HOBCAW BARONY Celebrating 50 Years of Research, Conservation and Education! The first recorded mention of Hobcaw is found in 1718, when the Lords Proprietors granted to John Lord Carteret 12,000 acres commonly called Hobcaw Point. For nearly two centuries, the property passed through a number of owners until it was eventually purchased in the early 1900s by Bernard M. Baruch, who established his winter home on the property overlooking Winyah Bay. A Wall Street financier and advisor to five U.S. Presidents, Baruch entertained many notable leaders of the day, including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Baruch s eldest child, Belle, made the barony her winter home starting in the 1930s and eventually bought the property in its entirety from her father. Upon Belle s passing in 1964, Hobcaw Barony was left to the Foundation established in her will decreeing that the land, flora and fauna be forever protected from development and utilized for research and education by the colleges and universities of South Carolina. Today, Hobcaw Barony is a treasure trove for anyone who wants to discover its rich history or explore its complex eco-systems. The salt marsh, forest and wildlife of Hobcaw Barony provide extraordinary opportunities for studying habitat and ecosystem processes, conservation and climate change, attracting researchers from numerous national and international institutions. The estate s expansive history encompassing early European settlement, plantation life during the rice era, and domestic life of one of the leading U.S. citizens of the 20th Century offers an exemplary historic narrative that parallels many of the significant events in our state and nation s histories. The Belle W. Baruch Foundation continues to uphold the mission to conserve Hobcaw Barony s unique natural and cultural resources for research and education; and strives to make Hobcaw the premier learning center in the Southeast for coastal ecology and history. is proud to host the inaugural Roast and Toast at Hobcaw Barony a true cultural tourism asset for the Grand Strand, and a prime example of the extraordinary visitor experiences found in Undiscovered SC!
