5 COMPANY PROFILE The Children and Business Network CBNG was founded in 2013 by Ms Toyin Olakanpo, a seasoned lawyer and advocate for child rights and global education. The CBNG was set up as a grassroots advocacy initiative, in response to the UN Children s Rights and Business Principles launched in 2012, to raise awareness amongst the Nigerian private sector of their responsibilities to support Children Rights. After its successful launch in 2013 and the support of the Lagos State Government, a formal application was made for the initiative to be registered as a non - governmental organization. In March 2014, the Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility an Children s Rights ( CSR Children ) was born to carry on the work that was begun by the Children and Business Network. We firmly believe that investment in the African child is the key to economic growth in Africa and we fully uphold and endorse: the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990) the Child Rights Act 2003 (Nigeria) the UN Children s Rights & Business Principles (2012) We are committed to hosting 2 events each year, (June 1 - May 31), in partnership with Train 2 Gain Nigeria; to (1) engage the private sector and guide them as to their responsibilities towards supporting children s rights througt their CSR; and (2) to promote education and awareness of the rights of children. These events are: Annual CEO Forum on Children s Rights & Business Principles (October) International Day of the African Child Event (June) In relation to (2) above we launched the Girl Education Project on June 15, 2014 to promote education and awareness of the rights of the girl child. 5

6 ANNUAL CEO FORUM ON CHILDREN S RIGHTS & BUSINESS PRINCIPLES CEO Forum 2014 ANNUAL CEO FORUM ON CHILDREN S RIGHTS & BUSINESS PRINCIPLES The first Global CEO Survey on Children's Rights and Business was represented by the Boston Consulting Group at the World Child & Youth Forum in March It revealed that "CEOs have a limited awareness and knowledge about children's rights and have a hard time grasping thevalue for the business of acting on children's rights" This is particularly true in Nigeria and our Foundation, in partnership with Train 2 Gain, are working hard to change that perception through annual CEO Forum's on Children's Rights & Business Principles. Last year our theme was: "Children's Rights Are Everybody's Business - Hello CEO. The event was a huge success with the Governor of Lagos State, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola giving the Keynote address. The event was well attended by other dignitaries and CEOs and sponsored by Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Ltd, Nestle Nigeria Limited, Promasidor, UBA, First Bank of Nigeria, Diamond Bank and Polo Luxury Ltd. The importance of investing in girls and respecting the rights of girls and their education came to the forefront of our country's consciousness with the abduction of over 276 girls in Chibok, Borno State. This led our Foundation to launch the Girl Education Project on June 15, 2014 ( and direct the theme of our 2nd Annual CEO Forum on Children's Rights & Business Principles to the discussion of the "Girl Dividend: - Why should CEOs care? Our 2nd Annual CEO Forum will take place on October 8, 2014 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos. Plans are also underway for our 3rd Annual CEO Forum which will take place on October 7, The theme proposed is: "The African Child- Key to Economic Growth" SPONSORS

7 PROFILE: TOYIN OLAKANPO Toyin Olakanpo holds a Bachelor s degree in law from the University of Warwick Law School, UK and a Masters degree from the Steinhardt Department of Education, New York University. An accomplished lawyer, Toyin is admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and is a duly admitted Attorney of the State of New York. Toyin began her professional career at the leading law firm of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer where she completed her articles of training as a solicitor, before joining the Corporate Finance Team as a Managing Solicitor. She also worked as in - house legal counsel to the fund managers at Merrill Lynch Asset Management before she was recruited to work for the prestigious Wall Street law firm Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, in New York. While she was working in New York and carrying out pro bono legal work for the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, Toyin discovered her passion for children and working with children. She completed her training as a Montessori teacher and embarked on a career in early childhood education, inernational affairs, education and goverment policy. After almost ten years of working in the classroom and running a Montessori school, Toyin began sharing her knowledge and expertise in early childhood education with teachers and trainees through workshops and seminars. In 2009, she was appointed by the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola as Consultant on Early Childhood Education and charged with the responsibility of training over 1,700 teachers; reviewing over 2,000 nursery classes in Lagos State public schools and improving the delivery of their educatioal outcomes in line with the National Early Childhood Curriculum and the Millennium Development Goals. This project lasted three years and ignited the flame of international development, education and children s rights for Toyin, inspiring her to complete relevant post graduate studies on Educational Planning, Economics and International Development at the Institute of Education, IOE, London. Toyin is a passionate advocate for international development & CSR, children s rights,early childhood education, the Millennium Development Goals and the Education For All initiative in the context of Africa. She is the founder of the Foundation for CSR & Children s Rights, an advocacy platform to engage the private sector to make a serious commitment to support children s rights as part of their CSR Targets, in pursuant of the UN Children s Rights and Business Principles. 7

8 She is also the Head of Training, Advocacy & Consultancy at Train 2 Gain Nigeria providing seminars & training for companies in the areas of corporate governance, human rights and children s rights; and consusltancy in all education matters including the establisment of new primary and nursery schools; youth development programs and corporate crèche facilities and the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. Toyin has been recognized both nationally and internationally as a child rights advocate and was interviewed by CNN International on May 2, and May 4, 2014 on her response to the abductions of over 276 girls from Chibok, Borno State Nigeria. Toyin was also described in an exclusive interview with the award winning newspaper This Day, on June 14, 2014 as a shinning hope for the Nigerian Child. Toyin is a mother. She is blessed with one daughter.
