8 3 GRADUATE TRAINEE TESTIMONIALS Marsha Larned Program Manager, Institutional Investor Forums 6 TITLE][SIDEBAR TITLE] them at II. The job was and continues to be very multi-faceted, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. Having come from an eclectic past (working on the trading floor of a large French investment bank, teaching English on a remote tropical island, and interning with the World Policy Journal), I came to EMII with an interest in weaving together an array of skill sets: business, journalism and education. I felt that a trainee position in the Sponsored Conferences division would be a way to pursue those interests. When I first started, I did everything from scheduling calls with speakers, investors and sponsoring organizations, to managing those relationships through regular phone and e- mail communication. I also assisted in researching, writing and editing content for our conferences and helping to execute the events on-site. Those first months were particularly valuable as I learned about our different business channels and started to get a handle on the vast spectrum of content we cover in Forums. I learned a lot about business and the financial markets. My work as a trainee centered on the defined contribution/retirement space and high net-worth wealth management. It was a great experience to be exposed to the 360 degree angle of those topics (hearing about them from service providers and investors as well as making connections to larger market trends). I also learned a lot of intangible skills like how to deal with clients, diplomatically handling problems as they arose, and communicating more effectively. The job was and continues to be very multi-faceted, which is one of the reasons I like it so much. It is academic and intellectual, requiring a high level of analytical thinking and industry knowledge. It is also very client-focused which I enjoy. We are always on the phone and meeting new people as we gather market data and produce our conferences. The best part is traveling all over the country (and occasionally the world) to execute events. No day is ever the same! 7

9 4 Rey Mashayekhi Reporter, American Metal Market I joined Institutional Investor as a journalism major fresh out of college, weighing a number of professional options but unsure of how to proceed. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in writing, but also desired a challenge an opportunity to expand my horizons as a writer and reporter. When I came across II, I was initially skeptical I had little-to-no experience in the financial field, and reservations regarding my ability to cover the niche markets that comprise EMII s purview. I can now say that the Graduate Trainee Program not only prepared me for my task as a reporter covering the metals industry for AMM, but equipped me with fundamental, background knowledge of finance and economics that I m sure will benefit me for years to come. [SIDEBAR It s an opportunity for people interested in challenging themselves in a new, unfamiliar field to find their footing within this industry and fully grasp the work awaiting. The program s weekly training sessions ensure that II s future employees are well-versed in the essentials of finance and economics, as well as the history and operations of the company they are poised to join. Meanwhile, trainees are doing hands-on work every day in EMII s offices, performing the sort of tasks they ll be expected to perform as employees and gaining the sort of experience that is critical in preparing one for a career at the company. At AMM, a publication covering the metals industry, the six months I spent in the trainee program gave me invaluable time to acclimate myself to the demands of the job. From learning how to file stories in K4, to introducing myself to the relevant companies and players within the industry I was covering, to eventually being handed my own beat, the trainee program prepared me for a career as a financial journalist. The program has been characterized as a crash course in finance and economics, but it s much more than that. It s an opportunity for people interested in challenging themselves in a new, unfamiliar field to find their footing within this industry and fully grasp the work awaiting them at II. Starting a career within such an industry without much formal training can be stressful, and it is definitely a challenge, but EMII s graduate trainee program provides prospective employees with the time and patience to learn, develop and prove themselves as valuable assets to the company. And as a trainee, you re equipped with knowledge and experience that will benefit you for years to come. 8

10 5 Georgina Hurst Research Assistant, Institutional Investor Magazine [SIDEBAR TITLE] My role at II challenges me every day To me, the most meaningful outcome of the program is the capacity to use this knowledge anywhere in life. I applied to EMII s training program directly out of undergraduate college with a degree in international economics and with limited work experience in the finance industry. I was drawn to the program by two things: the ability to gain technical knowledge of a complex industry in a classroom setting and the opportunity to apply that knowledge through on-the-job projects and reports. Ultimately, the program proved to be extremely useful in both regards. As a trainee I was the editorial research assistant for Institutional Investor Magazine, working directly under the magazine s editor and research director. I wrote articles about pensions, hedge funds, macro research firms and mergers and acquisitions. I was also assigned various research projects, including a five-month undertaking for Institutional Investor s Alpha Magazine that profiled the 100 biggest hedge funds in the world through write-ups, tables and graphs for each firm. After the program ended, I was hired as the editorial research assistant for the magazine. My role at II challenges me every day. It requires juggling multiple deadlines on a tight schedule and pushes me beyond my comfort zone by requiring me to cold-call CEOs of major financial institutions around the world. The training program gave me the knowledge and the confidence to complete these tasks. To me, the most meaningful outcome of the program is the capacity to use this knowledge anywhere in life; the writing, communicating and time management skills are not limited to careers in finance or journalism. 9
