2 Projects Involved Nov present Project name: MEMS Reconfigurable Subwavelength Metallic Slits for Broadband Terahertz Modulation. Budget: Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Position: Researcher under supervision of Prof. Mona Jarrahi. Design, development, and characterization of a miniature RF MEMS switches for broadband THz modulators. Assisting the THz design of the modulators. Nov Nov Project name: NEMS Integrated Reconfigurable Antenna operating at 150, 400, 700, 800, and 4900 MHz bands for Interoperable Public Safety Communications. Budget: $640k, funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Position: Team leader under supervision of Prof. Bedri Cetiner Design, development, and characterization of a surface micromachining process for novel DC-40 GHz, ohmic contact, series RF NEMS switches. Training and coaching three students/researchers on the design and fabrication of the proposed antenna. Integration of RF NEMS switches with the base of the antenna. Final measurement and characterization of the antenna. Training and coaching one PhD student on the MEMS fabrication process. Apr Apr Jun Nov Jun Jun Project name: Nanofabrication and Packaging Processes for Multifunctional Reconfigurable Antennas. Budget: $90k, funded by USTAR. Position: Team leader under supervision of Prof. Bedri Cetiner. Design, development, fabrication, packaging, measurement, and characterization of a monolithic, multifunctional, radiation pattern reconfigurable RF MEMS based antenna at 5 GHz. Project name: Name cannot be revealed because of nondisclosure agreement. The project is basically development of an RF MEMS phased array antenna for a mm-wave radar. Budget: $15M, funded by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) Position: RF MEMS team coleader under supervision of Prof. Simsek Demir. Leaded, as a coleader, preparation of the RF MEMS part of the project proposal which has a budget of $9 million. Technical feasibility and selection of component types and specs. Main responsible, as a coleader, of determination of the necessary cleanroom and RF testing equipment, selection of the vendors, and keeping the correspondences. Project name: mm-wave RF MEMS Production and Measurements. Budget: $4.5M, funded by Undersecretariat for Defence Industries of Turkey. Position: Project coleader under supervision of Prof. Tayfun Akin and Prof. Simsek Demir. Designed, developed, fabricated, measured, and characterized GHz, frequency reconfigurable RF MEMS phase shifter. Designed, developed, fabricated, measured, and characterized GHz, frequency reconfigurable, all-passive RF MEMS vector modulator. Guided the design and measurements of RF MEMS switches, tunable capacitors, phase shifters, and a phased array antenna. Guided the reliability and power handling measurements of the capacitive contact, shunt, RF MEMS switches. Leaded the packaging, integration, and anechoic chamber measurements of the RF MEMS phased array antenna. Main responsible of upgrading the 1-40 GHz measurement and characterization capabilities of the METU EEE Microwave and Millimeter Wave Research Laboratory to 67 GHz. This process included selection, purchasing, installation, and acceptance of more than 20 low and high frequency equipments and a temperature controlled, vacuum probe station. Trained and coached, as a coleader, four MSc and PhD students on a comprehensive
3 training which included design of RF MEMS components (both circuit and EM level simulations), hands on training for MEMS fabrication process, DC and RF measurements, and post measurement characterization. Jun Nov Project name: Industrial Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). Budget: $10M, funded by Turkish State Planning Organization (DPT). Position: Researcher under supervision of Prof. Tayfun Akin. Developed, as one of the two leading people, of all three generations of the METU RF MEMS Fabrication Process. Main responsible of determining the design rules of the METU RF MEMS Fabrication process and preparing its documentation. Served as the tool managers of BALZERS BAS 450 PM planar magnetron sputtering system, Automegasandri 915B critical point drying system, Fibrotools electroplating setup, and Suss PMV 150 manual vacuum probe station. Had administrative level access to Veeco Dektak 8 Profiler, Veeco Wyko NT 1100 Profiler, and JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope. Jul Nov Project name: Design and Fabrication of a Receiver-on-a-chip as a System (104E048). Budget: $100k, funded by TUBITAK. Position: Team leader under supervision of Prof. Simsek Demir. Designed, developed, fabricated, packaged, measured, and characterized GHz RF MEMS triple stub impedance tuners for a 1-level packaged RF-frond-end. Contributed to the development of the multi-pin MEMS automated measurement setup (MAMS), which is a computer controlled RF MEMS test environment with up to 32 simultaneous controls. Leaded the packaging and integration of the whole RF-front-end. Training and coaching three students/researchers on the MEMS design, packaging, and integration to the proposed RF-front-end. Jan Oct Oct Sep Project name: Advanced MEMS for RF and Millimeter Wave Communications (AMICOM), Network of Excellence. Budget: 200k Euro, funded by EU 6 th Framework Program (FP6). Position: Project coleader under supervision of Prof. Simsek Demir, Prof. Ozlem Aydin Civi, and Prof. Tayfun Akin. Developed, as a coleader, the 3 rd Generation METU RF MEMS Fabrication Process which had more than 99% yield and by which a monolithic phased array (5 cm x 6 cm) could be fabricated successfully. Worked together with 28 research groups in Europe on several work packages. Was the leader of METU Group on an internal project, Reconfigurable Radio Front End (ReRaFE), where a MEMS based RF-front-end was designed with the collaboration of 10 research groups. Designed, fabricated, measured, packaged, integrated, and characterized a reconfigurable GHz RF MEMS impedance tuner for LNA input impedance tuning. Designed and measured RF MEMS switches and impedance tuner for two Multi Project Wafer (MPW) RF MEMS runs. Designed LTCC packages for RF MEMS switches. Trained and coached, as a coleader, two MSc students on a comprehensive training which included design of RF MEMS components (both circuit and EM level simulations), hands on training for MEMS fabrication process, DC and RF measurements, and post measurement characterization. Project name: Innovative Antennas for Emerging Terrestrial and Space-based Applications (102E036/COST 284). Budget: 80k Euro, funded by European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Program and TUBITAK. Position: Senior researcher under supervision of Prof. Ozlem Aydin Civi. Guided the MEMS design, fabricated, and packaged a GHz frequency tunable, microstrip patch antenna. Guided the design, fabricated, and packaged a GHz and GHz dual frequency, tunable rectangular slot antenna.
4 Jun Dec Project name: Design and Production of Novel Multi-function Reconfigurable Antenna/Antenna Arrays by Micromachining Technology. Budget: $100k, funded by Turkish State Planning Organization (DPT). Position: Senior researcher under supervision of Prof. Ozlem Aydin Civi. Guided the MEMS design, fabricated, and packaged 6.5 and 8.5 GHz reconfigurable, monolithic, dual-frequency microstrip patch antenna. Guided the MEMS design, fabricated RF MEMS switches, and packaged 1.8, 1.9, and 2.4 GHz reconfigurable, hybrid, triple-frequency microstrip patch antenna. Development of the 2 nd Generation METU RF MEMS Fabrication Process. Mar Mar Project name: Development of RF Components with MEMS Technology (101E023). Budget: $120k, funded by TUBITAK. Position: Researcher under supervision of Prof. Sencer Koc. Design, fabrication, and measurement of RF MEMS switches and impedance tuners for 1-20 GHz band. Development of the 1 st generation METU RF MEMS Fabrication Process. Research Skills Cleanroom Testing / Metrology Design and Modeling Lithography: Contact lithography (with several contact aligners), laser direct writing (both wafer and mask processing), steppers (user level), e-beam lithography (user level). Metal deposition: DC/RF sputtering (Au, Cu, Ti, Al, Cr, TaN, SiCr), thermal and e-beam evaporation (Au, Cu, Ti, Al, Cr) and electroplating (Au, Cu, Ni). Used several tools.
