1 Rles and Respnsibilities ucalgarycares Prject Assistant (Multiple psitins available) Prject Assistants reprt t the Manager, Centre fr Cmmunity-Engaged Learning (CCEL), and reprt t and wrk alngside the Prject Leader(s) t guide participants thrugh Reading Week r Spring/Summer Term servicelearning experiences that are part f ucalgarycares prgrams. In additin, Prject Assistants have the respnsibility f assisting with the planning f their trip which may include but is nt limited t delivering infrmatin sessins, assisting with selectin, rganizing service placements, facilitating reflectin activities and nline Desire t Learn discussins and cntributing t pre trip training. Student Prject Assistants are vital t the success f ucalgarycares prgrams. P.A.s serve as psitive rle mdels and mentrs fr student participants and play a key rle in maximizing student learning and team develpment. P.A.s ften act as a liaisn between the University and cmmunity grups and therefre shuld strive t ensure pen, psitive and reciprcal partnerships. Prject Assistants with ucalgarycares act as ambassadrs f The University f Calgary in Calgary, cmmunities acrss Canada and acrss the wrld. As such, it is imperative that Prject Assistants act with tact and diplmacy when interacting with students, staff, and faculty frm the University f Calgary and with the staff, vlunteers and clients at partnering cmmunity rganizatins. Prject Assistants must be aware f the need t minimize risk t student participants and thers invlved in the prgram. Prject Assistants must als be cnscius f prtecting the University s relatinship with the cmmunity. Errrs in judgment culd have very public cnsequences seriusly affecting the reputatin f the University f Calgary, the cntinuatin f ucalgarycares prgrams and the prtectin f ur relatinships with cmmunity rganizatins. Prject Assistants have a privileged psitin, and are in a place t psitively shape the lng-term relatinships between the University f Calgary and cmmunities in Calgary and acrss the glbe. If ever in dubt abut the best way t apprach a situatin, Prject Assistants are asked t cntact their Prject Leader wh will be happy t assist in any circumstance. Prject Assistants are cnsidered Peer Helpers (vlunteers) with the Centre fr Cmmunity-Engaged Learning. This psitin is recgnized n the University f Calgary s C-Curricular Recrd (CCR). RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Time Cmmitments and Training Pre-Prject Apprximately 3-5 hurs/week between September and the beginning f yur prject. Additinal time may be required during the recruitment prcess and the weeks immediately preceding the start f yur prgram. Yu will be expected t keep regular hurs in the Centre fr Cmmunity-Engaged Learning and attend regular meetings with yur Prject Leader(s) Prir t the service-learning experience, yur main duties will relate t student recruitment and selectin, team building and team preparatin

2 Rles and Respnsibilities Prject Assistants may be asked t facilitate team fundraising r a campaign t benefit ur cmmunity partner Participate in training sessins fr Prject Assistants/Prject Leaders n service-learning, grup travel, university plicy, and facilitating reflectin Yu will be expected t wrk during pre-service training and team meetings, requiring 3-5 weekend cmmitments. Prject Assistants are expected t have valid First Aid & CRP certificatin prir t prgram departure date. During Prject Yu will be n call 24 hurs/day during the prject Yu shuld expect t be up early and wrk beynd the time that participants retire fr the day Yu may need t meet with ther leaders t make preparatins fr the fllwing day, r discuss situatins that arse during the day Yu will NOT have time t wrk a secnd jb during yur in-service prject In additin t participating in the prject activities with the team, yur duties may include facilitating discussins, intrducing speakers, preparing fr grup activities and checking in with grup members Pst Prject 2. Leading and Learning Apprximately 5-10 hurs fllwing the cmpletin f yur prject Cmplete an evaluatin and prvide feedback n the Prject Assistant rle Participate in a pst-service wrkshp and debrief with the rest f the team Cmpile a reprt n the ucalgarycares prject t be kept n file and used in planning future prgrams. Assist with the planning f service and learning activities Lead by example and be an enthusiastic participant in all aspects f the trip, including pre trip training, service placements and living accmmdatins Assist with debrief facilitatin and reflectin (guidelines and directins will be prvided); this includes asking questins, ffering ideas and participating fully in grup activities Encurage curisity and critical thinking amng participants; engaging participants in discussin in and utside f reflectin perids

3 Rles and Respnsibilities Maintain a psitive attitude in spite f challenges, help participants find learning in all experiences Wrk with the Prject Leader(s) and cmmunity partners t identify apprpriate readings, dcumentaries and ther educatinal material related t the prject theme Assist the Prject Leader(s) in planning and arranging wrkshps and speakers related t the prject theme. Wrkshps take place prir t and during the service-learning prject. Lead and/r facilitate parts f wrkshps and reflectin sessins prir t and during yur prject With the Prject Leader(s), identify a series f reflectin tls t use thrughut the prject Facilitate discussins related t the prject theme n the crrespnding Desire t Learn curse Cmplete a persnal Learning Plan, and prvide nging supprt and feedback t participants n their wn learning plans 3. Team Success Help t build a chesive and effective prject team by planning team building activities fr the grup and supprting the cntinued develpment f team bnds Maintain regular and pen cmmunicatin with CCEL staff, Prject Leader(s) and ther Prject Assistants (if applicable) Supprt student participants by checking in frequently and asking pen ended questins t ensure everyne is engaged in the prgram and cnsulted in grup decisins Reprt any participant cnflicts r cncerns (including participatin and attendance) t the Prject Leader(s) and wrk tgether t make a plan t address them 4. Cmmunity Partner Relatinships Psitively shape the lng term relatinships between the University f Calgary and cmmunity partners Cnsult CCEL staff/ Prject Leader if there is uncertainty in hw t apprach a difficult situatin 5. Pre-Trip Respnsibilities Design and prvide cntent fr pre departure meetings in cllabratin with Prject Leader(s) and CCEL staff Attend and fully participate in all mandatry rientatins and prfessinal develpment sessins Facilitate pre departure meetings 6. Thrughut trip

4 Rles and Respnsibilities Attend check in meetings each day with the Prject Leader(s) t discuss the day s highlights, successes and challenges Assist the Prject Leader(s) with uphlding plicies that relate t the safety and security f participants, including the n alchl and drug plicy Ensure participants are aware f and abide by any plicies and prcedures utlined by a cmmunity partner/agency Crdinate the lgistics during the week including mvement f participants, head cunts, meals and schedules, rm assignments, meeting preparatin, clean up and activities Initiate and facilitate daily debriefs, meetings and structured reflectin sessins with the Prject Leader(s) Be flexible with any unexpected changes, g with the flw and stay psitive 7. Pst-Trip Respnsibilities Upn returning frm the trip, assist with cllecting participant infrmatin r ther administrative tasks (i.e. assessments and evaluatins) Plan and initiate a fllw-up wrkshp fr the team, with the assistance f the Prject Leader(s) Write a 2 3 page prject reprt (guidelines will be prvided) including recmmendatins fr future prjects 8. Additinal Respnsibilities During regular ffice hurs in the Centre fr Cmmunity-Engaged Learning Prject Assistants may be asked t assist with ther ffice duties, such as preparing fr wrkshps, answering questins abut ther service-learning prgrams etc. REMUNERATION This is a vlunteer psitin withut frmal remuneratin. Hwever, the CCEL will cver the cst f the prgram fees (activity fees, materials, accmmdatin, etc) fr Prject Assistants. Where there is air and/r grund travel invlved, the Prject Assistant is respnsible fr cvering thse travel csts. QUALIFICATIONS Previus experience with service learning (ucalgarycares prgram participant, Meal Exchange Peer Helper, CCEL Peer Helper, service-learning curse participatin etc.) Leadership and facilitatin skills and experience Knwledge f the ucalgarycares tpic (eg. Hmelessness, pverty, fd security etc) Up t date First Aid and CPR (r cmmitment t btain this certificatin)

Students spend the week wrking with the Mustard Seed n varius vlunteer prjects as well as participating in experiential learning pprtunities. Students will cnnect their service wrk t guest speakers and pre-departure wrkshps deepening their understanding f pverty and hmelessness in their city. Additinal fcus may be placed n cncurrent issues such as mental health, addictin r yuth issues. Prgram: ucalgarycares Building Healthy Cmmunities in New Orleans Time: Reading Week; 7 days Lcatin: New Orleans, Luisiana Ntes: Fcusing n several scial determinants f health, the Building Healthy Cmmunities in New Orleans prgram prvides students with the pprtunity t learn abut the multifaceted issues facing New Orleans pst- Hurricane Katrina. Students will vlunteer with rganizatins fcused n rebuilding, fd security and educatin while develping an understanding f cmmunity that extends beynd infrastructure. Students will see the cnnectins between the physical rebuilding f hmes and the scial justice issues f race, envirnment, pverty, educatin and plicy. Prgram: ucalgarycares Glbal Citizenship in Trnt 1 Time: Reading Week; 7 days Lcatin: Trnt, Ontari Ntes: Thrugh the Glbal Citizenship prgram, students will cme t understand what it means t be an active citizen and hw t understand their unique strengths and leadership ptential. Participants will be expsed t varius appraches t scial change and equipped with the tls t create a safe, inclusive and supprtive envirnment n campus, within their field and within the greater Calgary cmmunity. Additinal Qualificatins: As this is a First Year Experience prgram, preference will be given t candidates wh have experience wrking specifically with first year students thrugh prgrams such as Orientatin, Emerging Leaders Prgram etc. 1 Please nte: This is a First Year Experience Prgram and as such, all participants except fr the PA will be first year students.

6 Rles and Respnsibilities Prgram: ucalgarycares Csta Rica Time: May; 14 days Lcatin: Chira Island, Csta Rica Ntes: This prgram gives students the pprtunity t live with hst families fr tw weeks n Chira Island while explring ethical internatinal engagement in a crss cultural setting. Students will participate in wrkshps with lcal c-peratives and wrk with the Mnter and Palit Elementary Schl n a cmmunity-led prject. Students will be immersed in a unique crss-cultural experience. Additinal Qualificatins: The Prgram Assistant fr the Csta Rica prgram ideally has ne (r mre) f the fllwing qualificatins: 1) strng Spanish language skills, 2) certificatin as a lifeguard, 3) significant experience in building and supprting a team in a crss-cultural setting. Prgram: ucalgarycares Educatin in Nicaragua Time: June; 10 days Lcatin: TBA, Nicaragua Ntes: Students engage in a crss-cultural immersin experience in Nicaragua and will explre the crrelatin between access t wealth and educatin; the impact it has in large Nicaraguan cmmunities, cmpared with a smaller rural cmmunity and hw it differentiates when cntrasted with the Canadian educatin system. Participants will learn abut internatinal service-learning and vlunteer with SchlBOX t assist in the cnstructin r renvatins f a schl. Additinal Qualificatins: The Prgram Assistant fr the Nicaragua prgram ideally has ne (r mre) f the fllwing qualificatins: 1) Spanish language skills, 2) wrking tward a degree in Educatin, 3) significant experience in building and supprting a team in a crss-cultural setting. Prgram: ucalgarycares Indigenus Leadership & Engagement in the Yukn Time: June-July; 10 days Lcatin: Yukn Ntes: In partnership with the Native Centre, this prgram cncentrates n Indigenus and nn-indigenus cllabratin, fcusing n scial justice, leadership, Indigenus ways f knwing, and crss-cultural awareness. Participants travel t Kluane Natin territry t vlunteer with a cmmunity-led prject. Students receive all three levels f NAPI (Native Ambassadr Pst-Secndary Initiative) certificatin during the prgram. Additinal Qualificatins: Due t the nature f the prgram, preference will be given t candidates wh identify as FNMI (First Natins, Metis, Inuit).
