseas travel including exchange programs and participating in organized UNSW Sporting activities. The Personal Accident policy is not, nor does it take the place of health fund insurance. It provides a lump sum payment in the event of death or permanent disablement. It also provides limited medical expenses cover, however it will not cover medical expense payable by Medicare or any private health insurance a student may have. Question 2 How long does the PA insurance coverage last? Question 3 Answer: The coverage lasts as long as you are an enrolled student at UNSW or a registered member of a UNSW Sporting clubs. The non-medicare medical expenses are only payable for the first 12 months from the date of your injury. NB. Some of the benefits payable are time restricted. Do I need to fill out an application for PA Insurance? Answer: No. All enrolled students and registered members of the UNSW Sporting clubs are automatically covered. Page 1 of 5

Answer: When, as a student, you are participating or engaged in a UNSW activity, you are covered under the UNSW Personal Accident (PA) insurance program.

2 Question 4 Will the PA Insurance cover me for work experience? Question 5 Answer: All work experience must be approved by the student s Academic Supervisor or Head of School prior to the student s engagement with the outside employer. The Supervisor will determine the relevance of the work experience to the student s academic program. The student must download the Letter of Indemnity from the Risk Advisory and Internal Audit s Insurance website and have the document completed by their Academic Advisor or Head of School, as evidence of insurance coverage for the work experience. The student should retain a copy of the completed Letter of Indemnity for their records. Do I need to pay for my PA Insurance? Answer: No. Question 6 What happens if I am injured while participating in a UNSW activity or during a UNSW Sporting clubs sanctioned event? Answer: Students who are injured while participating in a UNSW activity or during an organized UNSW Sporting club activity should: Seek immediate medical assistance / treatment at the nearest appropriate facility. The Personal Accident policy is not nor does it take the place of health fund insurance. It provides a lump sum payment in the event of death or permanent disablement. It also provides limited medical expenses cover, however it will not cover medical expense payable by Medicare or any private health insurance a student may have. When feasible, the student should report the injury to the appropriate University authority such as UNSW Security or the UNSW Sporting Management. The student should ensure an Accident or Incident Report is completed by the appropriate authority. The student may claim for reimbursement for some expenses relating to the injury from the Group Personal Accident Insurance policy, following the claim procedures set out in question 11. Page 2 of 5

3 Question 7 In the event of claims, will I be responsible for any excess amounts? Answer: Yes. The student is required to bear an excess payment for certain classes of loss under the UNSW PA Insurance Program. Examples include: Question 8 A $50 excess each and every claim for Non-Medicare medical expenses Are there any age limits for this insurance coverage? Answer: Yes. The Policy will not apply to students, volunteers, and participants in UNSW Sporting activities who are 80 years of age and over. Question 9 Is this the only insurance which covers UNSW sporting injuries? Answer: Maybe not. Many of the UNSW sporting clubs are also members of national sporting associations who may have more generous GPA policies in terms of benefits and coverage for their members. If you are cover by another policy e.g. privet health insurance you are required to lodge a claim with them first. Question 10 Are there other significant exclusions of which I should be aware before making a decision on insurance? Answer: Yes. The UNSW Personal Accident Program has exclusions which affect the cover over time. Most notable exclusions include: Drug & Alcohol. Stress & Depression. Professional Sport (training for or participating in). War, invasion or civil war. Pre-existing medical conditions. Intentional self-injury, suicide or any illegal or criminal act. HIV / AIDS Pregnancy or childbirth (except for unexpected medical complications or emergencies arising there from). Page 3 of 5

4 Question 11 Is there a deadline for the filing of personal accident claims? Answer: Yes. Claims must be registered with the insurer within 30 days of the incident which gave rise to the injury or as soon as is reasonably practicable. Claims reported later can be rejected by the insurer for late reporting. Question 12 What are the current claims procedures? Answer: All claims are administered by our insurer, ACE Australia ACE Australia has a 1800 number to call for claims updates.
