By 2050, there are half million new jobs anticipated (not including baby boomer retirement openings). 26,000 of these jobs are projected to be in the insurance industry. In-demand occupations will be emphasized and 85% of Ohio s federal funding for training will be used to train individuals for the 196 indemand occupations identified. Helping students and job seekers to plan their education and training to meet the skills for new jobs is critical. Assisting college graduates with translating their majors to available jobs is an important piece of meeting this goal (i.e. English major can develop skills to be a technical writer for an insurance company or medical writer with the right training and planning). Regional Survey of Public and Private Colleges and Universities The Board of Regents released the 2014 report on the condition of higher education (See report at this link: Conditions-Report_FINAL.pdf). This report included a number of recommendations on positioning career services as a strategic advantage for Ohio. As part of this effort, the Inter-University Council and the Board of Regents organized 4 regional sessions around Ohio to discuss OhioMeansJobs and career services with career services professionals from local public and private colleges and universities. The Chancellor, John Carey attended each session to present information on the administration s goals in relation to career services. After the Chancellor s presentation, Mark Birnbrich provided a short introduction on OhioMeansJobs, answered questions, and then sought input from the session participants on how OhioMeansJobs could better serve students and career services professionals in the college/university community. There were 4 questions participants were asked: 1) What functions in OMJ do you find useful today and/or would you enhance to better meet both your and your students needs? 2) What functions are missing to make OMJ a more useful partner with both you and your students? 3) If OMJ were to develop a College Owen, what functions/path would you want to see? and 4) What strategies can be employed to increase student utilization of OMJ in addition to your own career center systems? The input provided by Ohio s career services professionals at the regional meetings is summarized below. Current Trends in Career Services Technology and recruitment Increased reliance on technology by recruiters, making it more difficult for career services professionals to maintain a direct personal relationship with employers, which is critical to their ongoing success in placing graduates with employers. Technology skills Recruiters expect a higher level of technology skills for job candidates. Curriculum requirements Career services is often not included in curriculum requirements so students often wait till their senior year or after graduation to contact career services. Career services staff ratio The ratio of career services staff to students in most institutions is low, resulting in limited direct services and increasing the need to rely on technology as a supplement to direct service delivery. ODJFS OhioMeansJobs College/University Regional Input 1
1) Useful OhioMeansJobs (OMJ) Functions Available and Suggested Enhancements Registration Provide single registration for OMJ and career services (at student s own college/university career services office) at the same time. System Interface Provide a system interface between OMJ and the career services systems to share data, registration and make it easier to upload events from career services system to OMJ. Language OMJ tools should be tailored to use the same language and terminology that colleges/ universities and career services offices use. Career services reminder Tool/messages to remind college students to visit their own career services offices throughout their college/university career, especially at the beginning. Career services office contact information Add contact information for college/university career services offices to help students connect with their local career services office early and often. In-demand data Helpful for career services professionals, especially the regional data to help them guide students towards occupations that are in-demand. Career profile Helpful, but many colleges/universities use multiple career assessment tools and it may be desirable to add another career assessment tool after surveying Ohio s career services professionals (participants were asked to forward information on assessments for consideration. We have not received additional input at this point in time). Common assessment tools available on OMJ could reduce career services expenses. Abilities assessment Add a common assessment based on abilities since the career profile on OMJ is an interest-based assessment. Common assessment tools available on OMJ could reduce career services expenses. Online training Tailor to the needs of college students (career services professionals were impressed with the offerings, particularly for graduate school exam preparation, etc.) Career planning Add customized recommended activities for college students. Budget calculator Helpful for students to plan expenses and re-paying loans before graduation. Resume builder/rater Provide more information on how the rating is accomplished so Career services professionals advise students. Occupation search along with the information available on the detailed pages for occupations, including in-demand. Occupation search Make searchable by majors would be critical for college/university students. Occupation search Make searchable by skills would be important for college/university students. Veterans services portal Helpful for Vets attending college/university. Posting an event Make easier/more intuitive and/or allow for uploading multiple events through a data transfer. Employment Programs Add information which applies to college students as another target population. Scholarship Search Add the ability to save to the backpack. Job search The option to search for a job in a particular location and commuting distance is helpful. Job search Add ability to search by majors would be critical for college/university students. Job search Add ability to search by skills would be important for college/university students. Job search Add an entry-level filter for college/university graduates. The current entry-level filter is more geared towards individuals without a college degree and with little to no work experience. Partner sites/tools Some redirections to other tools or sites off OMJ can be confusing when there isn t a message to explain. OhioMeansJobs College/University Input October 31,
2) Functions to Make OhioMeansJobs a Useful Partner Data Sharing Career services professionals would like access to data on how many of their students are using OMJ as well as how (which tools, etc.) as well as a system interface between their local systems and OMJ. Career services also needs wage record data to help them track their students success at obtaining employment upon graduation. Student helper guidance Link and/or information up front for parents, counselors or faculty visiting the site to help a college student they know. There is no advice or direction for someone who wants to help someone else. Occupation search Allow students to search for occupations that match their majors (i.e., I m an English major. What occupations should I consider?) Occupation search Allow students to search for occupations that match their top skills (i.e., I m really good at math. What occupations should I consider?) Job Search Another entry-level filter tailored for college graduates. Job Search Make searchable by majors. Job search Make searchable by skills. Interviewing Add tool to help students practice interviewing skills. Networking Add information and/or tools to help students with networking, including how to connect with professionals and professional associations/organizations. Social Media Add information and/or tools to help students with cleaning up their digital image/footprint. Education/Training Search Include more information and ways to search like location and cost. Career Pathways Include majors in career pathways to help students envision what their path might be more easily for planning. Integrate jobs data between OMJ and the college/university system There was a suggestion that colleges/universities would like to download and analyze jobs using items such as CSO for filtering jobs to protect students. OMJ might be able to build new filters work with colleges/universities to identify search criteria for students. Registration Reduce the account creation requirements to simplify for students. Events Link alumni functions with career networking Job Posting Employer Access o Limit/reduce access for job posting and resume searching to ensure legitimate employers utilizing services. o Index job postings by majors, skills and/or required degree if possible. Relocation assistance/resources Manage Resumes Provide information and/or links on why it might be beneficial to consider relocating for a permanent job, how to relocate, and what to consider in relocating (i.e., relocation package from employer, checklists, storage, likely expenses, housing, etc.) Manage Resumes Send students a notification when their resume is viewed. Manage Resumes Add a feature to turn on automatic resume refreshing so resume will appear current for employer searches. Cover Letter builder The resume builder is helpful, but students often struggle with creating a cover letter as well. Entrepreneurship Add information and/or a tool. User Guide Add a user guide and/or training videos. Should be linked to the 1 st Up Guided Tour. Internships/Co-ops Increase/enhance this feature on OMJ to make it easier for students to search and encourage students to seek internships. OhioMeansJobs College/University Input October 31,
Internships/Co-ops Communicate this tool/need to employers along with the need to let OMJ or college/university know when interns are hired. Internships/Co-ops Incorporate OhioMeansInternships. Internships/Co-ops Data sharing on internships/co-ops through wage record data would help career services. Internships/Co-ops Promote the value an internship experience can provide for students when they are ready to search for permanent employment. Internships/Co-ops International students would benefit if curricular practical training (CPT) or optional practical training (OPT) internship opportunities are available since they are eligible for these work experiences. Internships/Co-ops Access to information on international internships available (see suggested products section below - Going Global and Career Passport). 3) Functions Needed for Collegiate Owen (Ohio s Workforce and Education Network) Some new functions suggested for a Collegiate Owen system are listed below as well as in the sample 1 st up guided tour layout which follows. Education path/major Help students identify/confirm which major to select at the beginning of college/university career. Interview preparation Provide tool/information tailored specifically to college students (sample questions to ask and answer -industry specific, clothing, behavior, what to bring, phone interviews, video conferencing) OMJ Usage Reporting Career services professionals would like access to data on how many of their students are using OMJ as well as how (which tools, etc.) as well as a system interface between their local systems and OMJ. Social media Provide information on how to improve/clean up online presence. Business etiquette Provide information on professional etiquette and behavior expectations. Professional associations Provide information on websites for professional associations and why it is valuable to connect with them for networking. Social/professional networking events Provide information on how to find events and the importance of attending/networking. Internship preparation/search Provide information and/or list of businesses in Ohio that provide internships. 1 st Up Guided tour Add learning modules links on the guided tour pages so students can view them prior to completing each recommended item. Examples included watching a video or reading a guide. Post events Career services should be able to post jobs fairs and career events to attract different seekers and employers. Volunteering/Community Information on how to find meaningful volunteer opportunities within the community to develop skills and experience as well as the importance of contributing to the community for a balanced life and to increase experience and skills. Multiple 1 st Up Guided Tour Options o Two distinct guided tours for students depending on whether they entered college directly from high school or are adult learners. o Multiple guided tours customized to each major including occupation search, job search, career planning, and networking. OhioMeansJobs College/University Input October 31,
Sample 1 st Up Guided Tour for College/University Students: Career services suggested that an online guide (guided tour) would need to be customized to use language that college students are used to hearing from career services and their college/university. 1. Career Assessment/Profile (would be helpful if possible to pre-populate with the college s programs/majors) 2. College Major Exploration 3. Career Pathways linked to majors 4. Make an appointment with your college s career services staff (with links to all offices) 5. Career Exploration (occupation search one sheeters search by major/and or skills with links for graduate school) 6. Clean Up Digital Footprint (Social Media advice) 7. Internships/Co-ops (incorporate OhioMeansInternships if possible). Promote the value an internship experience can provide for students when they are ready to search for permanent employment. 8. Budget Calculator/Salary Expectations 9. Resume Builder/Uploader and Rater 10. Interview Practice (sample questions to ask and answer -industry specific, clothing, behavior, what to bring, phone interviews, video conferencing) 11. Job Search by major and/or skills 12. Follow Up with Career Services staff 4) Strategies to Increase Student Utilization of OMJ: Suggestions for marketing to students are listed below: Faculty Support If faculty incorporated career services and OMJ into their curriculum, more students would benefit from career services offered as well as OMJ. Students respect faculty recommendations since faculty have an established rapport with students. Social Media Use social media outlets to promote OMJ to both High School and College students. Events Plan events at Ohio colleges/universities to promote OMJ. Career Counselors Conference Develop an Ohio conference partnering with Ohio Career Development Association and National Career Development Association to ensure career professionals have the information on OMJ. Speaking Tour Presentations at Ohio colleges/universities to promote OMJ with students and faculty. Successful students Train students on OMJ so they can spread the word and possibly provide training to other students. Publish testimonials of successful students. Student orientations Presentations at college student orientations OMJ with incoming students. Curriculum requirement Career Services and/or internship as a curriculum requirement would increase use of career services and OMJ. Similar to HB393 for K-12 education.
