3 Planning Department City of Greensboro August 14, 2014 TO: FROM: David Parrish, Assistant City Manager Sue Schwartz, FAICP Director SUBJECT: Lawndale Drive Corridor Plan, Phase I Update The Greater Kirkwood Community and the Planning Department will be hosting a public meeting on August 21, 2014, at 7:00 pm, at the Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, located at 2100 Fernwood Drive, to review draft recommendations for the first phase of the Lawndale Drive Corridor Study. The attached postcard has been mailed to properties in the study area and distributed in digital form to stakeholders in the corridor and in the Greater Kirkwood Community. In April 2013, the City Council authorized a study of a 3.6 mile segment of Lawndale Drive between Cornwallis Drive and the future interchange with the Urban Loop in the area of Cotswold Avenue. The primary objectives of the corridor study is the development of a shared vision for the future character of the corridor, and creation of tools and strategies that support stability in adjacent neighborhoods while accommodating quality growth along the Lawndale Drive corridor. An existing conditions report of the entire corridor was completed in July 2013, with a recommendation to complete in-depth studies of the corridor in four phases. Work with stakeholders in the first phase was initiated in August 2013, covering properties along the section of Lawndale Drive from Cornwallis Drive to Cone Boulevard. Draft recommendations for Phase I of the study are available for review on the project website: along with a survey to collect feedback on the recommendations. For additional information about the study or the public meeting, please contact Hanna Cockburn, Long Range and Strategic Planning Manager in the Planning Department at or hanna.cockburn@greensboro-nc.gov. 5 Parks and Recreation City of Greensboro August 15, 2014 TO: FROM: Chris Wilson, Interim Assistant City Manager Wade Walcutt, Interim Director SUBJECT: Renovation celebration at Bryan Park You are invited and welcome to join us at 12:00 pm (noon) on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex located at 6105 Townsend Rd. We are happy to announce that we will be celebrating renovations made at the field house in Bryan Park s McPherson Stadium. This was possible through our department continuing to utilize public and private funding opportunities, and specifically with our partners the Guilford United Soccer Association (GUSA). The renovations include: New locker rooms New restrooms New landscaping o 5,000 square feet of sod o 40 new plants and trees As part of the renovation celebration, GUSA will also take the opportunity to honor the late Patrick Palmer. Mr. Palmer was the Executive Vice President of Burlington Industries and actively served the Greensboro community. Mr. Palmer was also an active member in the Greensboro soccer community and served on the GUSA board and Fusion board. One of his greatest joys was watching his children play soccer, a game he loved. If systems were registered, who has access to the information? There is the possibility that someone in the Police Department could pass this on to individuals so that homes without an alarm system could be targeted. Or, the information could be sold to alarm companies so that they would try to sell it to those individuals unless there are safeguards. My own experience with a home invasion was that the response was excellent but there were far too many police officers considering that the individuals were long gone. After spending several hours collecting fingerprints and details, we were told to go to various pawn shops to see if the stolen goods were at any of them. Even with repeated calls, we never could get any information on what action was being taken or the results of the fingerprints. We were told there was a backlog and we would be notified if anything was found. If the ordinance is passed, I will take my system out as it s not worth the cost and effort to register it. Even if something should happen, I have no confidence in the results. Overall Calls about overgrown lots increased last week. Call volume continued to be busy through the end of the week.
