St. John Baptist de La Salle Our school is an idea of the heart. While the day to day and hour to hour is comprised of Six-Week Terms and Seven Period days with state-mandated curricula, what happens in the classrooms and hallways of De La Salle North Catholic is only partly regulated by those structures. The what may be defined by outside rules, the how is something quite special to our school something regulated by the pulse of our communal heart. Every class opens with a teacher or a student calling us to Remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God and exhorting Jesus to live in our hearts forever. These words are but a small part of our adult community embracing students your child or children entrusted to our care. The Lasallian words entrusted, care, touch the hearts, salvation of souls are not found in educational journals or schools of education. Three hundred years ago, St. La Salle spoke these words to his young Brothers, reminded them that teaching the young is an act of Faith and succeeds because of one s Zeal. Today, we cannot separate what we do from how we do it our building of relationships, our excellence in instruction, and our commitment to your children is all one method of how we do our work and flows through the veins of all school operations. As you know, our students Enter to Learn, and Leave to Serve. Our capacity to love our students, to help them reach spiritual, academic, athletic, and professional heights springs from our own community of love and trust. One need only recall our Lasallian prayer: Live, Jesus, in our hearts... Forever. 11/22 SOPHOMORE RETREAT Tim Joy Principal

2 2 Knightly Informer April 2013 SOMEONE IN THEIR CORNER By rabzam special correspondent to the Knightly Informer All juniors have someone in their corner an advisor. The junior level team has again divided the 11-grade students into group with each teacher responsible for the academic advising about of about 14 students. (Students were sorted and assigned to a specific advisor based on the student s last name.) Each group of students met with their advisor for a pizza lunch on October 1 to discuss the program which is different from anything they did in past years. The junior level team hopes to have periodic meetings with students throughout the year. I enjoyed the relationship I had with my advisee s last year, says Polly Wiebel, who was also on the 11 th grade team last year. I was able to develop a relationship with the parents of my advisees and really help both the parents and the student. It was a great opportunity to be with the students in a more relaxed setting. The parents appreciated having the constant communication from only one source. Junior parents have all been informed as to which of the junior level teachers are their child s key contact person. With this system in place, parents can contact just one teacher when they have a concern or question. From the school side, teachers and administrators know who to contact when there is an issue or potential issue with a student. And, students know that there is some teacher who has their back. It s nice to know that someone is in my corner, says Gabriel Guttierez a current junior. rabzam aka Rabbi Brian Mayer is Math Instructor and Common Ground group advisor. CONSTITUTION TEAM The De La Salle Constitution Team is up and running. This year we have about 35 students involved and the team is divided into 6 Units each studying a part of the U.S. Constitution. This Fall students will prepare themselves within their Unit and then in January they will compete at Lake Oswego High School against other teams from our District. These include Grant High School who won last year's National Championship. Constitution team members Olesya, Katrina, Enat, Hannah, Nikolas and Joseph met Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recently at University of Portland The Knightly Informer Publication of De La Salle North Catholic High School Portland, OR Available online at: Submission deadline: Last Friday of the prior month. Send to Our Constitution Team is fortunate to have Judges and Attorneys from Portland coaching our Unit Teams. They include: Hillary Taylor, Jim Westwood, Virginia Van Vactor, Thom Brown, Steve Griffith, Will Pattersen, our own Kevin Clark, Robert Weaver, Gary Scharff and myself. We look forward to a great fall season and an excellent result at Lake Oswego. It is alot of hard work but so far I have been impressed with the commitment and energy from our team members. Edward Zupcic, is Social Science Instructor, National Honor Society and Constitution Team advisor.
