2 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Acoustics consultant August Künzel Martin Lienhard Rehab Basel AG Marieke_Mannens 2

4 photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff Ricola Storage Building Baselstrasse Laufen 13FB7F610F47C6 This is a mechanized warehouse had to be built for herbs and herbal throat drops The structure appears to rest on ribs which can be seen protruding below the bottom-most of these layers They are attached to the slab which has been cast directly on the rocky ground forming the foundation of the warehouse Because of the open structure which is formed, the yellow colour of the thermal insulation can be detected between the panels The only exception to this is on the side exposed to the weather, where a silver foil offers additional protection against moisture The architects have given various reasons for the shape of the shell All of them have to do with the stacking of materials: planks piled to dry, or panels of cement, or even the shelves of the new hall In images like these, which they called upon when creating the design, the function and construction of the warehouse are rendered congruent in a complex fashion (text from website Ricola) photo: Evan Chakroff Floor area/size m² Ricola AG evanc 4

6 photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Actelion Business Center Hegenheimermattweg Allschwil The Business Centre is at the heart of the growing Actelion complex Its architecture is meant to offer an inspiring working environment, its forms stand for 'innovation, openness and communication' (J-P Clozel) Consisting of two floors under the ground and six floors above it, this building includes workspaces for 350 people, an auditorium and a restaurant An open steel construction provides support for cantilevered floors of different layouts, stacked atop of each other Jutting out in various directions, all the floors meet at four points that allow for vertical communication Although surface to volume ratio is large, the building incorporates many features aimed at sustainability - eg, green roofs, triple glazed glass, reactive louvers, photovoltaic cells photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Floor area/size m² Actelion Pharmaceuticals DinaBM Bus no38 from Schifflände in Basel, to bus stop "Im Brühl" in Allschwil 6
