9 Chapter 1 Installing MSP 3.1 Quick Start This chapter provides a quick overview of the tasks required to successfully install MSP 3.1: For new installations: Install Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 on a computer. Install Microsoft IIS (available on the operating system CD) on that computer. This is not an optional step. For upgrades from MSP 3.0: Create a fresh backup or save your latest backup and/or export your objects. Insure you have the latest released version of MSP Install MSP Server 3.1. Verify that MSP server is running ( To view documentation, Adobe Reader 5.0 or higher must be installed. 10 2 MSP 3.1 Software Installation Guide Introduction Components of MSP The following are components of the Mobility Services Platform version 3.1: MSP Server MSP Server is software that is installed on a Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Professional computer. The majority of the functionality of MSP is provided via this component. This document describes how to install MSP Server MSP Client The MSP 3 client is software that comes pre-installed on certain Motorola mobile devices that performs staging and provisioning functions on the device. Supported mobile devices that do not have the MSP 3 client on them can be upgraded via staging or provisioning, once MSP Server is installed. Relay Servers To achieve the ability to manage large numbers of devices, MSP employs the use of intermediate servers running FTP or secure FTP (FTPS). Any computer or device that functions as an FTP server can be used. FTP server software is not included with MSP but can be installed as part of Windows or obtained from a variety of sources. At least one FTP server must be used for MSP to function. AirBeam Package Builder When software is delivered to a device, it must be contained in a package file. Package files are created using the AirBeam Package Builder program that is included and installed as part of MSP Server. Internet Explorer/MSP Console Access to MSP server console functions is performed via a web browser. Web browsers that have been tested and supported with MSP include Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7. Preparing for Installation of MSP 3.1 This section describes the factors to consider and tasks required to prepare for installing MSP 3.1 server. Hardware Requirements The following are recommended minimum specifications for the computer that you will use to run MSP Server on. These are only recommendations and you may obtain satisfactory performance on computers with a configuration that differs from these specifications.

11 Installing MSP GHz processor 1 GB RAM 40 GB hard drive Note that the perceived performance of MSP Server is affected by many parameters other than the configuration of the computer that it runs on. See the MSP 3.1 User s Guide for more information on factors that can affect MSP performance. Software Requirements The following versions of Windows are supported for running MSP 3.1: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SP1 or above. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP1 or above. Windows Server 2003 Web Edition with SP1 or above. Windows XP Professional SP2 2. Upgrading from MSP 3.0 to MSP 3.1 MSP 3.1 supports upgrading data from MSP 3.0 during the installation process. However it is strongly recommended that prior to installing MSP 3.1, you perform one or both of the following: Create a fresh backup or save your latest backup data from MSP 3.0. See Chapter 5 in the MSP 3.0 User s Guide that came with your MSP 3.0 installation for information on how to do this. Export all objects in XML format so they can be re-imported into MSP 3.1 if needed. See Chapter 6 in the MSP 3.0 User s Guide that came with your MSP 3.0 installation for information on how to do this. Installing Microsoft IIS If you are installing MSP 3 for the first time, insure that you have the Microsoft Internet Information Services component installed on Windows. Use the following steps to install IIS: 1. From the Start menu go to the Control Panel and select Add or Remove Programs. 2. Click the Add/Remove Windows Components tab in the left pane. 3. In the list of Windows Components, select Application Server and click the Details button. 4. In the list of Application Server subcomponents, select Internet Information Services (IIS) and click the Details button. 5. In the list of IIS subcomponents, check the box next to World Wide Web Service and click Details. 6. In the World Wide Web Service list, check the box next to World Wide Web Service and click OK. 7. Click OK on the Application Server dialog and Next on the Windows Components dialog. 2 MSP Server running on Windows XP is intended for use in situations where portability (for example, running on a laptop computer) is needed. Windows XP is not intended as a server operating system and should not be considered for enterprise-grade configurations supporting large numbers of mobile devices.

12 4 MSP 3.1 Software Installation Guide The installation program will prompt you for the Windows CD that was used to install the operating system. Follow the prompts to complete the installation of IIS. 8. Verify that IIS has installed correctly: From the Start menu, go to Administrative Tools. Verify that Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager is listed as one of the Administrative tools. Repairing IIS Mapping After Reinstalling IIS The following error might occur if you reinstall Microsoft IIS because of a known problem with the Microsoft IIS framework: Server Error in '/MSP.Web' Application The following Microsoft article describes the problem and how to correct it: How to repair IIS mapping after you remove and reinstall IIS located at Installing MSP Server 3.1 The following steps will guide you through the installation of MSP Insure you have the latest version of MSP 3.1. Check to see if an updated version is available. If available, the new version can be downloaded and installed as a complete install (CD not required) and is preferable to the version that s on the CD you received. The downloaded version will be in the form of an EXE file that you can execute. 2. Start the install by inserting the CD or opening the downloaded EXE file. 3. The MSP 3.1 installer will automatically install any prerequisites that are required: a. SQL Server 2005 Express: A dialog asking you to install this component will be displayed if SQL Server is not installed on the computer. If you intend to use a version of SQL on another computer than the one you are installing MSP on, click Cancel to skip this step. Otherwise click Install. b. Microsoft.NET Framework: This is a necessary component for SQL Server and MSP. 4. If you did not install Microsoft IIS as described in the previous section, you will get an error at this time. Exit the installation, install IIS and restart the installation. 5. MSP installation begins. 6. If a previous version of MSP is installed, you will be prompted to uninstall it. In a later dialog, a check box will be presented to allow you to retain the data from the previous install or to start with a clean database. 7. You may select the folder where MSP files will be installed or accept the default. 8. You may select the type of installation. A Complete installation will install all components of MSP (MSP Server, documentation, AirBEAM Package Builder and AirBEAM packages for installing the MSP client on legacy devices (see MSP 3.1 User s Guide for more information on staging or provisioning legacy devices). If you want to select individual components for installation, select Custom. 9. MSP can be installed using a local copy of SQL Server Express 2005 (which may have been installed as part of this installation) or using an existing Local or Remote copy of SQL Server. The next step in the install process gives you this choice. 10. Once all choices have been made, the installation begins.

13 Installing MSP Confirming Successful Installation To confirm successful installation, do any of the following: Open Internet Explorer and go to This will start IIS and after a pause, the MSP login screen should be displayed. The default user name and password are admin admin. Start the IIS Manager from Administrative Tools. Verify that there is a Motorola application pool (can t do this from XP) and that the default web site is running. Start the Services manager from Administrative Tools and verify that there are 5 Motorola MSP services started. Installing Licenses in MSP Server Staging and Provisioning functionality will not be available until MSP is licensed for that function. The tabs for this functionality will not be shown if that functionality is not available. In order to license MSP for staging or provisioning, enter the license key under the Admin tab. Multiple license keys may be entered. For instance, there may be one for staging and one for provisioning or there can even be multiple keys per functionality such as provisioning. These keys are additive as well so two keys for 10 seats will provide the equivalent of one license key for 20 seats. Uninstalling MSP 3.1 The following steps will guide you through uninstalling MSP 3.1. From the Start Menu, Control Panel, choose Add or Remove Programs. Click on MSP and click the Change button. You will be presented with a dialog with Modify, Repair and Remove as options. Choose Remove and click on the Next button. The next dialog asks if you want to retain the MSP data. Make sure the box is checked if you want to retain the data.
