2 Sen. Doc. No ACADEMIC MATTERS COUNCIL The Department of Nutrition is proposing an accelerated option for its Master s degree program. Students in any of the three undergraduate tracks in the Nutrition major would be eligible for the accelerated option. Depending on the track, the accelerated option calls for students to take three or four credits of graduate coursework while they are undergraduates, with those credits applied to the Masters program. The proposed option assumes a -credit Masters program, while program currently requires 6 credits. A proposal to reduce the number of credits for the Master s degree to has been submitted. The Program Subcommittee recommends approval of the proposed accelerated option once the change to the Master s degree program has been approved. At its meeting on October 2, 205, the Academic Matters Council voted unanimously to recommend Faculty Senate approval of the Accelerated Master s Program in Nutrition, submitted as proposal #25 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. GRADUATE COUNCIL The Academic Standards and Curriculum Committee (ASCC) of the Graduate Council met on October 7, 205 and reviewed the proposal for an Accelerated Master s Program in Nutrition, proposal # 25 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. On Wednesday, October, 205, the Graduate Council unanimously approved the Accelerated Master s Program in Nutrition. PROGRAM AND BUDGET COUNCIL The Program Subcommittee of the Program and Budget Council met on October, 205, reviewed the Accelerated Master s Program in Nutrition and recommended it for approval. At its meeting on Wednesday, October 2, 205, the Program and Budget Council voted to unanimously approve the Accelerated Master s Program in Nutrition. It was submitted as proposal #25 in the Course and Curriculum Management System. MOVED: That the Faculty Senate approve the Accelerated Master s Program in Nutrition, as 07-6 presented in Sen. Doc. 3 Proposal Development Sen. Doc. No A. Briefly describe the Proposal. The Department of Nutrition is proposing that we develop an accelerated Master s degree program and make it available to undergraduates in the Department of Nutrition who are following any of the three bachelors degree in Human Nutrition tracks (Dietetics, Nutrition and Health Science, Nutrition in a Global Society). B. Provide a brief overview of the process for developing the Proposal. The University of Massachusetts Nutrition Department has approximately 00 undergraduate majors. These students are divided into three tracks before graduation: Dietetics, Nutrition and Health Science and Nutrition in a Global Society. Currently about 70% of our students have been accepted into the dietetics track or have expressed an interest in this track. The Dietetics track at the University of Massachusetts is accredited with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Each year approximately 60% of our Dietetics track graduates are accepted into a Dietetic Internship, which is the culminating experience on the way to becoming a Registered Dietitian. The need for an accelerated Master s degree has become a pressing issue because, starting in 202, graduates will have to have a Master s degree in Nutrition to be able to apply to a dietetic internship. While developing the accelerated option for the Dietetics track students we decided to also develop an accelerated Master s option for our other two tracks, as advanced nutrition training is useful for many careers in community nutrition, public health and business. This proposal was developed by committee during the summer of 20. Committee members included the Department head, Graduate Program director, Dietetic Internship director, Undergraduate Program director and Online MPH in Nutrition director. Purpose and Goals Describe the proposal s purpose and the particular knowledge and skills to be acquired and provide a rationale for creating this accelerated degree program. The MS in Nutrition will provide students with the knowledge base and skills to research nutritional problems and to plan community, clinical and individual application of nutrition prevention and treatment at various levels. Studies in the department emphasize cellular and molecular nutrition, nutritional biochemistry and physiology, nutrition education and community and international nutrition. Students may select to participate in one of three Research Clusters: Community-Engaged Nutrition Research Group, Nutrients and Bioactives for Health, and Transitional Nutritional Research Initiative. Through advanced coursework, seminars and presentations in nutrition, biostatistics and epidemiology, students will develop critical thinking, organizational and research design skills related to nutrition science, education and policy. Accelerated Master s Information Does this accelerated master s option apply to all master s degrees in this field, or only to certain tracks or concentrations? The Accelerated Master s option applies to all tracks. What type of degree program does this accelerated master s option pertain to? Note: second and third require separate approval. An existing degree. Comments: The accelerated program pertains to an existing degree, the M.S. degree in Nutrition, which currently has a proposed revision being submitted to the Faculty Senate.

Students can apply to the accelerated masters program in February of their junior year. This means that they will need to complete the GREs in the fall of their junior year. In order to apply students will need to have earned a GPA of at least 2.75 and have completed the following courses: BIOCHEM 20, NUTRITN 20, NUTRITN 52, NUTRITN 9C or concurrent with application), NUTRITN 0 (or concurrent with application), KIN 272, 27, BIO 5, CHEM,2, CHEM 26 or 250. Admission to the Accelerated Master s program will be decided by the Nutrition Department Graduate Admissions Committee. What undergraduate degree program is this accelerated master s associated with, if any? Human Nutrition Resources If this proposal requires no additional resources, say so and briefly explain why. If this proposal requires additional resources, explain how they will be paid for. For proposals involving instruction, indicate how many new enrollments are expected and whether the courses have room to accommodate them. This proposal requires no additional resources, because it uses resources already in existence for the MS in Nutrition. Curriculum Provide a curriculum to the applicable master s degree as it currently appears in the Graduate Bulletin and explain how this curriculum will be scheduled over the student s undergraduate and graduate careers. Note that total number of credits must be 0 plus the minimum number required for undergraduate degree (generally 20, making total number of credits required 50). NOTE: For Master s programs under 6 credits, a maximum of 9 graduate-level credits taken as an undergraduate may be applied to both degrees. For Master s programs over 6 credits, a maximum of 2 graduate-level credits taken as an undergraduate may be applied to both degrees. This MS Degree Program is currently under review by faculty senate and will the applicable masters degree as it will appear in the Graduate Bulletin. Please see attachment to view how the curriculum be scheduled over the student's undergraduate and graduate careers due to formatting requirements of the schedule.
