5 ISIE Message from the General Co-Chairs On behalf of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, we are pleased and honored to welcome you to the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics ISIE2007, in Vigo, Spain, June 4 to 7, The Symposium is being held at the Centro Cultural and the Centro Social Caixanova, two magnificent buildings conveniently located in downtown Vigo. We gratefully acknowledge Caixanova for providing us with such nice venues for the conference. ISIE2007 is technically co-sponsored by the University of Vigo and the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers of Japan (SICE). Major supporters include the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science and the European Union s FEDER regional development funds, the City Council of Vigo, the Galician government and the Pontevedra Provincial Council. Grateful acknowledgment is also due to Vitrasa, which provides all ISIE2007 participants with free access to Vigo s city bus service. Message from the Technical Program Co-Chairs We have been honored to serve as Technical Program Co-Chairs for the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics ISIE2007. With nearly 1000 high-quality submitted papers (300 to Special Sessions) coming from 62 countries worldwide, it is the largest of all ISIE editions held up to now. Track Chairs, Special Session Chairs and Special Session organizers have coordinated the work of some 1500 reviewers. On average, more than 2.8 reviews were performed on each submitted paper. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to authors and, specially, to all volunteers who have supported and conducted such a huge amount of work. Their timely and excellent response has been fundamental for the quality of the technical program. Special thanks are due to the members of the IES Web and Information Committee and IT Co-Chairs for the conference, Dr. Andres A. Nogueiras, Dr. Antonio Luque and Dr. Aleksander Malinowski. Without the excellent services that they are continuously developing for the IES community, the set up of such a large conference would have been impossible. 610 excellent papers have been carefully selected for presentation at the Symposium, covering all currently significant fields of Industrial Electronics and related areas. They are organized in regular sessions, corresponding to seven Technical Tracks (Control Systems and Applications, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives, Sensors and Actuators, Signal and Image Processing, Industrial Informatics and Mechatronics and Robotics), and in 22 Special Sessions. The final program consists of 68 oral sessions (of which 40 correspond to Special Sessions), 28 dialogue sessions (of which 4 correspond to Special Sessions), 2 plenary sessions and 3 panels. In addition, the Tutorials Chairs have selected 8 excellent topics to be lectured during the conference. Moreover, 2 tutorials specifically devoted to students and a Students Forum will also take place. We are confident that all participants will find the technical activities of the Symposium to be intellectually stimulating. In addition, June afternoons in Vigo are wonderful, with many daylight hours and mild temperatures, so you will have enough time after the sessions to relax, meet old colleagues, find new friends, and enjoy the city. 15 ISIE General Information Location ISIE 2007 will be held in the Centro Cultural and Centro Social Caixanova from June 4 to June 7, Centro Cultural Caixanova is located at 13 Policarpo Sanz Street and Centro Social Caixanova at Policarpo Sanz Street. The two buildings are at walking distance. A general overview of the buildings and the internal distribution of rooms may be found herewith. Registration Desk The registration desk will be located in the main hall of the Centro Cultural Caixanova. It will be open on: Sunday, June 3 th, 2007 from 18:00 to 20:00 Monday, June 4 th, 2007 from 08:30 to 18:00 Tuesday, June 5 th, 2007 from 08:30 to 18:00 Wednesday, June 6 th, 2007 from 08:30 to 18:00 Thursday, June 7 th, 2007 from 08:30 to 13:30 Lunches Two locations will be available to get lunch from Monday 4 th to Wednesday 6 th, Circulo Cultural Mercantil and Centro Social Caixanova. Each participant will receive three tickets one per day indicating the corresponding place. Circulo Cultural Mercantil is located at 44 Principe Street. Lunch time is from 13:30 to 15:00. Transportation Public bus transportation in Vigo will be offered for free to registered participants, courtesy of Vitrasa. They only have to show their badges to bus drivers. Gala Dinner The gala dinner will take place on Wednesday, June 6 th, 2007 at Las Siete Torres restaurant 103 Av. de Galicia. Tel.: from 20:30 to 23:30. Students' Welcome Party and Banquet A welcome reception party and banquet will be offered to registered students and to the Student Forum participants on Tuesday, June 5 th, 2007 from 18:30 to 20:00, at Dolce Vita 23 Plaza de Compostela. Travel Grants will be given to awarded students during the banquet. Instructions for Chairs of sessions A volunteer from the organizing committee will be present during the whole session to assist session chairs. In order for the conference to run smoothly, session chairs are kindly asked to make the schedule to be strictly respected. An evaluation form has to be filled for each session, either oral or dialogue, by the session chairs. They are kindly asked to give it to the assistant volunteer or to leave it at the registration desk. Oral Sessions All rooms will be equipped with a computer, a video projector and a screen. Presentations must be downloaded to the computer before the session starts. Authors have been asked to meet session chairs at the session room 15 minutes before the beginning of the session and to provide them with their presentations (in PowerPoint or PDF) and short bios. The length of oral presentations is restricted to 20 minutes, including questions. The authors have been strongly advised to keep their oral presentation within 15 minutes and to let 5 minutes for discussion with the audience. Session chairs are kindly asked to make authors to strictly respect the schedule. In case of no show, the session must be either suspended until the time the next paper is scheduled, or closed if there are no more papers in the session. 6

17 ISIE Dialogue Sessions At the beginning of the session, each author will have 2-3 minutes available to briefly describe to the audience the main objectives, accomplishments and conclusions of their work. After that, the session chairs must promote interaction among authors and attendees. Instruction for presenters of papers Oral sessions Authors are kindly requested to meet their session co-chairs in the session room 15 minutes before the scheduled time in order to download their presentation to the computer. They have to provide the co-chairs with a PowerPoint or PDF presentation, as well as a short (10-line maximum) printed bio. Authors must assure that all fonts needed are embedded in their presentation files. The files can be downloaded to the computer from a USB key or a CD-ROM. The use of the author s computer will not be allowed, in order for sessions to run smoothly. The length of the presentation is restricted to 20 minutes, including questions. The authors are strongly advised to keep their oral presentation within 15 minutes (about 15 slides) and to let 5 minutes for discussion with the audience. Dialogue sessions Authors will have 2-3 minutes available to briefly describe to the audience the main objectives, accomplishments and conclusions of their work. After that, interaction will be promoted by session chairs among authors and attendees. Discussions will be supported by posters, which the authors should bring to the room 10 minutes before the session schedule. Please note that no electronic means will be available for the oral introductory part of the presentation. A poster preparation is a difficult but rather interesting exercise. It is not allowed to simply pin up a plain copy of the published paper. The advised maximum size is A0 (119 cm height, 84 cm width). Please do remain in these dimensions or around. A poster display will catch the eye of the viewer (large, significant figures), present a logical sequence of materials in an attractive visual way and should not require from the reader to examine a detailed text. Each poster will be hanged by the presenters using material provided by conference organizers 10 minutes before the session. Posters must be removed in the last 10 7

Ibáñez is Deputy Head of the Microsystems unit of the European ICT (Information and Communicatin Technologies) Research Programme. He holds a university degree on solid-state physics (UAM), and post-graduate diplomas on communication and signal processing (ETSIT, Madrid), business administration (UCLouvain) and in Information Society and Knowledge (UOC). Prior to joining the European Commission, he was active in semiconductor research (UAM, Bell Labs) and had a number of industrial assignments, including manufacturing and product engineering in microelectronics design and fabrication (AT&T Microelectronics/ Lucent Technologies). 9

Plenary Sessions Wednesday 6 th of June Plenary 2: Photovoltaics: The Construction of a New Industrial Sector Chair Javier Uceda, Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain Speaker Antonio Luque, Instituto de Energía Solar (IES), Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain Room / Time A1 - Theater (Centro Cultural Caixanova) 08:30 to 09:40 Speaker Biography Prof. Antonio Luque received the Dr. Eng. degree in Telecommunication in He has been Full Professor of electronic technology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain, since He has led the Instituto de Energía Solar, he founded in His research activity is mainly devoted to the photovoltaic conversion of solar energy. He invented the bifacial cell in This cell was fabricated by Isofotón, a company he created in 1982, today present in more than 50 countries. More recently he has proposed the new intermediate band solar cell -a concept that might overcome the fundamental efficiency limitations of conventional solar cells- and is working in demonstrating this concept experimentally. He has published more than 250 scientific papers in English language as well as some books, and holds 13 patents. Prof. Luque received the Spanish National Prize for Technology in 1989, granted by the King of Spain, the Alexander-Edmond Becquerel Prize in PV research, granted by the EC, in 1992, the William Cherry Prize, granted by the IEEE in 2006, also for PV research, the King James I award to environmental research granted by the Crown Price in 1999 and the awards Torres Quevedo and Juan de la Cierva. He belongs to the Academies of Engineering of Spain, Rusia and Bielorussia and is Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universities of Jaén and Carlos III of Madrid and Member of Honour of the Ioffe Institute in St. Petersbourg. 10
