Volume 1 Number Chamber Honors the Memory of Its Founder Vicente Juliano Bonnard, President Emeritus of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., passed away on June 2, 2009, at the North Shore Hospital. He was 82. Mr. Bonnard was a founding member of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce in New York in His contributions to the growth and development of the Chamber, and to the creation of stronger business relations between Brazil and the United States in general, were far reaching and will be deeply missed. In 1970 Mr. Bonnard instituted the Man of the Year award, now known as the Person of the Year award, to honor two innovative and forwardthinking leaders (one from Brazil and one from the U.S.) who have made extraordinary contributions to the forging of closer ties between the two nations. He served as Chairman of its Organizational Committee until his passing. From 1948 to 1967 Mr. Bonnard was Head of the Brazilian Aeronautical Commission s New York Office. During this period he also performed logistical services for the Brazilian Army, Navy and Legislature, and provided assistance for the Military Delegates to the Brazilian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and for the Brazilian Delegation to the International Civil Aviation Commission (ICAO) in Canada. Mr. Bonnard also served as Representative of the (Brazilian) National Research Council (CNPq) in From 1960 to 1967 he was accredited to USIS and to the UN as representative and correspondent for the Rio de Janeiro newspapers O Dia and A Noticia. Mr. Bonnard was the founder and President of Persan Corporation from ; of Eximbras-Persan Trading Corporation from ; and of VJ Air Corporation from He was also a founding member of the Brazilian Institute for Education and Business Programs at Cornell University, a founding member of the Business Institute for Brazilian Studies at Pace University and a founding member of the Business Institute at San Diego State University. Remembering a Legend Selected messages received from public and private sector s leaders paying homage to the Chamber s founder. In English It is with deep sorrow that I have learned the news of the passing of Mr. Vicente Bonnard, who was a founding member of the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce. Since 1968, during his tenure at the Chamber, Mr. Bonnard personally oversaw the unprecedented expansion of the BACC into the major player it has become today, registering over five hundred and twenty corporations among its members. He was also instrumental, during these last four decades, in furthering the commercial relations between Brazil and the United States. Working tirelessly and with admirable vigor and dedication Mr. Bonnard was the beneficiary of innumerable awards and decorations which he so richly deserved. His legacy will remain as an example and an inspiration for the Chamber and its members. Osmar Chohfi, Ambassador, Consul General of Brazil in New York. 4 Events In Review Breakfast Seminar on Managing the Crisis: Brazilian and U.S. Cross-Border Tax Considerations Trade and Business Investment Committee Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP, New York City March 25, 2009 An outstanding panel of speakers including Julio Castro, Partner, Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP; Luiz Felipe Centeno Ferraz, Partner, Demarest e Almeida Advogados; and Lavinia Junqueira, Tax Director, Unibanco shared their expert perspectives on new tax developments with Chamber members and friends during this informative program. The panel provided an overview of crossborder tax issues faced by Brazilian and U.S. companies as a result of the financial crisis, and also offered insight into tax challenges and opportunities during the economic crisis, including use and acceleration of losses, use of tax attributed to acquired companies and tax implications of debt work-outs. The crisis effect on transfer pricing issues was also discussed. Business Networking Reception Membership Committee Jack Vartanian, New York City March 31, 2009 Breakfast Seminar with Mário Mesquita, Deputy Governor of Economic Policy, Central Bank of Brazil Banking and Capital Markets Committee White & Case LLP, New York City April 16, 2009 This timely event, which occurred only one day after Brazil reduced its 2009 primary budget surplus, drew almost 100 business leaders eager to hear Mr. Mesquita discuss Brazil s economic outlook during this challenging time. During his inspiring presentation, Mr. Mesquita stressed that Brazil s decision to cut its primary budget surplus goal should be seen as a government attempt to limit damage to the economy during the global recession. He also emphasized that the monetary easing campaign started by the Central Bank in January was already having a positive effect on economic activity, with household consumption expected to rise 1.6% in 2009 on the back of improving labor markets.
