2 Introduction TLE Series UPS is one of the best performing three-phase UPS systems providing critical power protection for a wide range of applications. The TLE Series operates in VFI mode (Voltage Frequency Independent) and has been developed to satisfy the growing request of high efficiency through an innovative control algorithm with 3-level inverter technology. This innovative product provides best-in-class efficiency in double conversion mode as well as eboost operating mode. TLE Series represent the state of the art in UPS design by the combination of latest power conversion 3- level IGBT technology and key design elements like reliability, efficiency, installation, serviceability and connectivity. Thanks to RPA (Redundant Parallel Architecture) the system power can be expanded by paralleling units or increased in reliability by adding redundant units. Key features reduced switching and filter losses with respect to a standard two level technology. Combined with optimized magnetics, the net result is an ultimate 96.5% efficiency in double conversion. On top of this, the high level of integration and the optimized power layout result in clean commutations with no overvoltages which in turn translate into reduced component stress and increased reliability. Compact design & front access Front access for operation and maintenance are considered as key features in UPS design. This feature results in a limited installation space installation against a wall allowed and easier and fasted intervention by service engineers during maintenance activities. Modular & Draw Out Construction All the sub-assemblies for the TLE Series are designed and assembled to have slide out modular construction that allows fast maintenance and service. Standard Safety and Maintenance Feature TLE Series UPS has standard built in back-feed contactor as well as maintenance switch that avoids external installation of switches or breakers into input distribution panels for providing back-feed protection and maintenance disconnect. Improved Diagnostic and Reliability with new FLEX DSP Every TLE Series UPS incorporates improved diagnostic capabilities with the new FLEX DSP control board that provides capability of waveform capture, diagnostic and trend analysis. The TLE Series is also equipped with special hardware and monitoring capability for limited life components like fans and capacitors. Improved Diagnostic TLE Series new diagnostic features allows to store different wave forms and also provides fan failure detection as well as warning on capacitor life that improves UPS availability and enhances preventive maintenance capabilities. True On-Line Double Conversion VFI-SS-111 Double conversion guarantees the continuity of the output power supply. VFI technology (Voltage and Frequency Independent) avoids the propagation of any input mains disturbances to the critical loads. These performances allow the optimization of ancillary equipment like air cooling, saving also direct and indirect energy costs. Output capability TLE Series is designed to supply all critical loads at full power without restriction or downgrades, the basic concept consists in an output active power equal to apparent power (kva = kw). This feature allows to provide full UPS power to critical loads regardless if they have inductive, unity or capacity power factor. 4 Main UPS components Rectifier The rectifier consists of a controlled 3-level IGBT bridge, which converts the 3-phase mains voltage into a controlled and regulated DC-voltage. This regulated DC-voltage is used to supply power to the inverter and to battery charger. Clean input technology IGBT rectifier bridge performs an input sinusoidal current ensuring a limited THDi (Total Current Harmonic Distortion) below 3% with power factor o additional filters to reduce current harmonics or to increase power factor are required. Soft start As standard feature the rectifier employs software control to limit the start-up current and voltage. The load power is applied to the mains gradually, preventing instable conditions for the upstream protection devices and for emergency GenSets regulation. In case of RPA configuration, the different UPS start sequentially. The wide AC input voltage ( V) and frequency (45 66Hz, 50/60Hz ±10%) accepted by the rectifier, avoids battery operation even with an unstable AC input voltage. The energy stored in the battery is so preserved for real critical mains perturbations. The reduced battery charge/ discharge cycles preserve also battery life. Different voltages are accepted by additional adaptation transformer. Hz +10% 50-10% UPS input current after mains recovery Inverter The 3-level IGBT inverter converts the DC-voltage into a three-phase AC-voltage with constant amplitude and frequency, which is completely independent and isolated from the AC-input voltage. Output voltage and frequency The UPS output voltage is set at 3x380/400/415 V + neutral, 50 or 60 Hz. Different output voltages are possible by additional adaptation transformer. 5 Bypass The automatic consists of a static semiconductor-switch (SSM: Static Switch Module), used to provide an uninterrupted transfer of the load from inverter to mains and vice-versa. It also transfers the load to input mains in case of overload, load short-circuit, inverter fault condition or based on manual input. During overload and short-circuit, re-transfer to inverter is automatically initiated once normal load conditions are restored. The load can be transferred to provided that the input supply is within the voltage and frequency tolerances (adjustable); otherwise the inverter operates with its internal frequency (free running) and the transfer to mains inhibited. Bypass The manual consists of a pair of manual switches (Q1 and ), which remove the UPS from the load for maintenance, while still supplying the load with power directly from the mains. Back-feed protection TLE Series is equipped, as standard feature, by a back-feed protection tool installed inside the UPS cabinet. The back-feed protection is a safety requirement for servicing personnel, according to IEC (General and Safety Requirements for UPS), realized by an electromagnetic contactor in series with the static switch of the line. It avoids back-feed current, via the automatic, in case of SSM failure during operation in battery mode. This protection works automatically by opening contactor (in series with the thyristors of the static switch) and eventually K7, and acts in case of internal defects of the system, or due to wrong manipulations on the manual. Battery The battery supplies the DC power to the inverter when the mains is missing or out of acceptable tolerances. It is normally sized to supply the inverter at rated load for the required back-up time. TLE Series can operate with different battery technologies Pb sealed (VRLA) Pb vented icd for short to long autonomy time. Superior Battery Management (SBM) The battery system of a UPS is a critical element, which defines system reliability and must be effectively maintained and monitored to ensure optimum reliability and protection of the critical load. To preserve UPS system reliability and battery lifetime, TLE Series provides a battery management feature know as SBM (Superior Battery Management). SBM is a programmable management feature that monitors the battery by periodically testing the battery system. The programmable features of SBM allow the user to select the frequency and type of battery tests that are to be performed. The frequency can range from once a week to once a year and the type of test can range from deep cycle to a short time discharge. All tests are performed automatically with the UPS in normal operation mode. The tests data are logged in the UPS events menu and any failure of the battery system is reported by alarm on the front panel alarm. SBM also gives the user the ability to perform a manual test at any time. True battery autonomy SBM also performs the ability to calculate true battery autonomy and remaining back up time, during a mains outage, based on effective UPS load. Based on real autonomy time, the UPS initiate the shutdown procedure, named stop operation, starting when the remaining time is limited to 3 min. (adjustable) generating an alarm to warn the operator or to start-up the load shut down procedure. 6 Mimic touch screen display TLE Series UPS is equipped with menu-driven touch screen display panel, easy to read, with UPS status, metering, parameter settings and configuration. Integration with BMS TLE Series can be easily integrated into a BMS (Building Management System) by Customer Interface board, RS232 port or SMP card which help to exchange information about the status of the UPS. 7 Operation modes ormal operation mode VFI (Voltage Frequency Independent) Under normal conditions the load is permanently powered by the inverter with constant amplitude and frequency. The rectifier, powered by the mains, supplies the inverter and the battery-charger keeps the battery fully charged. The inverter converts the DC voltage in a new AC sine wave voltage with constant amplitude and frequency independently from the input mains power. eboost operation mode - eboost high efficiency (up to 99%) - fast power transfer (< 2ms) When the eboost operation mode is selected, and the mains power is available, the load is normally powered through the automatic. When the mains voltage is detected out of the prescribed tolerances, the load is automatically transferred to the Inverter. When the mains recovers, the load returns to the automatic after a variable time defined by the control unit. charge r charge r Inv erte r Inv erte r M a nual by p ass eboost TM can be operated in in single and in RPA mode, up to 6 UPS modules in parallel, with all units operating and switching as one through redundant communication bus. Mains failure operation When the mains is no longer within acceptable tolerances, the battery will provide the DC power to the inverter. The inverter will maintain continuous AC power to the load until the battery voltage reaches the lower limit of the Inverter operation capability. During the discharge, the displays shows the estimated time that the battery can support the critical load. Prior to complete battery discharge, the "stop operation" alarm (shutdown imminent) warns the operator that the battery is almost discharged and the UPS is about to shut down. Mains recovery operation As soon as the AC input power recovers, the rectifier will start automatically, supplying DC power to the inverter and recharging the battery. If the inverter was previously shut down due to low battery, the load will be initially supplied by mains through the automatic. When the battery is sufficiently recharged to ensure a minimum time of operation with the present load, the inverter will start automatically and the load will be transferred back to the inverter. charge r Inv erte r Inv erte r In normal operation, the load is supplied by the inverter. When the control system detects a fault in the inverter, an overload condition or a short-circuit condition, the automatic will transfer the critical load to the mains without interruption. When the inverter recovers, or the overload or short-circuit condition is corrected, the load will be automatically transferred back to the inverter. If the UPS is unable to return to normal mode following an automatic transfer to mode, an alarm condition will be initiated. A manual (operator initiated) will not be considered as an alarm condition. The manual circuit consists of manual switches Q1 and, which permit transfer of the load directly to the unconditioned AC power without interruption, leaving the UPS available for maintenance. Frequency converter TLE Series can run as frequency converter 50 to 60 Hz or vice-versa. and manual functions are inhibited, therefore the load cannot be transferred to mains in case of overload, short circuit, or inverter failure. 8 Reduntant Parallel Architecture (RPA ) Parallel System Operation Whenever a UPS are applied in mission critical applications, a single unit protection is no longer sufficient. To respond to this requirement for the highest level of reliability, GE developed a redundant-parallel system, known as RPA (Redundant Parallel Architecture), a GE exclusivity. All the inverters equally share the load. Two or more equal power units can be paralleled to increase the output power (paralleling for capacity) or to improve the overall reliability of an UPS system (paralleling for redundancy). The outputs of parallel units are connected to a common power bus, and in normal operation the units connected on the parallel bus share the load equally. The modular concept of TLE Series allows parallel operation of up to 6 units, without using paralleling switchgear, external circuits or common control circuitry. Parallel for power capacity Several units can be paralleled in order to achieve output power greater than the maximum power of a single unit. The maximum total power shared between the paralleled units is equal to the total installed nominal power. In the event of a failure of one unit, the power supplied by the UPS system becomes insufficient and the load will be transferred to the mains source. Parallel units for redundancy The nominal power rating of the n out of n+1 redundant paralleled modules must be equal to or higher than the required load power. The load will be equally shared by the n+1 units connected on the output bus. In case of one of the n+1-paralleled units trip off-line, the remaining (n) modules will supply the load, maintaining conditioned power to the critical load. From this results higher reliability and security for the load plus a higher MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures). RPA features The TLE Series parallel system is designed to provide a complete Redundant Parallel Architecture, and is free from common equipment. ot only the inverters but also the functions are redundant. When one UPS needs maintenance or service, the load is powered by the other units. The redundant communication bus to which all units are connected keeps each unit informed about the status of all the other units. The control panel located on each unit allows controlling and monitoring the status of this unit. System control A high-speed redundant, serial communication bus guarantees the exchange of data and thus the communication between the CPU's of each unit. Each module controls is own function and operational status and communicates with all other modules, in order to act or react if necessary, adapting to the new conditions. Synchronization All units are identical, but one unit is arbitrarily selected as the reference and all the other units synchronize to this unit, which in turn synchronizes to the mains voltage, as long as the latter is within tolerances. In case of reference failure, another unit in the parallel system is automatically chosen to take over the reference role. The input for all the units of the parallel system must be supplied from the same AC source (no phase shift allowed between them). Load sharing On each unit of the parallel system, inverter output voltage and current are measured and applied to a load sharing bus. An eventual difference between the units is therefore automatically equalized. Page 8

9 RPA operation modes ormal operation mode When the system is in normal operation mode, all the rectifiers as well as all the inverters of the installation are operating. The mains supplies the parallelconnected rectifiers. Each rectifier supplies both battery and inverter by converting the mains AC voltage into a DC voltage. All the inverters equally share the load. Inv erte r Inv erte r Rectifier failure Rectifier disturbance mode is recognised by a disturbance in one or more rectifiers. The disturbed rectifier(s) do not supply any energy. Depending on the set-up, defined by the customer, the inverters of those single units having disturbed rectifiers, will draw their energy from the battery or RPA will immediately isolate the disturbed unit. The other installations continue in normal operation mode. All the inverters acting jointly, as described under normal operation mode' sustain the load. Inv erte r Rectifier Inv erte r Bypass mode Bypass mode is triggered when all the available inverters are unable to sustain the load due to overload or due to failure on UPS units. All inverter output contactors (K7) are opened automatically and the inverters, depending on the type of disturbance, continue to operate and the rectifiers continue to charge the batteries. Once the load level returns in normal condition the UPS switch back to normal operation mode. Q4 K7 Q1 Inverter Q4 K7 Q1 Inverter Battery mode A mains failure will trigger battery mode. The rectifiers do not supply any energy. The batteries supply the inverters with the required energy. The inverters supply the load as described under normal operation mode. If the mains do not recover and the batteries are used up, the load will be cut off. In this situation, when the mains recover, the parallel will supply the load. For security reasons, the inverters will have to be switched O manually. Rectifier Inv erte r Inverter disturbance 'Inverter disturbance mode' is triggered by a disturbance in one or more inverters. As long as the output of the remaining single units is sufficient to sustain the load, RPA remains in normal operation mode but the system may become parallel and is no longer redundant. The inverter output contactors (K7) of the disturbed unit open automatically to isolate the disturbed unit from the load. The rectifier of the disturbed unit, depending on the nature of the disturbance, will continue to charge the battery. The disturbed unit can also be completely separated from the mains for service operation. Inv erte r eboost in RPA All the UPS run on eboost supplying the load via the. In case of perturbation on input mains all the UPS switch to normal operation till the normal situation is recovered. Maintenance mode The maintenance mode is used in case, all units are switched off and the system output has to remain powered. One maintenance for each UPS. Maintenance on each UPS subcomponents can be made voltage free. During this mode of operation the load is supplied directly by mains. The input neutral shall be grounded at source and shall never be disconnected. 4 pole breaker shall not be used at the UPS input (see also IEC 60364, IEC 61140, IEC 61557). The protection of the UPS mains input must be exclusively with 3 pole breakers. Disconnection of the eutral is not permitted. The UPS needs the connection of the eutral to the input, to guarantee the function in T mode (eutral-earth). Page 10
