4 Zurich & IBM care for communities The Zurich Flood Resilience Program aims to enhance community resilience to flooding through an innovative multi-sector alliance. This comprises the private sector, academia and the humanitarian/development sector. The IBM Corporate Service Corps was launched in 2008 to help communities around the world solve critical problems. By sending groups of individuals from different countries for community-based assignments in emerging markets, the program has helped over 140,000 people since its inception. A community may be defined in many ways: in a rural context it may be limited by geographical boundaries; in an urban area by administrative ones. 3

5 Flood resilience is one of Zurich s key focus areas Floods affect more people than any other types of natural disaster Thought Leadership As insurers we know the impact they have on people s lives and how much damage they can cause The flood resilience program is an alliance of 5 organizations Catalyzer The program comprises a five-year commitment, and includes an initial investment of USD 35.6 million by the Z Zurich Foundation Global Reach Innovation Together we focus on pre-event flood mitigation, as opposed to post-event flood relief 4

8 Why IBM? The drive to approach IBM comes from moving from developing a theoretical framework to testing whether it works in real communities. To be able to gather data consistently enables us to draw lessons from it which validates our approach. We therefore needed an IT solution that we could use with all our NGO partners across communities ranging from the US to Timor-Leste to bring this data to our researchers. 7
