2 Why do I need insurance? In accordance with SUNY mandate, all students participating in study abroad/exchange programs affiliated with SUNY are required to be adequately insured. The campus that administers the study abroad program also administers the insurance programs for participants.

3 How can I be considered adequately insured? You must have comprehensive insurance coverage AND additional coverage for Medical Evacuation and Repatriation that will directly pay benefits to providers abroad There are two ways to be considered adequately insured for a UB Study Abroad Program.

4 I have insurance with international coverage. In order to receive a waiver, you must have coverage that will directly pay benefits to providers abroad You must purchase a rider (MEDEX) for Medical Evacuation and Repatriation coverage through the Student Medical Insurance Office ($7.40/month)

5 I don t have insurance. Or you have insurance that will not directly cover you abroad (Medicaid plans, Fidelis, etc.) You can purchase the SUNY International Insurance plan ($40.79/month) Medical Evacuation and Repatriation coverage is included.

6 What is medical evacuation and repatriation coverage? Medical Evacuation benefits provide for arrangement and payment of travel and medical costs in the event of serious injury or illness. Repatriation benefits cover expenses related to the appropriate preparation and return of remains to the family in the event of death abroad.

7 Medical Evacuation and Repatriation It is mandatory that all Study Abroad students carry medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. MEDEX also provides assistance with lost or stolen travel documents, referrals to doctors, translators, legal advice and many other services.

8 How do I get enrollment applications? Forms available online at: Packets are also ed PDF in routine reminders. These are sent to the you provided to the Study Abroad Office for your contact. Packets include instructions, advice and applications.

9 How do I enroll? Waiver of SUNY Full International Coverage Liability Waive Form for SUNY required documentation. MEDEX Enrollment form for evacuation and repatriation coverage. Clarification of benefits form completed by your insurance company Purchase of Full SUNY International Coverage HTH Enrollment Form to purchase the full International Insurance plan. Premium must be charged to your Student Account if you re a registered student at UB. Otherwise, payment can be made via cash, check, or money order

10 When are applications due? All insurance information MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE YOU DEPART! Failure to comply results in the student being enrolled in and charged for the full international insurance plan for the duration of your trip. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made to this policy.

12 Some Advice Many private insurance companies only extend minimal coverage to you once you leave the U.S. You will need to contact your insurance company and ask if you have direct benefits abroad. Paying out-of-pocket and seeking reimbursement is NOT considered adequately insured.

13 Returning to UB If you will be returning to UB as a full time student after study abroad, you will be charged for the Domestic Student Insurance in the Fall Semester. If you do not need the UB insurance plan, you must submit a waiver with proof of insurance to the Student Medical Insurance Office when you return. Waivers must be received by the due date of your first tuition bill.
