2 Vision For The Future Goals/ Objectives for 2018 and Improve the existing ACE service between Stockton and San Jose with added frequencies, reduced travel time, and improved service reliability. Current, Extend service to additional Central Valley communities downtown Modesto in the near term and downtown Merced subsequently 3. Integrate ACE into a unified northern California Rail service extending to and connecting with the high-speed rail system 5-Year Plan Year Plan Provide connectivity and accessibility to Oakland and Oakland International Airport; maximize intermodal connections with other rail services including BART 5. Enhance the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley and Bay Area by providing an alternative to the automobile to relieve congestion along I-580, I-680, I-205 and SR-99 and reduce greenhouse gases Planning Principles Make improvements to existing route shared with freight traffic to provide cost-effective solutions to enhance and expand service Identify a menu of improvements and phase investments over time to allow for continual improvement Develop new dedicated passenger corridor and/or track where feasible and cost-effective Support emerging smart communities strategies in the San Joaquin Valley by developing downtown stations Maximize opportunities for connectivity to rail and other public transport modes

5 ACEforward More Reliable, Safer, Faster, and Nicer Each train will have wifi and Cafe/ food service! (As early as 2014!) New trains with top speed of mph, a streamlined route, and safety improvements such as separate grade crossings, will translate into improved travel time New equipment s performance would not be affected by train length ACEforward 2018/2022 Potential Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) Expanding ACE service will keep cars from clogging the increasingly burdened roadways and will help keep our skies blue: Upping ACE service to 6 round-trip trains translates to a 50% increase in capacity which is expected to be million riders a year by : approx. 69,000,000 lbs or 34,500 MT CO 2 not emitted 10 round-trip trains to serve ACE = 150% increase in capacity expected to be million riders a year by : approx. 115,000,000 lbs or 57,400 MT CO 2 not emitted ACEforward projected Riding Times ACEforward ACE ACEforward ACE ACEforward ACE ACEforward ACE ACEforward From/ To Merced Turlock Modesto Stockton Stockton Turlock 0:30 Modesto 0:45 0:15 Stockton 1:30 1:00 0:45 Lathrop/ Manteca 1:10 0:40 0:25 0:24 0:20 Lathrop/ Manteca Lathrop/ Manteca Pleasanton 1:55 1:25 1:10 1:13 1:05 0:55 0:45 Pleasanton Pleasanton 2:25 1:55 1:40 1:58 1:35 1:34 1:15 0:39 0:30 San Jose 2:35 2:05 1:50 2:12 1:45 1:48 1:25 0:53 0:40 0:14 0:10 ACEforward times in italics are estimates rounded to the nearest 5 minutes, assuming a 20% reduction in travel times throughout the existing corridor; however, improvements may only be realized in portions of the corridor. The extension to Modesto and Merced assumes a 50-mph travel speed on new track within the existing UPRR Fresno Subdivision right-of-way. Everything in life depends on a good connection.

6 Improvement Examples Siding extensions accommodate longer freight trains, allowing ACE to pass by on the main track (such as on the right) without delay ACEforward improvements will address pinch points such as this one in the Alviso wetlands, where tracks are shared with two Amtrak lines and freight operations With sidings and double tracking, ACE can pass other trains keeping ACE on time and allowing for an expanded schedule Station improvements will expand capacity and enhance passenger amenities Trackwork modifications or new alignments are proposed to replace track sections with tight curves that slow ACE down Grade separations such as this one in Livermore will allow ACE to operate at faster speeds and remove delays to crossing traffic, while offering safety and noise reduction benefits

7 Comment Station Your input is important to us! Please provide your scoping comments On the ACEforward program via comment card or via the website.
