With a PhD and Bachelor of Psychology my passion is to understand and improve Queenslanders lives. My training has given me great tools for working at the forefront of public policy in areas such as road safety and customer services. In fact, the work of a policy officer fits many university disciplines. Effecting policy change is about using solid background research methods and academic thought processes to define and dissect problems. It s about being able to construct arguments to make policy recommendations and it s the ability to understand and articulate government direction on key issues that affect the public these are the skills of a policy officer. One of the achievements I m most proud of is the reform of the Graduated Licensing System for young drivers. Our legislative changes have made a real difference, saving the lives of many young drivers and those they share the road with. We re talking about our family members, our mates whose lives are made safer because we changed the policy around the licensing system. We re not just sitting behind desks, we re getting involved in creating real solutions for real issues. We re making a positive difference to the big issues in people s day to day lives. Graham Fraine, Deputy Director-General, Policy

I m going places with policy in Queensland Government. I graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in health and society so it wasn t always my intention to work in policy but I m very happy. I get to work with influential people who affect change in our society and I feel privileged to be part of this every day. Good policy means success in community engagement, consultation and communication. While on the graduate program I did just that through Queensland Health with stakeholders in rural, remote and Indigenous communities. I coordinated the negotiations of service delivery between Hospital and Health Services and the Commonwealth Government. Bottom line? Improving Queensland s health services. I ve supported the Governor of Queensland through our Executive Council Secretariat in Constitutional and Administrative Law Services. I worked on constitutional matters, swearing-in ceremonies and reviewed petitions for pardon. Recently I worked on strategies to address the issue of alcohol and drug related violence in Queensland a hot topic in our community. I get to be creative because we are leaders in innovation. Lauren Pearce, Policy Officer

One policy idea can effect change for the better Policy: what other career allows you to make fundamental change in society?

A career in Social Policy means working across issues that affect the Queensland Police, justice systems, affordable housing, disaster management, counter terrorism and many agencies such as disabilities and ageing. I wouldn t have any other job. Every day, every week, every year is different. For instance, I worked closely on disaster management and recovery plans for Cyclone Marcia and regularly liaise with national and state bodies on counter terrorism plans to secure the State of Queensland. After joining the graduate program, I worked on major reform for the Water Act, where a large range of social issues were researched, identified and resolved. Drought was at an all-time high for Queensland farmers and we were responsible for implementing drought smart solutions to ensure continued livelihood for farmers. Queensland now has progressive Right to Information laws resulting from a two-year project that I led. Most recently, I worked with the Honourable Quentin Bryce, former Governor General of Australia, leading the secretariat that delivered a prominent report into domestic violence. Our report will make a real difference to victims and survivors of domestic violence by implementing legislative and service delivery changes, along with better experiences in the courts. Don t accept the world as it is put yourself in someone else s shoes and make the world a better place. Christine Castley, Senior Executive Director, Social Policy

Policy become a change maker. The Yellow, The Commonwealth Games, Career Exchange Programs get these opportunities anywhere else? I don t think so. I m a former graduate with a Bachelor of Business majoring in accountancy. As part of the graduate program I learned valuable skills like networking and developing effective stakeholder relationships as it s crucial to getting the job done and I get paid to make a difference. In Economic Policy, I learned how to succinctly summarise hundreds of pages down to one page The Yellow. I write the summary that sits on top of every single policy submission read by the Premier and every Cabinet member that what s helps them make their decisions. Top of mind at all times is why does this matter to Queenslanders, why do we need this policy, what s going to change for Queensland? One piece of paper, The Yellow changes people s lives and as a graduate I got to voice my opinion. Currently I m working on the policy strategy for the 2018 Commonwealth Games to ensure that Queenslanders continue to reap the benefits after the games close. I m also participating in an inaugural three month exchange program with a leading professional services firm where I get to transfer my skill set in the private sector environment. Nathan Dummer, Policy Officer

A graduate program that makes all the difference. It s anything but an everyday job and I m looking forward to a positive future in economic and environment policy.

As a policy officer with a Bachelor of Science, I started in the Environmental Protection Agency working on changes to Queensland s environmental legislation. A major highlight was working on rezoning the Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park establishing new conservation and fishing zones. We modernised the Nature Conservation legislation to improve protection for national parks and wildlife. I wasn t stuck behind a desk, I travelled to train wildlife and park rangers on what this new legislation meant for them. As part of the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan secretariat, I worked with Queensland and Commonwealth stakeholders on projects designed to improve water quality in the Great Barrier Reef. Our team delivered the Reef Summit the outcomes resulted in legislative changes in Queensland and significant funding to improve land management in reef catchments. I m really proud to say I received an Individual Achievement Award from the Premier for my work as a Policy Contact Officer. Contentious environment issues that s what drives me. Rachel Lunnon, Principal Policy Officer, Economic Policy

When you enjoy work it s easy to turn up every day. I started out working with children in out-of-home care at Lifeline Community Care. I realised I wanted to improve the system so I became a policy officer developing child protection policy. After finishing postgrad studies I spent a very rewarding year in the Pacific working on United Nations projects focused on democratic governance. Since then I ve moved into a career covering bigger picture issues like economic policy and effective governance. I worked on significant and controversial policies including National Health Reform. We decentralised hospital services to local boards a major change to the health system. I m now working on electricity pricing and regulation. This has a direct impact on every Queenslander. Changes are needed to prevent future price increases. Good public policy is something I m passionate about. It needs to be rigorous and evidence-based to deliver good outcomes, but it s also our job to communicate how it will impact on people s everyday life. I wouldn t have received these opportunities anywhere else. Phil Richardson, A/General Manager, Energy Consumer and Pricing Policy, it s a very rewarding career choice.

It only takes one idea to set in motion a chain of events that results in significant improvement for the people in our state.
