3 About the English Language Program Hofstra University offers conditional admission to international students seeking education at a leading American university. It prepares students for academic success through a rigorous program of English language instruction, which, upon completion, permits them to transition to fully matriculated status. The program serves as a bridge to regular admission to the University and, once regular admission has been secured, provides students with continued support in developing their language skills while they pursue their degrees. 1

4 2 Enrolling in the ELP for Graduate and Undergraduate Students Students who meet Hofstra University s admission requirements but have not demonstrated English language proficiency may be invited to enroll in the English Language Program (ELP). Sessions are offered in the spring, summer and fall. Upon successful completion of ELP course work and demonstration of English proficiency, students transition to a degree-granting program at Hofstra University. ELP TOEFL/IELTS Requirements Undergraduate Graduate* TOEFL TOEFL IELTS IELTS 6.0 Once they have successfully demonstrated English language proficiency, students are considered fully matriculated. There is no other requirement for full admission and no need for the student to file a separate application for admission to the University. Students who successfully complete the Advanced Level may, upon the recommendation of the ELP director, enroll in additional upper-level classes, but they are not required to do so as a condition of their continued status as fully matriculated students. *Some programs require higher scores.

5 ELP Beginner Level The Beginner Level, which includes the four courses listed below, takes place on our campus in Hempstead, New York. Upon completion of the Beginner Level, students continue with the ELP Advanced Level. ELP 011A, Introductory Reading Comprehension (3 s.h.): Development of basic academic reading skills in the various disciplines. ELP 012A, Introductory Grammar (3 s.h.): A systematic study of basic English grammar. ELP 013A, Introductory Conversation (3 s.h.): Development of basic functional English. ELP 015A, Introductory Composition (3 s.h.): Basic writing for students with very limited English proficiency, focusing on development of formal genres. Upon successful completion of the Beginner Level, students transition to the Advanced Level. ELP Advanced Level The Advanced Level, which includes the five courses listed below, takes place on our campus in Hempstead, New York. In addition to the five courses listed below, students enroll in an elective course chosen in consultation with an academic advisor. This program allows students to earn six credits toward the bachelor s degree. ELP 021, Reading Comprehension (3 s.h.): Development of academic reading skills in the various disciplines. ELP 023B, Oral Communication (3 s.h.): Development of the ability to communicate orally through discussion and role play. Focus on speech functions related to stating facts, challenging opinions, and reporting information. ELP 024B, Language Lab and Tutorial (3 s.h.): Supervised lab work and individualized tutorial using Hofstra s multimedia facilities. ELP 025, Composition (3 s.h. with degree credit): Development of expository writing skills, idiomatic usage, and argumentative strategies. ELP 026, American Encounters (1 s.h.): This course allows students to acquire better oral proficiency and listening comprehension by interacting spontaneously in English with native speakers. Learning activities grow out of field trips to New York City cultural attractions, walking tours of historic areas, and other activities. Elective (3 s.h. with degree credit): Chosen in consultation with an academic advisor. Upon successful completion of the Advanced Level, students transition to fully matriculated status at the University. 3

7 Student Life Residence Life Hofstra s Office of Residence Life offers a variety of comfortable living environments geared toward meeting the diverse needs of our resident students. A full-time professional resident director, graduate assistants, and undergraduate resident assistants, specially trained to assist students and develop a strong sense of community among the residents, staff each residential area. Many of the residence halls have been renovated in recent years and offer state-of-the-art group study rooms with technology-enhanced facilities, and exercise rooms. Residence hall styles range from high-rises offering single, double and triple rooms with common area lounges and bathrooms, to those with suite-style arrangements, some with a shared lounge space and in-suite bathrooms. Each residence hall has a shared community kitchen, on-site laundry facilities, and community living rooms. All residence halls have Wi-Fi and are cable ready. Note: Undergraduate and graduate students attending the ELP summer program are housed in one of the high-rise residence halls. Social Programs and Opportunities During the academic year, various programs are offered to help you develop your conversational English skills, become familiar with all the programs and services Hofstra University offers, explore your new home on Long Island, and discover the many exciting opportunities available in nearby New York City. Orientation Prior to the start of classes, you will participate in a mandatory International Student Orientation program that will assist you with your transition from your home country to Hofstra University. The program offers a series of informational presentations and numerous social activities that will help you become acquainted with the resources Hofstra University offers, learn more about academic expectations and U.S. culture, and meet fellow students.
