AGENDA Why Track Building Energy Use? Methods B3 Overview How to use the B3 to Identify Buildings to Save Energy New B3 Features Funded in 2010 copyright 2010 Page 1
P Use? Why Track Building Energy Use? You have heard it before, but is true: You can t manage what you don t measure If you don t know how much energy your building is using you have know idea if it is performing well or not So how do you know if is performing well or not copyright 2010 Page 2
Different Comparison Methods 1. Compare a building to itself over time. 2. Compare a buildings rank within a population of similar building type and location. A Relative comparison typically expressed as a percentile ranking 3. Compare a building to an absolute Energy Use Intensity benchmark of a informed engineering model. Use of a building model set to current practice or base energy code parameters copyright 2010 Page 3
What are Metrics used to Benchmark Buildings? For cars we use: Miles per gallon For lighting efficiency we use: Lumens per Watt For buildings we use: Energy Use Intensity (EUI) typically y expressed in units of Energy consumption per floor area per year In the US we typically express it as Btu / Square Foot / Year copyright 2010 Page 4
What is Energy? compares your building to its expected energy consumption based on its size, weather, activity use, and hours of operation It is a management tool to identify buildings that have higher than expected energy consumption. Buildings with higher than expected energy consumption are the best candidates for low cost - High return on investment improvement projects copyright 2010 Page 5
copyright 2010 Page 6
The goal of is to find the buildings that would best be served by a more rigorous and detailed evaluation. It would identify buildings that could be excellent candidates for: Energy Auditing Recommissioning and Energy Retrofit programs copyright 2010 Page 7
What is Energy Baseline Assessment? Energy Baseline assessment allows you to see which of your buildings are using more or less energy than a previous baseline year. It will focus your attention on energy consumption problems you can fix right away so you can determine what is required to maintain or improve its energy e consumption. o copyright 2010 Page 8
Minnesota B3 Energy Overview Funded by the Minnesota Department of Administration and Commerce A web-based based tool through which building representatives enter facility and meter data to compare their energy consumption Benchmarks designed for public buildings in Minnesota Participant response has been highly positive 5,500 public buildings submitted and tracking data copyright 2010 Page 9
4 Easy Steps 1. Measure Your buildings' current performance. 2. Compare each building's performance to its custom benchmark. 3. Improve the buildings that need the most help. (Low hanging fruit) 4. Manage Your building s continued performance as compared to its past performance. copyright 2010 Page 10
