1 PI: Lisa Cacari-Stone, PhD Funder: Santa Fe Community Foundation Project Title: Evaluating Health Equity in New Mexico Project Dates: May, 20, 2013 to May 31, 2015 Project Description: This project will provide coaching and consulting to New Mexico Health Equity Partnership to improve the capacity of local communities to address social, economic and environmental conditions that negatively affect health. Consulting will include coaching NMHEP staff to conduct a participatory evaluation, focusing on big-picture inputs, processes and outcomes that enable health and well-being and advance health equity. An evaluation team will be established, and logic model and evaluation tools will be developed. Training in data collection and analysis will be provided. PI: Alexis Handal, PhD ajhandal@salud.unm.edu Funder: UNM HSC Signature Program in Environmental Health Services Project Title: Impact of Maternal Work in the Ecuadorian Flower Industry on Infant Development: Qualitative Analysis of Participants Experiences and Perceptions Project Dates: July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 Project Description: This project will continue analysis of qualitative data collected to investigate the possible adverse effects of maternal employment in the flower industry in Ecuador on the neurodevelopment of young children. The results of the analysis will guide the study team in the refinement of future quantitative instruments and the development of more appropriate and relevant interventions in the community. PI: Deborah Helitzer, ScD helitzer@salud.unm.edu Funder: University of Texas at Tyler Project Title: Evaluation Core of the SW Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention and Education Project Dates: September 28, 2014 to September 14, 2014 Project Description: Implement a process and outcome evaluation to assess the degree to which SW Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention and Education Is achieving its goals and objectives. 1

2 PI: Jennifer Hettema, PhD Funder: National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Project Title: Mentored Research on Improving Alcohol Brief Interventions in Medical Settings Project Dates: April 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016 Project Description: This project will systematically evaluate the impact of brief intervention components on risky drinking behavior among primary care patients and use this information to develop and pilot test an empirically informed brief intervention. This study holds the promise to improve treatment effectiveness for the nation s more than sixteen million risky drinkers. PI: Jennifer Hettema, PhD Funder: National Institutes of Health Project Title: Meta-Regression to Identify the Impact of SBIRT Structure and Content on Outcome Project Dates: February 1, 2015 to January 31, 2017 Project Description: This project will use meta-regression to determine the impact of screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment content and structure on drinking outcome. This study takes advantage of previous investments in brief intervention research and holds the promise to improve treatment effectiveness for the nation s more than 38 million risky drinkers. Lesson learned will allow us to more effectively and efficiently train providers to implement SBIRT. PI: Miria Kano, PhD MKano@salud.unm.edu Funder: NIH/National Institutes of Health, NM CARES HD - Pilot Research Projects Project Title: Cancer Survivorship Care Project Dates: September 25, 2014 to September 24, 2015 Project Description: The Cancer Survivorship Care is a pilot project with the NM Cares HD, a health disparities Center of Excellence based at UNM. The project aims to eliminate disparities in care for Hispanic and rural underserved endometrial cancer survivors. PI: Julie Lucero, PhD jelucero@salud.unm.edu Funder: Santa Clara Pueblo Project Title: Khapoo Owinge RezRIDERS Project Project Dates: September 1, 2014 to August 30, 2015 Project Description: Provide training modules on Motivational Interviewing, Evaluation and Research, Community-based Participatory Research, Research Ethics, and Conflict Mediation. 2

3 PI: Julie Lucero, PhD Funder: National Congress of American Indians Project Title: Native American Research Centers for Health VII NCAI with UNM: Community Based Participatory Research Dissemination Project Dates: September 15, 2014 to September 14, 2015 Project Description: The goal of the grant is to utilize participatory research methods to enhance our understanding of the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences among American Indians, ACE association with health, behavioral and social problems in adulthood, and the protective effect of resiliency factors upon these deleterious health outcomes among American Indian adults. PI: Tassy Parker, PhD Funder: Albuquerque Area Indian Health Board, Inc. Project Title: Tribal Solutions for Native Youth Affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences Project Dates: February 14, 2014 to September 14, 2015 Project Description: The goal of this project is to design and implement a culturally appropriate intervention that will improve the health and well-being of Native youth affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). PI: Tassy Parker, PhD Funder: University of Wisconsin Project Title: Healthy Children, Strong Families: American Indian Communities Preventing Obesity Project Dates: May 1, 2014 to April 30, 2015 Project Description: This project addresses American Indian health issues and disparities, specifically historical trauma, depression and culturally centered care and obesity prevention. PI: Tassy Parker, PhD Funder: Albuquerque Area Indian Health Board Project Title: Enhancing Molina Healthcare Services for American Indians in New Mexico Project Dates: June 15, 2015 to June 14, 2016 Project Description: This project focuses on enhancing services to American Indians in tribal and off-reservation communities across the state, in order to establish Molina Healthcare of New Mexico as a national model for engaging Indigenous populations in understanding health care options. 3

4 PI: Valerie Romero-Leggott, MD Funder: Health and Human Services/Health Resources and Services Administration Project Title: Health Career Opportunity Program Project Dates: September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015 Project Description: Dream Makers (DM) Health Careers Programs (primarily middle school program and several more robust programs at the high school level) are hands-on, after-school, academic year programs to 1) increase math and science skills 2) promote awareness about students cultural identity and the assets of home, 3) stimulate interest in the health professions, 4) increase awareness of the shortage of healthcare workers in NM, and 5) provide students with information about healthy behaviors and convey it to their families. PI: Helene Silverblatt, PhD Funder: HHS / Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Project Title: New Mexico Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Project Dates: September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2017 Project Description: Develop and implement strategies to foster and provide community-based training and education to individuals seeking careers in health professions within underserved areas for the purpose of developing and maintaining a diverse health care workforce that is prepared to deliver highquality care, with an emphasis on primary care, in underserved areas or for health disparity populations, in collaboration with other Federal and State health care workforce development programs, the State workforce agency, local workforce investment boards, and in health care safety-net sites. PI: Andrew Sussman, PhD asussman@salud.unm.edu Funder: NIH/National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Project Title: Partnerships to Reduce Disparities in Substance Use Screening and Treatment Project Project Dates: February 1, 2014 to January 31, 2016 Project Description: The goal of this project is to use what we learn about reducing disparities and working with primary practices within New Mexican communities to develop ways to improve the delivery of screening and treatment services. These approaches will be flexible and take into account different cultural views about appropriate ways to address these problems. This project is conducted through the New Mexico Center for Advancement of Research, Engagement & Science on Health Disparities. 4

5 PI: Kristine Tollestrup, PhD Funder: HHS / Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Project Title: New Mexico Public Health Traineeships in Epidemiology Project Dates: September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2017 Project Description: The Maternal and Child Health - Training Institute (MCH-TI) will include an initial assessment of the needs of the New Mexico MCH workforce, the provision of a certificate program that is tailored to the needs of the trainees, an ongoing evaluation of the trainings and the completion of collaborative projects with other MCH agencies and professionals by the trainees. The MCH-TI will provide several kinds of trainings for rural and isolated MCH professionals that will result in a MCH Public Health graduate certificate. PI: Kristine Tollestrup, PhD Funder: UNM Signature Program in Child Health Research Project Title: Healthy Futures for Adolescent Parents Project Dates: July 15, 2014 to June 30, 2015 Project Description: The purpose of the study is to engage teen parents in the development of questions for the Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (YRRS) and to design an approach to educating students and school staff about state excused absence policy for middle and high school students who are expecting or parenting a child. PI: Nina Wallerstein, PhD nwallerstein@salud.unm.edu Funder: Health Native Community Partnership Project Title: Oversee the Participatory Evaluation Design for the Multi-Sector Leadership Program Project Dates: September 14, 2014 to September 30, 2015 Project Description: To outline a multi-level, mixed methods community-based participatory evaluation using Re-AIM Framework, focused on Reach and Effectiveness of the Multi-Sector Leadership Program across levels. Assess the core elements of the multi-sector leadership program Theory of Change and integrate the appropriate methods, measures, and indicators from the ten-year HNCF design. 5

6 PI: Robert Williams, MD Funder: NIH/National Institutes of Health Project Title: Stereo-typing in Medical Student Decision Making: presence, Origins and Solutions Project Dates: August 1, 2012 to July 31, 2015 Project Description: The overall goal of this study is to reduce health disparities by focusing on an understudied social determinant of health: racial and gender-based stereotyping and bias in medical decision-making. We will examine the role of admissions and training of medical students to identify contributors to reinforcement/formation/reduction of such stereotypes and to develop recommendations for medical educators to reduce or eliminate such bias in medical decision-making. PI: Robert Williams, MD Funder: Virginia Commonwealth University Project Title: Implementing Personal Health Records to Promote Evidence-based Cancer Screening Project Dates: August 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015 Project Description: The NM CARES HD, a health disparities Center of Excellence based at UNM, focuses on an understudied social determinant of health: racial- and gender-based stereotyping and bias in medical decision-making. PI: Robert Williams, MD Funder: NIH/National Institutes of Health Project Title: NM CARES HD - Pilot Research Projects Project Dates: September 25, 2014 to September 24, 2015 Project Description: NM Cares HD, a health disparities Center of Excellence based at UNM, will conduct a set of three pilot projects building on concepts of community-partnered interventions to eliminate disparities. Projects aim at eliminating disparities in access to care and insurance coverage among Hispanics, in early child development and school readiness among low-income Hispanics, and in care for Hispanic and rural underserved endometrial cancer survivors. Each project creates a foundation for future research on interventions to eliminate disparities. 6
