Hitachi Cloud Service for Content Archiving delivers lower costs and simplified management by out-tasking management of fast-growing and aging data assets. Designed as an HDS hybrid content cloud, the service uses the same proven and reliable HDS infrastructure products that support our private infrastructure cloud solutions for customers and cloud service providers around the world. The service is managed, operated and supported by HDS, and it provides enterprises with the reliability and integrity they expect from HDS. The explosive growth of data is adding complexity and expense to most IT environments. The bulk of today s data growth comes from unstructured data, such as business documents, files, computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing and Web content. In an effort to store, process, optimize and serve this information back to end users, many organizations have built large network attached storage (NAS) environments. These sprawling environments require continual storage investments. They are costly to manage and rob resources needed for an organization s most valuable data. 2 SOLUTION PROFILE HITACHI CLOUD SERVICES Hitachi Cloud Services deliver an enterprise-level hybrid and enterprise-to-cloud solution owned by Hitachi Data Systems. An enterprise-to-cloud solution is a combination of both Hitachi Cloud Services off site and cloud on-ramp technology on site. Cloud on-ramps are critical as they connect the private enterprise IT to the external public cloud service, mitigating risk while delivering the benefits of public cloud. The cloud on-ramps support key enterprise IT functions, including archiving, backup and tiering. Our solution covers all cloud delivery models and provides a set of cloud storage services as well as REST API support for enterprise applications. We maintain your data remotely using our hardware, software and personnel, while you retain easy access to the data, regardless of user location. Our fully managed cloud services include steps to: Provide an object storage solution that enables you to store, share, protect, preserve, analyze and retrieve file data from an enterprise-level cloud platform. Move content from on-site primary stores into off-site cloud storage. Store copies of files remotely in a secure facility, reducing backup. Monitor consumption and availability, addressing any issues before they impact service level agreements (SLAs). Allow versioning on files returned to the cloud with changes. Enable on-demand capacity requests and pay-as-you-go pricing. Adhere to efficient management practices that keep prices low. Provide write once, read many (WORM) functionality for data retention enforcement and compliance. Customization options will expand in the future to include compute and analytics capabilities. Use Case #1: Streamline File Tiering to Increase Performance and Production Time Much of the data residing on expensive primary storage goes untouched after 3 to 6 months. However, it often remains in place much longer because of the time and difficulty involved in cataloging it and either deleting or moving it, depending on its compliance profile. This inactive data consumes costly capacity and can impact performance. In the event of an outage, businesses must restore massive amounts of content that may not be critical. This poses a threat to recovery time objectives and business continuity. Without an alternative storage solution, storage growth forces businesses to purchase and support additional NAS platforms. This adds to the data center footprint and to the resources required to oversee an increasingly complex storage environment. Storage growth can overwhelm the ability of backup systems to collect all data within the available backup window. A failure to achieve full protection within a backup window can put SLAs at risk, result in lost datasets, and add weeks to a project.

File Tiering Solution With a file tiering solution from Hitachi Cloud Service for Content Archiving, you gain a simple and effective way to reduce content on primary NAS (see Figure 2). You can delay the purchase of additional Tier 1 storage by tiering infrequently accessed files to the Hitachi cloud or migrating them to various on-premises tiers. Storing data on the most cost-effective tier decreases your total cost of storage ownership by at least 25%. Our solution lets you develop a holistic tiering strategy that classifies your data to allow automated, policy-based data movement and management. Because you have less data to back up on site, you gain back production time and can meet SLAs for decreased recovery time in the event of an outage. Our integrated service offering helps you: Identify old or inactive data and move it off Tier 1 storage to a core repository. Use Case #2: Simplify the Delivery of File Services to Satellite Offices Providing file services to remote and branch offices is a time-consuming and expensive undertaking that requires backup of all edge devices to a disaster recovery site and constant management of storage system capacity, utilization and performance. Remote offices need a NAS system for their own files, and they rely on the home office for version control, security and quick and easy access to shared network files. As data volumes increase at the edge, enterprises struggle to budget for more storage hardware and a bigger data center footprint. Our integrated service offering helps you: Improve content sharing between sites (one namespace for multiple file systems, but only one system that can write to the namespace). Automatically move content into the core infrastructure to provide seemingly endless storage capacity at the edge. Keep at the edge only those files that are unique to each remote locale for shorter backup windows and less management overhead. Cache recently used files at the edge to meet low-latency SLAs. Ensure access to the latest version of a document. Give authenticated users a familiar way to interact with storage, regardless of location. Use Case #3: Reduce Application Storage Requirements, Eliminate SharePoint Sprawl Exponential growth of data, particularly unstructured data, is driving up costs and creating unprecedented complexities and risks. To improve management of unstructured data, HDS provides cost-effective strategies for archiving unstructured data. By archiving and reducing the load on primary storage, organizations can improve data governance, limit storage sprawl, and reduce overall storage costs by more than 25%. Depending on the specific needs of your business, you can combine Hitachi Cloud Service for Content Archiving with a variety of applications and archiving software to tier data based on its value. The popularity of Microsoft SharePoint for creating, managing and sharing content is a major contributor to the growth of unstructured data in enterprise storage environments. Adding instances of SharePoint can overwhelm Microsoft SQL Server and lead to a sprawling SharePoint environment. When you archive content to the Hitachi cloud, a pointer remains behind to give users a familiar way to retrieve documents. A buildup of binary large objects (BLOBs), which constitute unstructured data, often causes performance to degrade in large SharePoint deployments and untenable backup and restore times. This leads to slower document query and retrieval, and an accompanying loss of productivity. Solving these issues by adding SQL hardware and software licenses increases total cost of ownership.
