1 Class of 2010 Employment Report
2 The Class of 2010 including graduates from May, August, and December of 2010 was comprised of 108 students. The School of Information Career Services Office officially surveyed these graduates in June 2011 and there were 55 respondents representing a 51% response rate. Partial data on an additional 32 graduates was collected manually through phone calls, s and in-person visits. This report includes basic employment data on all 87 respondents (both formal and informal), which represents 80% of the class. With 80% of the class accounted for, the report is representative of the cohort. Key Points: Information Science is the first professional career for 56% of our graduates 96% reported professional job outcomes or are continuing their education Job Satisfaction is reportedly high at 81% satisfied The majority of students begin their job search at least 3 months before graduation (58%) 45% are able to secure employment within 3 months; 71% within 6 months 70% of our graduates work in public service and non-profits, with 30% in the private sector Twenty diverse industries are employing our graduates The state of Texas is retaining 54% of our graduates, with the rest sprinkled across the country Starting salaries vary widely with the emerging fields accounting for higher salaries and archives the lowest with libraries in the middle An internship and/or the capstone experience was reported to be the most helpful activity in obtaining employment, followed by networking and career services 32% returned to an employer they worked with while at the ischool or previously indicating the potential for intern conversion and networking. 81% consulted with Career Services The job market in 2010 continued to be a tough economic climate especially for the traditional fields of libraries and archives. The tech community started to recover from the recession much quicker and many graduates who had initially only pursued public service looked to the private sector for career opportunities. The interdisciplinary nature of the ischool prepares graduates for a wide range of careers and the diverse skill sets of ischool talent are valued in many industries. The versatility of the program allows grads to switch fields readily and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Austin tech community and beyond.
